Harry Potter: Journey to Godhood

Chapter 405: Chapter 405: Casual Chat

In Garona's eyes, Alaric's completely defenseless trust towards friends was somewhat touching. The female half-orc forced a stern expression and accused.

"You're too careless! What if I truly have ill intentions towards you? I know you're a spellcaster.

Spellcasters may be physically weak, but they are significant figures and easily targeted by assassins like me."

What a typical tsundere.

"Is that a reminder from a friend?" Alaric deliberately misunderstood her words. "Don't worry; I won't just thank you casually."

Faced with Alaric's response, Garona had no choice but to put on a frustrated expression, but inside, she was quite pleased.

As their conversation continued, the rhythm gradually became normal.

"So, what's your purpose for being sent here?" Alaric asked.

"Reconnaissance, gathering intelligence," Garona replied. "Because I can speak your language, the chieftain sent me. The chieftain is the leader of all our clans."

"I know your entire tribe consists of many clans, each with its own chieftain," Alaric nodded.

"You... know us quite well?" Garona appeared somewhat surprised.

"Ah, yes, because I must help humans defeat you," Alaric said. "Knowing oneself and the enemy leads to victory in a hundred battles."

The last sentence was expressed in Orcish, conveying a similar meaning.

"That's quite insightful," Garona asked, "Is that a proverb of your people?"

"No, it's my own summary," Alaric replied.

"I always thought human speech was a bit... verbose," the half-orc hesitated before saying, "But you've changed my perspective."

"That's just because we always have things to say," Alaric said self-deprecatingly. "Some sociable people can answer both 'yes' and 'no' without expressing any meaning at all."

This statement clearly left Garona unable to accept it; she pondered for a long time but couldn't figure out how one could simultaneously answer both 'yes' and 'no' while expressing nothing.

Finally, she managed to come up with a response: "I think speaking like that is meaningless."

"But it has great meaning for humans," Alaric shook his head. "Humans are inherently contradictory; ten thousand people will have ten thousand ideas."

"Orcs are also contradictory," Garona remarked. "Initially, everyone wanted to cross the Dark Portal and conquer new lands, but upon arriving here, some clans didn't want to continue the war."

"What about you?" Alaric looked into Garona's eyes and asked, "Which clan do you belong to?"

Garona snorted, "I don't belong to any clan."

"Why?" Alaric inquired.

Instead of directly answering, Garona raised a hand in front of Alaric. "What do you see?"

"Your hand," Alaric replied.

"Is it human or orcish?"

"Orcish, but it looks somewhat like a human's."

This was evident. The green skin, sharp yellow nails, and slightly thicker knuckles were not unique to orcs, but compared to orcs, her skin seemed too smooth, nails too short, and bone structure too small.

"Yes, orcs would think this is a human hand—too frail, too useless. Lacking muscles, it can't lift an axe or smash someone's head. Too pale, too weak, and too unattractive."

Garona lowered her hand, her eyes cast down.

"You see my orcish side, while all orcs only see my human side. I possess both identities yet am simultaneously nothing. On either side, I'm regarded as an inferior being."

In reality, Garona had no human bloodline; her other half came from the Draenei, one of the races conquered by the orcs in Draenor.

In certain features, Draenei did indeed resemble humans.

However, even though Alaric already knew that Garona faced difficulties among the orcs, hearing her say it herself still brought a sense of desolation.

"That must make your life quite hard without the protection of a clan."

"There are also advantages," Garona said.

"I can move more freely among various clans. As an inferior being, everyone thinks I'm a forsaken child with no clan to pledge loyalty to, believing I won't side with anyone, so they let down their guard around me.

This has made me an excellent negotiator, but to survive, it's always better to find someone to rely on than to struggle alone."

Then, Alaric asked Garona many questions about the orc tribes, and she answered each one without hesitation.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door, and Baron's voice came from outside.

"My Lord, has your interrogation ended? May I have the honor of inviting you to our dinner?"

Clearly, since being captured, Garona hadn't eaten properly, as her stomach growled loudly upon hearing Baron's words.

She immediately pressed her hand against her stomach and turned her head, obviously a bit embarrassed.

"Ha, you must be starving," Alaric said nonchalantly, inviting her, "Come on, try some human delicacies with me; I'm sure you'll like it."

Facing Alaric's outstretched hand, Garona showed a flicker of interest; however, her concerns remained.

"Really... is that okay?" She glanced toward the door. "They... might not welcome me."

"Of course, it's fine; you're my friend," Alaric said cheerfully. "I do have some status among them, but you'd better stick close to me."

"Then... thank you." Garona finally took Alaric's hand, stood up, and added, "I promise I won't run away."

"No need to say that explicitly; I believe you," Alaric said, opening the door with a smile.

At that moment, he truly felt happy, for based on Garona's reaction, he could already ascertain that if things continued like this, the girl would likely leave the tribe and join his side.

Garona had no attachment to the tribe; there, she had no bonds, and the orcs didn't like her.

In this situation, she longed for trust, desired gentle treatment, and yearned for genuine support more than anyone.

Alaric's outstretched hand was like a lifeline to someone drowning; no matter the cost, she would grasp it desperately.
