Harry Potter: Don't Touch the Badger's Plants

Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Filius Frequency Charm, Experiment

In Professor Flitwick's office, when Ciel arrived, the diminutive Charms master stood up with barely contained excitement, eager to share his breakthrough.

"Ciel, earlier I only had time to tell you that your exclusive spell was completed. But you must not know how magical this spell truly is."

Professor Flitwick's eyes sparkled with the enthusiasm of a researcher who had made a significant discovery. "I referenced the concept of Muggle light spectrum mentioned in your spell concept notebook, and it really made the Lumos Charm produce wonderful reactions."

Speaking of this, Professor Flitwick immediately demonstrated for Ciel with the pride of a master craftsman.

"Based on the original Lumos Charm, both the incantation and casting gestures of this spell have changed. Come, watch carefully."

Professor Flitwick drew a circle with his wand. The original Lumos Charm casting gesture would end here, but the moment the circle was completed, his wrist suddenly flicked, and the wand tip immediately lifted upward.

"Lumos—Freques!"

With the slightly more complex incantation, an ice-blue Lumos Charm appeared at the tip of Professor Flitwick's wand. Like a child who had discovered a new toy, he danced with joy.

"Did you see that? There are even more variations. All of this is controlled by that flick of the wrist after drawing the circle, combined with magical power. You need to carefully feel that subtle sensation."

The Lumos Charm in Professor Flitwick's hand continued changing colors—from ice-blue to warm yellow, then to deep red, and finally to something extraordinary. Even though the Lumos Charm had clearly succeeded, no visible light could be seen at all.

"A Lumos Charm without light—this is so fascinating! Ciel, this is truly a genius concept."

Ciel looked at the constantly changing light at the tip of Professor Flitwick's wand, his face full of genuine admiration. Truly worthy of being a Charms master—he had actually transformed the Lumos Charm to this extent in just one week.

Under Professor Flitwick's patient guidance, Ciel practiced this variant of the Lumos Charm. Since this was developed based on the original Lumos Charm, with Ciel's near-Gold Tier mastery, he learned it remarkably quickly.

In just moments, different colored lights appeared at the tip of Ciel's wand. On his system panel, new text extended from the Lumos Charm entry:

[Lumos Charm Variant (Awaiting Name)]

On the silver background, a faint golden light appeared. The variant Lumos Charm shared the same level as Ciel's original Lumos Charm, which filled him with joy. He had thought he might need to level up this spell from scratch, but now it seemed he was saved considerable trouble.

Professor Flitwick then brought up the naming issue with characteristic generosity.

"Ciel, you have the naming rights for this exclusive spell. Come, child, give it a new name. Ciel Lumos Charm, or Sprout Lumos Charm—what do you think?"

While Professor Flitwick was enthusiastically suggesting names, Ciel showed a thoughtful expression.

"It should have a proper name, otherwise it's too troublesome to refer to. Since this spell gives the Lumos Charm a frequency-like concept, why not call it the Frequency Charm? As for the full name, I think it should be called—the Filius Frequency Charm."

Professor Filius Flitwick was stunned and waved his hands repeatedly in protest.

"How can this be? This is the exclusive spell I promised you, and the most crucial concept was provided by you. How can it be named after me?"

Ciel shook his head with firm conviction. "I only provided a concept similar to the light spectrum from Muggle science. Without your profound knowledge, Professor, the concept would always remain just a concept and never appear in reality. All the real work was done by you, Professor. If this isn't reflected in the spell's name, then I would be plagiarizing your academic achievement."

He paused, then added with finality, "Let's leave it at that—either call it the Filius Frequency Charm, or I suppose it will only be called a Lumos Charm variant in the future."

Hearing this principled stance, Professor Flitwick showed a helpless but touched expression.

"It's just a small spell, hardly an academic achievement. You child, it's not like I lack such achievements. Alright, final compromise—the Filius-Sprout Frequency Charm. It must be this way, otherwise I'll give up my attribution too."

Ciel's eyes flickered with satisfaction. Having the Sprout surname appear in the spell name was actually better than adding his personal name. Aunt would be very happy to know about this honor to their family legacy.

Bidding farewell to Professor Flitwick, Ciel walked toward the greenhouse with barely contained excitement. He couldn't wait to try the effect of the Frequency Charm on plant cultivation.

Arriving at the greenhouse, Ciel first tested the Lumos Shrooms with scientific methodology. He prepared several groups of test tubes under identical conditions, evenly distributing soil to the bottom and planting Lumos Shroom mycelium at the same growth stage.

After ensuring all other conditions were identical with only the Frequency Charm as the variable, the experiment began. The control group of Lumos Shrooms was illuminated with the original Lumos Charm. Another group was illuminated with Frequency Charms gradually shifting toward red light. The third group had Frequency Charms gradually shifting toward purple light.

This wasn't a particularly rigorous experiment, but Ciel believed it could still demonstrate the Frequency Charm's effect on Lumos Shroom growth.

However, soon Ciel's face fell with visible disappointment. Among all the test tubes, the Lumos Shrooms in the control group illuminated by the original Lumos Charm clearly had the most active mycelium state.

In the other two groups, regardless of whether the Frequency Charm color evolved toward red or purple, the Lumos Shroom mycelium state became increasingly worse. In the two most extreme test tubes, even the reward orbs had disappeared, meaning the mycelium had become completely inactive.

Ciel shook his head, reaching a clear conclusion. "The Frequency Charm doesn't promote Lumos Shroom growth. These mushrooms prefer the frequency of the original Lumos Charm. Deviating too far only hinders their growth rate and can even cause death."

The disappointment lasted only a few seconds before Ciel's expression returned to calm. He had only been verifying a hypothesis, and in academia, the possibility of hypothesis failure was often much higher than success—nothing to be disappointed about.

Moreover, he still had several magical herbs he hadn't tested. Perhaps there would be a breakthrough.

Ciel then took out Goldfish Vines for the same experimental protocol. This time, his eyes lit up slightly as they fell on a pot of Goldfish Vines illuminated by the blue-purple Frequency Charm.
