Harry Potter: Don't Touch the Badger's Plants

Chapter 46: Chapter 46: Gold Tier, Bottleneck

In Ciel's vision, countless orbs of light surged into his body like a luminous ocean.

The system panel immediately displayed line after line of information:

[Your cultivated Lumos Shrooms have reached maturity.]

[You have received a reward—Minor Night Vision Enhancement (Black Iron Tier).]

[You have received a reward—Minimal Lumos Charm Insight (Black Iron Tier).]

Such messages cascaded across the system panel like a waterfall, making Ciel's eyes feel sore just from watching. But he quickly realized something peculiar—with his legendary-level vitality, how could simply observing scrolling text cause eye strain?

"My eyes are undergoing changes," Ciel suddenly understood. "Night vision enhancement!"

He looked at the abilities section of his system panel. Sure enough, there was now an item called [Night Vision Ability], and the luster shimmering above it was transforming at an astonishing speed.

From Black Iron to Bronze, almost instantaneously. The bronze luster then transformed into silver radiance at an extremely rapid pace. Even after advancing to Silver Tier, the Night Vision ability's improvement speed only slowed slightly. The silver luster continued to spread and envelop until a brilliant golden light completely replaced it.

Only then did the Night Vision ability's transformation finally stop.

[Night Vision Ability (Gold Tier)]!

Ciel took a deep breath as the soreness in his eyes reached its peak, causing them to tear up continuously. His vision became completely blurred, but his face showed anticipation as he quietly waited for his eyes to adapt.

Finally, the soreness subsided and his vision cleared again. He immediately noticed the difference.

The greenhouse at night was quite different from during the day. Although the Lumos Shrooms provided basic illumination, most plants were better adapted to their natural growth conditions and didn't like light at night. So the greenhouse remained quite dim.

But now, in Ciel's view, the entire greenhouse was as bright as daylight. Without any illumination, he could move freely inside. He even had the feeling that in this nighttime environment, his vision was sharper than during the day!

This made him nod with deep satisfaction. If he encountered any emergency situations at night in the future, he wouldn't have to worry about vision problems. Darkness would become Ciel's domain.

Moreover, he had learned from Professor Sprout that unlike light-loving plants such as Lumos Shrooms and Goldfish Vines, some magical plants had strong photophobia. Once exposed to light during cultivation—even just the faint glow of a Lumos Charm—it would greatly affect their growth. When cultivating such plants, herbologists could only work in complete darkness or rely on certain potions. The process was extremely difficult.

But if Ciel encountered such plants in the future, operating in darkness would no longer be an obstacle.

The enhancement of his night vision ability pleased him greatly, but what he anticipated most was the other reward brought by the Lumos Shrooms: Lumos Charm insights!

Although the insights provided by a single mushroom were minimal, when the rewards from an entire experimental field were combined, the total was truly massive.

Ciel had just adapted from his eye transformation when he felt waves of fragmented insights about the Lumos Charm flooding into his mind. His mastery of the charm began to improve comprehensively under the influx of these fragments.

Every minute and second, Ciel felt new understanding emerging in his mind. On the system panel, his Lumos Charm, which had already shown a hint of silver luster, was being completely covered by silver radiance at a visible speed.

[Lumos Charm (Silver Tier)]!

Seeing this transformation, Ciel felt a surge of joy. The Lumos Charm, which he had learned more than two months after the Soil-Loosening Charm and Pruning Charm, had now advanced to Silver Tier at a much faster pace. This was the true reward of the cultivation system.

Then, anticipation appeared in his eyes. He could feel that only a small portion of the Lumos Charm insights brought by the mushrooms had been consumed. His mastery was still improving.

"Perhaps there's a chance to directly advance the Lumos Charm to Gold Tier!"

Ciel watched the system panel as the silver luster on the Lumos Charm became increasingly intense at an astonishing speed. One minute, two minutes... The insights brought by the mushrooms were being continuously consumed, and the silver luster became brilliant to the extreme.

Then, a faint golden light appeared within the silver radiance!

Ciel clenched his fists. "Almost there... It should succeed."

But moments later, even though the Lumos Charm insights were still being consumed, that point of golden light never expanded further. The charm remained stuck at the junction between Silver and Gold Tier, just like how the Soil-Loosening Charm and Pruning Charm had once been stuck at the threshold of Silver Tier advancement.

Ciel suddenly understood. "My magical perception isn't sufficient. If my Magical Perception Enhancement had reached Silver Tier, the Lumos Charm should have been able to directly advance to Gold Tier this time. Now it's stuck."

He sighed slightly in his heart, feeling a bit regretful. But soon, he recovered from this minor disappointment. He could harvest several pots of Goldfish Vines at regular intervals, plus train his magical perception in the abandoned warehouse. It wouldn't take too long to reach Silver-Tier Magical Perception Enhancement, so there was no rush.

As for now, a near-Gold Tier Lumos Charm should be more than sufficient to secure first place in the final test. After all, less than two weeks had passed since the last examination. Hermione's Lumos Charm had only been at Bronze Tier then—now she would be at most early Silver Tier. The gap between her and Ciel was considerable.

Then Ciel focused his attention on the upgraded Lumos Charm. "I wonder what changes it has compared to when it was Bronze Tier?"

He tried waving his wand. "Lumos!"

A wonderful sensation spread from within his body to the tip of his wand. Gentle, brilliant light immediately illuminated the space around him.

Ciel immediately felt the difference in this light from before. Where the radiance touched, it gave people hope and courage, as if darkness itself had to retreat before this luminescence.

He was somewhat surprised. "At this level, the Lumos Charm can already have some effect on weak dark magical creatures. In critical moments, when someone is panicked and confused, being enveloped by such light can bring considerable peace and composure."

A thought occurred to him. "If I use this level of Lumos Charm to illuminate magical plants, for powerful specimens like Guardian Trees that can resist dark magic, it should provide considerable benefits. If I use the charm to illuminate Guardian Tree seeds, it might give me a bit more success rate in that endeavor."

However, he quickly pulled his thoughts back. Guardian Trees were still somewhat distant for him. He would need at least Silver or even Gold-Tier Magical Perception Enhancement to truly have hope of cultivating them.

The most important thing now was still the Lumos Charm final test. That examination offered not only House points but also the opportunity for an improved charm. As long as he could obtain it, perhaps Ciel could further accelerate his cultivation speed for Goldfish Vines, Lumos Shrooms, and other plants!

Then Ciel checked the time and walked toward the Charms classroom, ready to face whatever challenges awaited.
