Chapter 20: Chapter 20
Apartment Showdown
As they arrived, Sarah and Samantha stood at the door to Sarah's apartment. Sarah glanced at Samantha, who was holding the key, and Samantha nodded for her to unlock it. The moment Sarah opened the door,
"Sarah!"
Derek, who was inside, immediately came rushing over. Samantha could tell Derek looked like he hadn't slept all night. His blonde hair was a mess, and he had dark circles under his eyes.
"Where were you last night? I was waiting for you and was worried," Derek blurted out, not even letting Sarah step inside first.
Sarah stayed silent, not answering. She avoided Derek's gaze and clenched her fists.
"Answer me, Sarah!" Derek yelled.
"Let me answer that."
Samantha pushed the door wide open, revealing herself. Derek, seeing Samantha standing behind Sarah, looked completely shocked and stumbled back. Then, Sarah and Samantha walked in. Sarah closed the door while Samantha looked around the apartment.
"Nice apartment you've got," Samantha murmured to Sarah.
"Why are you here?" Derek demanded.
Samantha ignored Derek. She walked over to the sofa, tossed her handbag onto it, and then casually sat down as if she owned the place. Sarah went to the kitchen to get a drink for Samantha, while Derek stood there, staring at Samantha, looking totally confused.
"I asked, why are you here?" Derek repeated, his voice starting to get louder.
"Just hanging out. What's your problem?" Samantha replied curtly.
"Please leave. I need to talk to Sarah alone," Derek insisted.
"Go ahead, talk," Samantha replied, still relaxed.
Sarah came out with two glasses, walking past Derek, but suddenly Derek grabbed her. "CRASH!" one of the glasses Sarah was holding fell and shattered on the floor. Sarah turned and stared dead into Derek eyes.
"I have no relationship with you anymore. Please get out of my apartment now. We're done, and there's nothing left to talk about," Sarah said coldly.
"See? You heard her. I told you to go home last night, not to come to Sarah's apartment," Samantha chimed in from the sofa.
Derek fell silent. He stared at Sarah, who was standing in front of him holding the one unbroken glass, as if Sarah had become a different person overnight. Suddenly, he turned to look at Samantha, his face red and visibly angry.
"Samantha, what did you do to make Sarah defy me, huh?" Derek fumed.
"Hmm, what did I do? You're the one who's been messing with Sarah. I just helped to stop it. Or is it that your grades are ruined because Sarah can't help you charm that professor anymore? So now you're panicking because if your grades are trashed, especially if you get kicked out of university, your dad won't acknowledge you to inherit his business. Isn't that what you're afraid of?" Samantha retorted.
"W-what? Please don't talk like Samuel!" Derek snapped.
"Oh, I sound like Samuel? Of course, I do. I'm his twin sister. Oh yeah, by the way, we just came from the police station to report what happened to Sarah. The police will arrest that professor and conduct a full investigation into the university. Hopefully, your name doesn't pop up," Samantha said casually.
"W-what? You called the police? But last night you said you wouldn't report it?" Derek asked.
"That's because you didn't listen to me. Like I just said, last night I told you to go home, not to Sarah's apartment," Samantha replied.
"You're totally out of line! You disappeared and just show up now, then meddle in my business. I have to take over Dad's business; I can't be ruined because of this and ruin the family name!" Derek yelled.
"You should've thought about that before you told Sarah to open her legs for that pervert professor. Every action has consequences. Now, just enjoy the consequences and pray the university doesn't expose your name for collaborating with that professor. If you get dragged into this, I want to know what Dad will say," Samantha said.
"Why did you, who should be dead, even show up, sis... if you weren't here... if only you never came back," Derek muttered.
"I came to replace Samuel, who Dad removed from his will and disowned by the family," Samantha replied.
"Did you also take care of Sarah's dad's mortgage? Like at the bank when you take care the damage fee for Samuel's death?" Derek asked.
"Hmm... yep, that's right. I'm a shareholder in Sarah's dad's company now," Samantha answered casually.
"W-what? What did you do? You're going against our family by working with a debtor to our company?" Derek asked.
"Huh? I'm not tied to the family business. Besides, Samuel's already been cut from the family business, right? So what's the problem? Go ahead and tell Dad and emphasize to him that I interfered because I don't care. Tell him to stop extorting and threatening innocent people like he did to Samuel's neighbor, and for you, stop using people whose fathers have business ties with Dad for your own gain," Samantha replied.
Derek was speechless. Samantha stood up and approached Sarah, then she nodded at Sarah and took her glass.
"You go tidy up first. I'll wait. After that, we'll go home," Samantha said.
"Okay, sis," Sarah replied.
"Sarah, you know I love you," Derek pleaded.
"If you loved me, you wouldn't have told me to service that pervert professor for your grades and your pride, then let me get trapped while you just stayed silent and enjoyed the benefits without caring about my feelings," Sarah replied coldly.
Sarah immediately turned and went into her room, starting to pack her belongings. Samantha stood leaning against the sofa, arms crossed, observing Derek, who looked deflated, confused, and defeated. A short while later, Sarah came out of her room carrying a duffel bag and a suitcase.
"Sarah, are you renting this apartment or do you own it?" Samantha asked.
"Renting, sis," Sarah replied, putting down her duffel bag.
"Just cancel the lease then. Contact the landlord. It's fine to lose the deposit for canceling," Samantha said.
"Okay, sis, I'll call them in a minute," Sarah replied, picking up her smartphone.
Samantha turned to look at Derek, who was still standing motionless, frozen in place.
"What else are you waiting for? Go home now!" Samantha yelled.
Derek flinched at Samantha's words. Without another word, he walked straight to the door and "SLAM!" he shut it, making the wall vibrate. After Sarah called her landlord, they walked to the door. Sarah looked back at her apartment, still full of furniture she'd bought herself with her allowance and part-time job earnings.
"You already got permission from the landlord to pick up your stuff tomorrow, right?" Samantha asked.
"Yeah, I did. I told him I'd be back in a day or two to get my things. It's just a bit sad because I've lived here for two years," Sarah replied.
"With Derek?" Samantha asked.
"No, Derek only moved in a year ago," Sarah answered.
"Hmm, I know, but oh well," Samantha mumbled to herself. "Still want to stay here? Derek's gone, we can go home later," Samantha said.
"It's okay, sis, no need. Let's just go home," Sarah replied with a sad smile.
"Alright, whatever you want," Samantha responded.
The two of them left the apartment and headed downstairs. As they were putting their things in the car, Samantha could see Derek still perched in his car, parked on the side of the road. Derek's face showed disbelief, watching Samantha drive a luxury car, and he seemed to be calculating and assessing his sister's capabilities, which were clearly different from Samuel, his older brother.
Samantha opened her car door, which swung upwards, and deliberately turned to look at Derek, giving him a mocking smile. Then, she and Sarah got into the car. Then drove off out of apartment complex leaving Derek behind.
