Chapter 13: Chapter 13 - The Freak Quick Attack
"Ennoshita, serve us a good one!"
In the second set, Karasuno served first. Ennoshita Chikara executed an overhand serve, which Matsukawa Issei received and passed to Yuuki.
Hanamaki Takahiro, Kikuzawa Yuma, and Kindaichi simultaneously jumped at the front row. With a quick glance at the net where Hinata Shouyou and Sawamura Daichi were preparing to block, Yuuki tensed his fingertips, adding slightly more force to his set. The volleyball arced high over the center of the net in a sharp parabola.
"That's too high!"
"Bad set?! Hinata, don't jump yet!"
Sawamura Daichi grabbed Hinata Shouyou's jersey, stopping his blocking jump.
"One, two, jump!"
He coordinated their timing through verbal cues, making sure their two-man block reached its peak just as the high set began descending.
With years of volleyball experience, Sawamura knew better than to jump too early for such high sets—delaying their jump meant their block hands would meet the ball precisely at its striking point!
As Kikuzawa Yuma reached his peak, Sawamura and Hinata launched upward. The ball approached Yuma's palm just as their blocking wall peaked.
But as Sawamura and Hinata stretched their arms to intercept the spike, they saw the silver-haired boy across the net flash an enigmatic smile.
What happened next defied logic—for one impossible moment, Kikuzawa Yuma seemed to freeze midair.
He reached his apex... and instead of immediately descending, hung suspended for a miraculous instant!
That split-second pause allowed the "misjudged" high set to drop perfectly into Yuma's striking zone—down to the millimeter!
Their pupils shook. Unable to halt their descent, they could only watch helplessly as their opponent casually spiked the ball over their heads.
Super cross-court spike!
Bam!
The ball landed inside the three-meter line—Kageyama Tobio's desperate dive couldn't save it.
"Beeep—"
Aoba Johsai 1 : Karasuno 0 (Second Set)
"Yuma! Hell of a spike!"
Teammates swarmed the landing Kikuzawa Yuma, celebrating wildly.
Even the battle-hardened Aoba Johsai players rarely witnessed such a spectacular super cross shot. In the entire prefecture, only Ushijima Wakatoshi surpassed Yuma's 338cm vertical reach.
"So cool!"
An orange-haired head popped up by the net.
"Your jump's insane! How'd you do that? Like—whoosh! Then—zap! Hanging in midair!"
Hinata Shouyou's starry eyes burned with curiosity.
Kikuzawa Yuma proudly raised his chin.
Damn right I'm awesome!
Ahem... just a little pride...
Facing the earnest inquiry from this human sunbeam, Yuma saw no reason to withhold techniques—after all, in a few years Hinata would jump even higher. His time to impress the rookie was now.
"Lean back slightly at takeoff, compact your posture midair, swing your non-hitting arm opposite... basically that. Most importantly, train your core muscles regularly—hang time improves with targeted practice."
"Ooooh! Got it! That's super amazing!"
Electric sparks practically crackled in Hinata's eyes.
Iwaizumi Hajime watched Yuma fraternizing with opponents, his fists inexplicably itching—like when dealing with a certain Oikawa-shaped nuisance: "Oi Yuma! No chitchat during matches! Yuuki! Drag your brother back!"
Yuuki obediently went to retrieve his sibling when suddenly—a primal chill crawled down his spine.
Turning, he found Karasuno's setter glaring darkly while muttering incantations across the net.
Kageyama Tobio: "That set was intentional right? Calculated the trajectory to perfection? How?..."
Yuuki shuddered, retreating hastily to the backcourt.
"Beeep—"
Players resumed positions as Matsukawa served. Ennoshita received, Kageyama prepared to set while Hinata darted right and Tanaka Ryuunosuke positioned left.
Kindaichi analyzed their formation, guessing Kageyama's target...
The ball left Kageyama's hands in a laser-straight trajectory—fast, precise, brutal—landing perfectly in Hinata's strike zone.
Bam!
Point to Karasuno.
"Beeep—"
Aoba Johsai 1 : Karasuno 1
Hinata & Kageyama: "Yeaaah!"
"Nice one!"
Kindaichi and Kikuzawa Yuma whipped around—something had just zipped between them?
Gasps erupted from the second-floor railing.
"Whoa! What was that?!"
"Insane speed!"
The Freak Quick Attack.
Though prepared, witnessing it live still stunned.
Kikuzawa Yuma wiped his brow, bending slightly with hands on knees.
Completely blocking this attack was near impossible, but a one-touch was achievable—just slow it enough for the backcourt to handle... right, Yuuki?
Yuuki's face remained neutral, but his eyes shone brightly.
Kikuzawa Yuuki: (Such an awesome spike... I wanna receive it!)
"That shrimp can do quick attacks?!" Kindaichi frowned. "Totally different from first set."
Kageyama noted Aoba Johsai's tension: Good. Scared now? Stay scared... keep focusing on Hinata!
Hinata served. Iwaizumi received. Yuuki swiftly approached the net, jumping with setting posture.
"Yuma!"
At Yuuki's shout, Kikuzawa Yuma exploded upward with unprecedented ferocity, his body stretching midair like a drawn bow.
"Incoming!"
Karasuno's front line—Kageyama, Tanaka, Daichi—formed a three-man block.
Yuuki faced his brother... and gently tipped the ball over.
Plop!
Service ace.
"?!!"
Kageyama Tobio glared daggers at the impassive Yuuki.
"Che! A dump?!"
This unexpected move shocked both teams—even Aoba Johsai hadn't anticipated it.
Kindaichi: "With that buildup, I thought Yuuki was setting to Yuma for sure."
"Tsk tsk... too naive." Kikuzawa Yuma shook his head. "When our socially anxious Yuuki suddenly yells? 100% a trick!"
Hanamaki served. Ennoshita passed to Kageyama, who set for Tanaka's spike—blocked by Kindaichi and Yuma.
Aoba Johsai served three more times before Tanaka and Hinata drew the block, allowing Sawamura to score.
Rotation shifted. Sawamura served—his consistent, low-risk style mirroring his personality.
Aoba Johsai's libero Watari Shinji received smoothly. Yuuki and Iwaizumi scored off the counter.
During rotation, Iwaizumi examined his right hand—the spike had felt unnaturally smooth. Yuuki's set had been flawless, the ball arriving at the perfect striking point. Not even Oikawa Tooru could've done better.
This year's Aoba Johsai rookies were exceptional—Kindaichi dominated with height, Kunimi Hideaki's lazy demeanor hid razor-sharp insight, and the Kikuzawa brothers?
Yuma's serves rivalled Oikawa's, while his aerial control and spike angles made him unstoppable. As for Yuuki—a complete all-rounder. A setter with supernatural setting and receiving skills.
