Chapter 67: Chapter 67: The Lifeform Known as Tartarus
In the beginning of time, darkness cloaked the depths in boundless shadow. No shape, no sense, only endless water.
Eros awoke in the stillness of that black void.
It felt as though he floated atop a sea of deathly silence, so quiet that not a sound remained, so dark that not a glimmer of light pierced through.
What... had happened at the end?
That damned Typhon had suddenly turned back, catching everyone off guard.
So, was this... the inside of Typhon's stomach?
Eros tried to lighten the mood for himself. In truth, the system had already informed him of where he was.
[Abyss of Tartarus]
You have reached the deepest layer of the world, the bottomless pit from which none return. This marks you as a witness.
Effect: Tartarus has laid eyes upon you and left its mark.
A black pattern coiled around Eros's ankle, keeping him afloat upon that watery surface, preventing him from sinking deeper into the abyss.
And that wasn't all. He'd earned several other achievements.
[Fist of the Seven Seas, Poseidon]
Through calculation or coincidence, you truly defeated Poseidon, god of the sea. This marks you as a warrior.
Effect: Your fame increases. You have acquired the complete set of whale-style martial arts from Sea Tiger.
Whale-style martial arts? Was this some kind of joke?
Wasn't that just normal punches, big punches, fast punches, and charged punches?
Why couldn't it have been shark-style? He wanted to learn Heavenly Warrior Kill Path, Insect Severing Way!
Ah, well. Whale-style wasn't so bad, at least now he could shout out flashy move names.
He'd been wanting a move he could yell during fights, staying silent while punching was driving him nuts.
[Typhon, I Killed Your Mom]
You faced the furious Father of Monsters, Typhon, and lived to tell the tale, even delivering heavy doses of personal and ancestral insults. This marks you as fearless.
Effect: Typhon now regards you as an eternal nemesis. Gaia's enmity and attention toward you have increased. You have obtained the innate domain [Beast King's Nest].
Ah... another god he couldn't afford to offend. But somehow, Eros didn't feel a thing.
As for this new ability, he knew a little about it. A domain storing 666 beast genes within his body.
He could summon and control these beasts, and supposedly, he now had 666 lives too.
But those 666 health bars? They were connected as one.
The power filled him with dread, as if he'd become nothing but a punching bag.
Well, better than nothing. Not like he'd earned some legendary feat like toppling Typhon, no surprise it wasn't all that useful.
[The Ocean Divided]
Because of your actions, the ocean now has two rulers. Amphitrite became Queen of the Sea, and Poseidon remains King, but they are no longer bound together. The ocean's sovereignty has been torn in two, plunging it into chaos beyond fate.
Effect: Sea gods now take greater notice of you.
Amphitrite had indeed become sea queen, but the outcome was far from what anyone expected.
Eros wasn't sure whether to call it success or failure.
And after learning that Zeus and the others were all goddesses, well, his motivation had waned considerably.
[Your bond with Amphitrite has reached friendship or higher. You may now use the Firebearer skill.]
[You have acquired the Potion Crafting skill from Amphitrite.]
That part puzzled Eros. He'd hit it off with Amphitrite ages ago, so why now?
Was it because she'd lacked a divine office, and so wasn't truly a "goddess" before?
After checking again, that seemed to be all the loot.
A huge haul, no doubt. But none of it seemed particularly helpful right now.
Especially nothing that could get him out of this mess.
Tartarus... Eros sighed.
So was he dead? And not just dead, dead and dumped into the deepest pit of the underworld, without even touching the River Styx along the way.
This was bad. Apollo and the others had stressed it over and over.
Going to the underworld was one thing, they could rescue someone from there without too much trouble.
But Tartarus? Only gods could survive here, relying on divine nature to keep from sinking.
And only powerful gods, by sheer will or the world's memory, could drag someone back from Tartarus's depths.
Ordinary mortals were erased long before reaching this place.
Eros, thanks to Tartarus's mark, wouldn't sink any further. He wouldn't be swallowed entirely.
But he had no way out either. To him, this was a prison without end.
He tried exploring, but here, there was no light, no direction, no edge.
The bottom of the world. Even flight was useless, the pull of Tartarus bound him tight.
Wait a sec. Didn't Hebe get swallowed with me? Where is she?
Wandering aimlessly, Eros finally remembered Hera, well, the one posing as Hebe.
He didn't plan to expose her. No point complicating things.
In the endless dark, he couldn't find any sign of her, until at last, a faint glow appeared in the distance.
In this void, even the tiniest light was like a giant quest arrow.
Eros headed toward it. When he drew close, he saw Hera, wrapped in a soft glow.
He let out a breath and waved.
"Good thing you're here too. I'd hate to be stuck down here alone."
But she stared at him like she'd seen a ghost, eyes wide with shock.
"You're... still alive?"
"Hey now, that's harsh. And aren't we both technically dead already?"
Eros noticed the difference, he wasn't glowing like she was.
That light must have been divine nature, protecting her from being consumed.
As for his mark, he had no intention of explaining it.
How could he even begin to explain why the slumbering Tartarus had marked him?
"Don't look so surprised. You should know by now I'm not that easy to kill."
Fair point.
Thinking about how absurdly stubborn Eros's life force was, Hera relaxed a little.
If he'd been devoured that easily, that would have been the real shock.
Still...
"Surviving might not be a good thing. You might end up wishing you'd just sunk and been done with it."
Whether it was pity or dark amusement, Hera's gaze held both as she said this.
"No one can get you out. For you, this is an eternal prison."
"Silence. Darkness. Nothing else."
NOTE:
Ah yes, the classic escape-the-underworld arc begins. And by the way, while this uses the small cosmos system, don't expect Saint Seiya power scaling to apply perfectly.
