GOT: A Transmigrator's Conquest

Chapter 7: 6. Decision

The month flew by for Stannon, each day feeling the same as he worked hard to make the most of his system. At first, he was full of excitement after copying the boar's abilities. But as the days passed, his progress slowed down.

Luck didn't seem to be on his side. He managed to copy only two abilities and two skills during the entire month—far, far less than he had hoped. Whether it was the system's fault or his own, Stannon wasn't sure, but the results were disappointing.

Now, standing in his room, fully dressed for the grand event celebrating his seventh name day, Stannon let out a long sigh. In the corner, his small wooden training dummy—worn and battered—seemed to mock his frustration.

The cold winter air flowed in through the stone walls, but Stannon barely noticed. His mind was elsewhere, focused on his lack of progress in copying. Over the past month, he had explored the castle grounds, testing his system on everything from animals Jory brought him to the people working under his father's rule. Most of the time, his efforts failed, and even when he succeeded, the results felt lackluster.

Stannon had managed to gain a few useful abilities and skills, though not as many as he had hoped. One of his most significant gains was Lightning Reflexes, copied from a very agile squirrel. The ability sharpened his reaction time, allowing him to dodge sudden attacks and react quickly to surprises. Stannon found it especially useful during knife training, where split-second decisions often made the difference between success and failure.

From a fox Jory had trapped, he copied a skill called Silent Steps, which helped him move quietly, almost without making a sound. While it wasn't as flashy as his other gains, it proved invaluable for sneaking around the castle and practicing stealth during his free time.

Along with these, Stannon also copied a skill called Swordsmanship Basics from one of the newbie who seemed to have just started training in swordsmanship. The skill gave Stannon the basic knowledge of sword fighting, such as proper stances, strikes, and parries. Well it was at least better than nothing.

He also deleted the useless skills of accounting and driving in order to make room for more skills.

Standing before the mirror, he opened his system panel in order to get a clear view of his progress over a month.

Although his luck in generating skills and abilities had hit all time low, he didn't slack in his training one bit. Over the month, he had trained hard and made progress, accumulating a considerable amount of exp.

Both his Knife Combat and Swordsmanship Basics skills had been upgraded to the next rank, earning him two stars in each. Reaching the second star had been easier and quicker than he had expected. His knife movements were now sharper and smoother, and his sword stances felt more natural, like they were part of him. But he quickly realized that going beyond this level would be much harder.

From what he could tell, it might take him more than two years of hard work to reach the third star for either skill. He couldn't help but wonder how long it would have taken without his system. That thought made him thankful for his unique gift but also frustrated about how slow his progress still felt.

'I wonder whether I would be beaten black and blue if I show my frustration in front of those newbies,' Stannon thought. 'How hard my life is! I can't even share my frustrations with anyone.'

He couldn't help but let out a sad and lonely sigh.

He then shook his his head to clear the depressing thoughts and looked at the glowing number on his system panel—230 experience points. It was a tempting amount. He could use it to upgrade the system, which would let him copy two-star abilities and bring multiple benefits with it. The thought of being able to copy abilities and skills of higher rank was exciting, but Stannon hadn't made that decision yet.

The reason was simple: upgrading the system wouldn't make him stronger right now. Over the past month, he hadn't been able to generate any useful abilities or skills beyond one star. The few two-star or three star abilities he had generated were completely useless.

Stannon also discovered something important about his system while training. He could still improve his abilities and skills without upgrading the system—he just had to work for it. This was a relief, but it also made things harder. Skills like Knife Combat and Swordsmanship Basics had shown steady improvement with practice, but his abilities, like Iron hide and Lightning Reflexes, were much tougher to train. Progress with abilities was painfully slow, and every bit of improvement felt like climbing a steep hill.

He couldn't help but think how long it would take him to upgrade his abilities to the next rank if he relied just on training.

Stannon stood in his room, staring at his reflection in the mirror. Tomorrow, he was leaving for the North—a place known for its freezing cold, wild animals, and stern people. The journey would be long and dangerous, but it wasn't the weather or the wolves that worried him the most. The real danger came from his own family. Stannon knew this trip was the perfect chance for Cersei to get rid of him. She could easily arrange an ambush, make it look like bandits or Targaryens were responsible, and no one would question it....well except for Robert.

He was one hundred percent sure that Robert would definitely avenge him one way or another. But what the f*ck was the point in that, if he was already dead.

The thought made Stannon clench his fists. He was only seven, and while his system gave him an advantage, it didn't make him overpowered in a short amount of time. If he wanted to survive, he had to be ready. He needed to be smarter, quicker, and more prepared than anyone who might try to harm him.

He took a deep breath and decided to spend 100 experience points on Iron Hide.

The moment he made the choice, a fiery sensation surged through him, stronger than that he had felt while copying this particular ability. It felt like his entire body was hardening, his skin toughening into something more than human. His breathing grew labored as the heat spread through every inch of him, making his muscles ache and his bones feel like they were being reinforced from the inside out.

After what felt like an eternity, the heat faded, leaving him drenched in sweat but alive with a newfound strength. The system's notification pulled his gaze back to the glowing panel.

Stannon read the new description, his heart racing. The improvement was substantial. Before, Iron Hide only made him a bit more durable, but now it was like wearing invisible armor. Blades and blunt weapons wouldn't hurt him as easily, and even the biting cold of the North would feel a bit less punishing.

He smiled for the first time in a while, a spark of confidence pushing away his earlier doubts. But he wasn't done yet. He still had 130 experience points left, and they needed to be used. He quickly spent another 100 points on Lightning Reflexes.

The heat came back, almost at the same intensity as earlier. It rushed through him like molten fire, making him drop to his knees. He was already tried from going through the earlier upgrade.

'Holy sh*t, I should have upgraded this one in the evening,' Stannon wanted to smack himself in the back of his head. In the greed and excitement of unlocking the new features of the lightning reflexes, he had quickly dumped the 100 exp in this ability without a second thought.

The upgrade carried on as Stannon sat properly on the floor.

His muscles twitched, and his senses became sharper than ever. Colors looked brighter, and movements around him seemed clearer. His heartbeat thundered in his chest, each beat loud and strong.

When the heat finally stopped, Stannon was exhausted but buzzing with energy. Another notification appeared on the system panel.

Lightning Reflexes ★★

Allows the host to see fast-moving objects more clearly and react much quicker.

In critical moments, it may provide a faint warning of impending danger.

EXP: (0/500)

Stannon's hands trembled as he closed the panel and slowly got back on his feet. The change was obvious. He could feel his body responding faster, his movements sharper, and his instincts more attuned.

Now, only 30 experience points remained, which he decided to put them into the Silent steps skill a little later. He didn't feel a single but regret on spending all those points as they definitely had made him stronger than before.

After wiping the sweat from his body and taking a moment to rest, Stannon straightened his tunic, brushed back his hair, and decided it was time to join the celebration for his seventh name day.
