Chapter 120: Volume 2 Chapter 63: Infection
The three Ghidorah's Wings that landed on the ground immediately ascended to the sky, cruising through the air at nearly Mach 8! Simultaneously, their bodies emitted boundless light, obliterating everything nearby. They were heading toward the top of the troposphere.
Nuclear missiles, just now recovering from the shockwave caused by the landing of Ghidorah's Wings, began saturation attacks on the three monsters flying high in the troposphere. However, the limited number of nuclear weapons that could be deployed at once within the atmosphere resulted in a precipitous drop in the number that could evade the Ghidorah's Wings' interception—ultimately falling to zero.
Worse yet, the sonic boom generated by the supersonic flight of the Ghidorah's Wings disrupted the trajectory of the nuclear missiles. Humanity had no choice but to rely on railguns, but even these proved ineffective against the creatures, whose speed made accurate targeting nearly impossible.
In Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, humanity found itself utterly incapable of intercepting these three monsters soaring above. At the same time, the Ghidorah's Wings showed no intent to harm human-built shelters—at least not deliberately.
The lasers they emitted scattered within the atmosphere, their power diminished. Only a colossal laser with tens of terawatts of power could penetrate the atmosphere effectively. However, the lasers emitted by the Ghidorah's Wings—while numerous—typically only reached the gigawatt scale, with the largest being tens of gigawatts at most. Such lasers couldn't extend far in the atmosphere, thus failing to cause significant damage to shelters they merely glanced at.
The three Ghidorah's Wings didn't stop, nor did they actively target human cities. Whether they failed to recognize them as such or for other reasons, the creatures, after landing, did not exhibit any behavior suggesting an intention to attack human settlements. They simply flew—indifferent, even when passing through cities. Their destruction was incidental, not intentional.
The three Ghidorah's Wings resembled miniature suns on Earth, flying at altitudes of several kilometers, their emitted lasers slicing through the ground, igniting forests, and severing buildings. As one of them passed through a city, the multitude of orange beams scorched the ground, slicing through skyscrapers.
Skyscrapers hundreds of meters tall were cut in half, their steel and concrete melting into slag. Amid the clattering of debris, the buildings collapsed from the top down. Entire city blocks were leveled in moments, and explosions erupted in the wake of the beams.
Abandoned cities burned. The shockwaves of the Ghidorah's Wings' flight reached the flames, scattering debris and fanning the fires. Though not as intense as the shockwaves produced by Godzilla's supersonic sprint, they were enough to topple weakened buildings, uproot burning structures, and obliterate those already compromised.
A radius of several kilometers, stretching across the city, was carved clean. A colossal scar split the metropolis in half. If humans hadn't evacuated, casualties would have already climbed into the millions, perhaps approaching tens of millions.
Yet, to humanity, equipped with advanced AI, as long as lives were preserved, all was well. Despite the destruction, this outcome was acceptable. Even if the Ghidorah's Wings continued flying for dozens of hours, as long as they refrained from attacking satellites, railguns, or shelters, their damage to human lives was minimal.
Curiously, these creatures—known to have destroyed Venusian civilization—were behaving so peacefully. This revelation astonished the global government.
The Ghidorah's Wings continued flying, as if performing a dance. Human weaponry—including railguns and nuclear missiles—persistently attacked, but due to their speed and the dense lasers around them, little damage was inflicted.
On the Earth's surface, with their full-power radiation, the Ghidorah's Wings were nearly invincible except against Godzilla. But how long could this invincibility last?
Two hours? Three? At most, four.
Their full-scale radiation caused massive waste heat, which would accumulate within their bodies, gradually overheating and melting them from the inside out. According to satellite spectral analysis, the surface temperatures of the Ghidorah's Wings had already reached alarming levels within the first hour and continued to rise. At this rate, they would self-destruct in two to three hours.
Knowing this, humanity, while bewildered, accepted the inevitability of their demise. This was good news.
After an hour of local flight, the Ghidorah's Wings began moving in different directions. The one in South Africa flew north to North Africa. The one in the Middle East headed east to East Asia, followed by the one from Northern Europe.
These creatures, burning themselves out while flying, were allowed to proceed without intervention. Humanity saw no need to burden the already fragile environment with further nuclear strikes.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, as humanity's decision was made, Godzilla raised its head.
It could feel it. Soon, the ecosystem of this planet would grow even more complex.
