Chapter 729: Who Is Concubine Wen Ji [1]
Who was Concubine Wen Ji?
That was the only question that kept appearing in the emperor's mind as he blankly stared at the names on the list in his hands.
There were a total of seventeen names on the list. Some of them were his sons and daughters, while the others were his wives.
After a moment of thinking, he pushed the thoughts of his beloved concubine back in his head and turned his attention back to the page once more.
The name on the top belonged to none other than his firstborn, the crown prince.
Emperor Quan was not surprised to see this name; instead, he found it logical: "They are indeed playing a long game." He said with solemnity. "Instead of directly controlling me and taking a chance, they are targeting the next emperor."
Saying this, he let out a heavy sigh, burdened with emotions, "Which also means they either have plans to get me out of the way. But doing so this soon would only draw suspicion towards the prince."
Noah sat quietly before him, listening to his conjecture while nodding inwardly. The man was clearly an experienced employee who had what it took to be someone in his position.
He not only called Noah a liar for making such a big list in the name of targeting his family, but he also picked up on important pieces of clues just from a list Noah had carefully pieced together for him to read.
"Can you tell me how you can find out who has been infected by this curse?" Placing the sheet back on the table, the emperor looked at Noah inquisitively, "Please don't think that—"
Before he could finish his words, Noah interjected in the middle, "Ah, no need to clarify; I understand that you will have doubts and will be curious about my methods."
Seeing his clear understanding smile, the old emperor chuckled wryly and leaned back in the chair, allowing him to continue further.
"To be honest, it is no big secret." Noah started explaining the basic method he knows to find out about the curse. "As I have revealed before, it is the soul that the curse targets, and once you enter their soul realm, you can see their curse latched on to the curse."
Noah's words immediately made the emperor frown.
Soul Realm was special to every person; it was not only the place where their soul resided, but it was also a place where all of the memories and the deepest parts of the person that make the person 'them' were stored.
To enter this place without someone's consent was not only frowned upon, but it was also a crime in some places. The Quan Empire was one such place.
Noah saw the changes in his facial expression and understood what was going on. "I did not enter their soul realms while meeting with each one of them. Even though you cannot sense the curse on each person normally unless you have a powerful soul, I have come up with a way that can help us detect the signals of the curse when you are nearby an infected person."
The emperor finally eased his brows and nodded in understanding. "No wonder the emperor sent you here as an envoy; who better to tell us about this thing than the person who built it himself? And taking your powers into consideration, he did not even have to worry about your safety."
Noah merely offered a smile in return to his words, without admitting to anything, but the man took it as a confession.
"Now that we know who these… infected people are, is there a way to heal them, or do we have to…" With a pause, he looked Noah in the eye and continued with indifference, "Take them out of the equation?"
Noah did not answer immediately. Instead, he looked down at the parchment lying on the table between them—its edges slightly curled, names marked in ink still fresh.
He tapped his finger once, then lifted his gaze to meet the Emperor's eyes.
"They can be saved," he said calmly, "at least most of them."
The Emperor's fingers stopped drumming against the armrest.
"As long as the curse hasn't taken deep root into the soul," Noah continued, "there is still a chance to sever its grip. It won't be easy… but it is possible."
The old man's brows furrowed, and he leaned forward slightly. "What do you mean by 'deep root'?" Is there a way to tell how far it's gone?"
"Yes." Noah nodded. "When the curse first takes hold, it clings to the outer shell of the soul, feeding slowly on the person's emotions, choices, and sense of self. That's the early stage—it clouds their judgment, makes them more susceptible to manipulation, but their core remains intact."
"And after that?" the Emperor asked, voice low.
"If left undisturbed… the curse seeps deeper. It embeds itself into the core of the soul and begins rewriting it from within. That's when the person stops being who they were. Their memories may remain, but their values, their emotions… even their instincts can shift."
The Emperor's jaw tightened. "Like puppets."
"Exactly," Noah confirmed. "But fortunately for you, Your Majesty, those on this list have not reached that point. I made sure of it."
A long breath escaped from the emperor's chest. His shoulders dropped ever so slightly, the weight of his position visibly taking its toll. "Then what is this method of yours? How do we free them?"
Noah went on to take out a prism-shaped artifact and placed it before the emperor. "This thing is the solution to all of your problems."
The Emperor Looked at the device with intrigue and doubt. "Forgive me for being blunt, but I still have many doubts about this whole thing." The Emperor looked Noah in the eye and did not mince his words: "Even if you do save all of these people, you will not always be here to help us, and they could be controlled again."
Now that he knew that it was an item that could save the people and not Noah himself, he did the only thing he could: he started finding ways to get his hands on the object.
