Chapter 722: A Letter Arrives
Time passed slowly, like steam rising from the hotpots below. The scent of roasted duck and spirit herbs lingered in the air as the kitchen fires crackled downstairs, the chef humming an off-key tune, unaware of the storm that had just passed in the room above.
The city outside continued to run without stopping for anyone—bustling streets, distant laughter, bells ringing from a passing merchant cart. And then, a shadow whistled through the bright sky.
A sleek, dark-feathered bird, no larger than a grown man's arm, shot through the air from the direction of the royal palace. The bird had its wings spread wide and its eyes closed, basking in the freedom with something akin to pride flashing through its face.
The bird twisted and turned through the gaps between the wires of the bridge. Its crimson beak glinted in the sunlight as it somersaulted through the city and barged through opened doors, violating the privacies of the people with no shame.
While moving through their houses, it replied to their screams with mocking chirps as if to say, 'If you want privacy, keep your doors shut and your bodies covered.'
Suddenly the bird halted, catching a faint scent of delicious food. It dove down upon seeing the backside of a building and perched up on the tree opposite to it. From the open window on the wall, it could see clouds of fire coming out of the mouths of humans who seemed to be cooking something tasty.
Slurp!
Licking its imaginary lips, the bird flapped its wings once more, taking off. Rising through the sky, it allowed its body to fall before straightening its wings and diving straight towards the open entrance.
Woosh!
The cooks who were focused on tossing the food in the air did not even realize when a shadow came and snatched the cooked food from the wok, still in the air, and disappeared.
It was only when the wok fell down that they noticed the fried rice inside of it was gone.
"What?!"
"What's going on?!"
"Where is the food?" More than one chef was shocked to see the food disappear. The theft of their hard work made them all enraged. The fact that someone could steal under the nose of the foundation establishment chefs sent alarms through the crowd watching from the outside as well.
Then another person spoke with a trembling voice that made all the voices die down.
"I think I saw a blur…"
The whole kitchen paused, and a look of resignation appeared on their faces. Without speaking anything else, everyone returned back to their work as if this was an everyday occurrence.
Some of the guests who were not regulars in this place were surprised and baffled to see the development and started asking about the inside story. While they were trying to solve the mystery of the disappearance of the food, the culprit had long escaped outside.
But it did not immediately run away; instead, it circled the building once more before it flew down and perched upon a wooden shelf in front of a closed window.
Tap. Tap.
A sharp knock against the wooden folds with its beak.
Inside, there was silence for a moment.
Then the window creaked open. The bird flapped in, graceful and efficient, circling the room once before settling on the wooden table placed in the middle of the two cozy, warm seats, its red eyes scanning the occupants.
What it saw made it pause.
Noah lay on the couch near the window, his shirt slightly unbuttoned, hair tousled like he'd just woken from a stormy nap.
Then there were faint bite marks on his collarbone, which his loose gray robes failed to hide. With a cough, Noah straightened his robes expressionlessly, like nothing ever happened.
Noah's breathing was steady, but when he looked at the woman half-sitting to his right, a wild glint flashed through his eyes. Beside him, Xin Yan was smoothing out the creases in her robes, her face flushed a soft rose. Her snowy hair had clearly been hastily tied back. Her lips looked just a bit too red.
She refused to meet his eyes.
And Elysia—
Nowhere to be seen.
Well, at least the bird had never seen her in its life and probably never will.
But Noah could see her, and his gaze moved towards her, and he saw her.
Oh, he definitely saw her…
There she was, lying to his left on the bed in a seductive pose. With a dreamy look in her eyes, she was staring at the ceilings and unconsciously licked her lips, savoring the leftover taste of something.
She seemed to have noticed Noah's gaze and opened her mouth a little as if to show him something, but then she closed it and gulped down while shooting him a playful wink.
Noah felt his throat going dry.
He gulped down a mouthful of saliva before turning his attention towards the bird perched up on the table and noticed it looking back with a deadpan look in its eyes.
Noah coughed into his hand and stepped forward; with a small wave of his fingers, the scroll tied to the bird's leg floated free and hovered before him.
The seal on the envelope was a dark blue wax embossed with the symbol of the Temple of Eternal Body—encircled by golden calligraphy denoting the Emperor's personal court.
Xin Yan, now composed, leaned in to glance at the message with him. Her warm breath brushed against his shoulder, but she said nothing—her expression returning to its usual calm.
Noah broke the seal and unfolded the parchment.
His eyes narrowed as he read the contents.
Elysia pushed herself up and crawled behind Noah before looking down at the letter, her hands wrapped around his neck and her bountiful breasts resting on his head, spilling toward the sides. Had it not been for her robes holding them in place, they would have slipped on each side, cupping Noah's face.
She glanced at the letter once and read through the contents easily. "Looks like they are ready to talk."
