Get Stronger by Pleasing Pokémon? Who Needs to Be a Trainer!

Chapter 22: Chapter 22: If You’ve Got Questions, Go Visit Neighbor’s Breeding House

Atop his Aegislash, commentator Li Bing finally let out a long sigh of relief.

This job was scorching hot like holding cash straight out of a furnace.

He genuinely had no clue how to keep commentating anymore.

All he could do was harp on about how amazing Lapras was.

What else could he praise? The Trainer eating chips in the middle of the battlefield?

Yeah, right...

If he weren't so strapped for cash, Li Bing would've quit this gig days ago.

"Man, not many promising new Trainers in this round either…"

Hovering between the nine fields, he circled lazily, waiting for the fourth wave of matches to start.

"Hmm? Over on Field 8 a Squirtle and a Bulbasaur?"

He drifted over for a closer look.

"Let's turn our attention to Field 8. What a rare sight! Both Trainers have starter Pokémon. It's a face-off between Squirtle and Bulbasaur!"

Down below, Michael Zhang's expression froze as soon as he saw the Squirtle being released.

There was something different about it… but he couldn't put his finger on what.

His face darkened as he thought back to the scolding he'd received earlier from a referee.

And it was all that guy's fault.

The one Qin Shu called "Brother Feng."

If that guy hadn't shown up, would Qin Shu have rejected him?

Michael's tone turned cold. "I already told you your Squirtle doesn't stand a chance against my Bulbasaur!"

"Hmph."

Qin Shu didn't even bother responding. Her delicate face lit up with a hint of satisfaction, the corners of her mouth curling upward in a smug little smile.

Sure enough, Brother Feng had been right all along.

People like this were best ignored.

As for whether she could win…

The moment the referee called the match to begin, she gave her command with crisp confidence. "Squirtle, show him what our special training's accomplished. Water Gun!"

Michael scoffed. "With your Squirtle's Water Gun? No way that'll "

"Wait, what?!"

His words hadn't even finished leaving his mouth before a sharp, piercing blast of water slammed into Bulbasaur.

The speed, the precision it left Bulbasaur crying out in pain.

"Bulba! Bulba?!"

Its eyes widened in shock, staring at Squirtle with disbelief.

Just a few days ago, that same Water Gun attack barely tickled.

How could it suddenly hurt so much?

"Nice one! Squirtle, hit it again!" Qin Shu cried excitedly.

"Dodge it! Quick!" Michael barked, panic setting in.

But it was too late.

Bulbasaur had already taken a direct hit and had no chance of avoiding another. Especially not a Water Gun trained to pinpoint accuracy after countless battles with Snivy.

From above, Li Bing had been watching the whole thing unfold.

He couldn't help but nod in approval.

"Hmm, not bad. That Squirtle's got excellent control over Water Gun."

But something puzzled him.

"Still… it doesn't feel like that level of performance came from this girl's training…"

Her surprised expression made it look like even she hadn't expected Squirtle to be that good.

He shook his head and turned his Aegislash to fly toward Group 9. Time to check on the others.

...

"Damn it! Sandshrew, combo move!"

The buzz-cut boy's expression was full of disbelief as he stared at Lin Feng's Snivy.

So far in this match, he'd already used three different moves.

Rollout, Poison Sting, Fury Cutter.

But not one had landed.

Rollout and Poison Sting were effortlessly dodged.

Fury Cutter had been deflected by a single Razor Leaf.

It didn't feel like Snivy was even fighting Sandshrew it was more like it was using him for target practice.

"You ready?" Lin Feng asked, sensing something click within Snivy through the resonance of his Evergreen Power.

"Snivy."

Snivy gave a short nod.

"Then let's wrap it up. Use Vine Whip."

Even as Sandshrew hurled itself into the air, using the momentum from Rollout to leap high with claws glowing an icy white...

Two vibrant green vines lashed out like spinning tops, slamming Sandshrew to the ground with brutal force.

The impact flung it over ten meters away.

That was the power of Snivy's Vine Whip.

Its speed stat had already been maxed out.

And thanks to all that "weeding" practice, its Vine Whip had reached a level of precision and fluidity that was second nature.

The buzz-cut boy had been grinning earlier, thinking Snivy wasn't even bothering to dodge.

Now, his eyes were wide in disbelief.

His precious combo move had been swatted away like a fly.

"That's impossible! How?!"

Sandshrew, still lying on the ground, struggled to get up.

He couldn't believe it.

He knew Sandshrew's offensive capabilities weren't its strong suit, but its defense and stamina had always been top-tier.

And yet…

"How the hell is your Snivy this strong?" he asked, stunned.

Lin Feng paused for a beat, then said casually, "If you're curious, go to Wutong Town and check out a place called Neighbor's Breeding House. All the secrets behind Snivy's strength are in there."

"Snivy?"

Snivy tilted its head, amber eyes glancing up at Lin Feng in confusion.

What did this have to do with the breeding house?

"Just helping with the advertising," Lin Feng whispered via Evergreen Power.

"Snivy…"

Clearly, Snivy still had no idea it had just become a walking commercial.

"Got it! Thanks for the tip!"

The buzz-cut boy nodded seriously, then picked up Sandshrew and left the battlefield.

He felt he had gained a lot from this battle.

Especially seeing Lin Feng's calm expression both before and after the fight.

It gave him clarity.

A Trainer should be as steady as a mountain, unfazed by either victory or defeat.

...

"That Snivy…"

Li Bing watched Lin Feng thoughtfully, a rare seriousness in his expression.

As a Gym-level Trainer himself, his eyes saw far more than the average spectator.

That Vine Whip from earlier the sheer force behind it wasn't something an ordinary Grass-type Pokémon could unleash.

And judging by the way Snivy and its Trainer had fought...

They had complete trust in each other.

"Tsk, tsk…"

Li Bing couldn't help glancing toward Field 1, where the Lapras Trainer sat.

A thought surfaced in his mind.

With all this build-up, that guy better not get shown up in the end…

A strange urge began to stir within him.

Aside from the supermarket boss and himself, no one knew the truth behind this tournament.

There had been some… behind-the-scenes arrangements.

Specifically, the match-ups in the later stages were within his control.

Which meant…

He could make sure Lin Feng faced off directly against the Lapras Trainer.

Now that would be worth watching.
