Chapter 62: Chapter 62 Successful Escape
As Gavin landed, he swiftly drew his dragon bone bow and fired at the monstrous creature. However, the beast appeared to possess formidable magic resistance. Although several fire arrows struck true, their explosions did little more than stagger it momentarily. The flames failed to inflict any significant damage.
"Syndor, take off!" Gavin commanded as the monster swooped down toward them. He released another fire arrow, the impact veering the creature off course. Syndor sprang skyward, narrowly avoiding the monster's attack. The beast crashed to the ground, where a squad of Blood Dragon Guards was already rushing to engage.
One guard leaped from his horse and plunged his sharp sword into the creature's flesh. The monster's anguished scream pierced the air as it retaliated, snapping the guard in half with its powerful jaws. Despite his grievous injuries, the guard clung fiercely to his weapon, tearing the wound wider. From the gash oozed not blood, but thick white ichor.
The creature lashed out again, but another Blood Dragon Guard took the opportunity to climb onto its back. With a swift stroke, he slashed one of its wings. The beast recoiled in pain, thrashing violently as more guards swarmed it. Their combined attacks aimed to cripple its mobility, cutting chunks from its legs and hacking at its wing joints.
Syndor dived suddenly, seizing the monster's neck in his powerful jaws. The beast roared and writhed, its resistance weakening as the Blood Dragon Guards relentlessly struck at its vulnerable points. Gavin saw his chance. Leaping from Syndor's back, he drove his flaming sword deep into the monster's skull. Its movements ceased, and an eerie silence followed.
Gavin exhaled heavily, his body trembling from the effort. The battlefield reeked of burnt flesh and ichor. As he surveyed the fallen beast, distant roars echoed through the forest. He turned, alarmed, just as two more monsters charged from the shadows.
"Hold your ground!" Gavin shouted to the guards. He signaled Syndor to take flight, fearing for the dragon's safety. As they rose into the air, Gavin's heart sank. A horde of monsters was converging on their position.
"Retreat to the coastline!" he bellowed to the remaining Blood Dragon Guards. "Cover the rear! Protect the cargo!"
The guards fought valiantly, forming a protective ring around the precious dragon bones and Valyrian steel. But one by one, they fell, either dragged from their mounts or crushed beneath monstrous claws. From above, Gavin directed Syndor to dive and distract the creatures, buying precious seconds for his men.
At last, the coastline and the ship Belleris came into view. Gavin urged Syndor to land on the deck. Jumping from the dragon's back, he shouted, "Set sail! Now!"
On the shore, the remaining guards scrambled aboard waiting rowboats, their horses abandoned in the chaos. Eight guards made it to the Belleris just as the ship pulled away, its sails catching the wind. Gavin watched as the coastline receded, relieved yet haunted by the losses.
The Belleris surged forward, navigating the familiar route with haste. In the hold, Gavin carefully placed the dragon egg in a secure chamber. He spent the rest of the journey beside Syndor, soothing the restless dragon as it adjusted to the corrosive energy that lingered after leaving its cave. The eight surviving guards stood watchful, forming a protective circle around the deck.
Night fell, and the ship glided through the ink-black waters of the Smoke Sea. Moonlight cast a silver sheen over the deck as Gavin leaned against Syndor's warm flank, his eyes heavy with exhaustion. The tranquil moment shattered when a sudden splash disturbed the surface of the water.
Syndor's head snapped up, nostrils flaring as a low growl rumbled from his throat. Gavin barely had time to react before a massive shadow leaped from the water, landing heavily on the deck. The creature was grotesque, its fangs gleaming in the moonlight.
Syndor acted instantly. A torrent of dragonfire erupted from his maw, engulfing the beast in an inferno. The monster disintegrated into ash within moments, but the flames spread to the deck. Crew members scrambled, shouting in panic as they tried to extinguish the fire.
Syndor lowered his head, nudging Gavin with a soft, remorseful whine. "It's all right, my friend," Gavin said, resting a hand on the dragon's neck. Summoning his magic, he willed the flames to dissipate. The fire shrank and vanished, leaving only charred wood and shaken crewmen in its wake.
Two days later, the Belleris reunited with its fleet near the Sunset Sea. The vibrant hues of the setting sun painted the sky and waves in shades of orange and gold. Gavin stood at the railing, deep in thought. He couldn't help but wonder how the world would react to Syndor's return.
A sudden splash broke his reverie. Syndor emerged from the water, wings spread wide, scattering droplets like jewels in the evening light. In his jaws, he held a massive fish. Gavin chuckled.
"Well done," he said, watching as Syndor roasted the fish with a precise burst of flame. The dragon devoured his meal with satisfaction, his scales glinting in the sunlight.
Gavin smiled, envisioning Syndor's future. "You'll be magnificent," he murmured, a spark of hope lighting his weary eyes.
