Frozen: The Child of Magic

Chapter 9: The Beast of the Trolls’ Sacred Pact

"As long as Sosi has decided to tame it, there's no stopping him."

Harl spoke through a yawn as he rubbed his eyes.

Caron, on the other hand, smiled as he watched Sosi inch closer to the beast.

"I'm curious to see what happens next."

* * *

Unlike the calm between the two friends, panic and chaos had overtaken the crowd.

"What a disaster! That child is absolutely insane!"

One citizen shouted in horror.

"Impossible! What happened earlier was just luck… and now he's risking his life again?!"

A guard cried out, disbelief etched across his face as he stared at the small troll approaching the savage wolf.

The guard originally sent to rescue Sosi had vanished, retreating to the rear ranks and muttering to himself:

'My life matters more. I'm not about to die for a reckless kid!'

Meanwhile, Sosi ignored the terrified gazes surrounding him and kept moving forward. The wolf still lay on the ground, shaken by the earlier blow—but it sensed Sosi drawing near. It tensed, preparing to defend itself despite the pain.

But then something strange happened…

The closer Sosi came, the calmer the wolf grew. Gradually, its body relaxed, its breath steadied, and a deep stillness overtook it—until it lay back down, eyes fixed on Sosi with a look that bordered on reverence… as though it were staring at something sacred.

Sosi raised a finger, stepping right up to the beast, and gently touched its forehead. He whispered:

"Let us forge a pact, my new companion…"

He felt a tremor run through the creature. It was afraid—and fear made the pact easier. Sosi smiled with confidence, and moments later, a golden light enveloped them both, wrapping their bodies in a radiant aura that left everyone stunned.

Silence reigned.

"Is… is this kid mocking us again?!"

One townsman grumbled in disbelief—but no one answered. Everyone felt too humiliated to admit they were starting to believe.

"What is that little brat up to?!"

Another guard muttered through clenched teeth, especially the one who had failed to act earlier. Jealousy burned in his chest. The child had done what he could not.

Across the square, Caron and Harl had grown serious. They knew this wasn't just a spectacle—it was one of the rare rites of passage that marked a true troll's growth.

Harl swallowed nervously.

"Caron… do you think he'll succeed?"

Caron replied calmly:

"He will. I saw the wolf earlier… there's no more fight left in it. It's time for the pact."

But inside, he was tense, recalling the tale their elder, Grand Pabbie, had once told them…

A Flicker of Memory--

"My children, now that you've grown, it's time I share an important secret."

Grand Pabbie had spoken while the young trolls sat in a circle around him.

"A secret?"

"Oh no! You've been hiding things from us? That's not fair!"

Grand Pabbie chuckled kindly before saying:

"I never told you before because you were too young. But now, you're ready."

He clapped his hands, his voice suddenly solemn:

"Listen carefully! We trolls are born with two natural gifts. The first is called Stoneform—our ultimate defense. The second… is the Beast Pact."

"Stoneform? I know that one!"

Sosi leapt up proudly, then curled into a stone sphere right before their eyes—just as Grand Pabbie had described.

Grand Labbie laughed.

"Yes, that one comes naturally. We've trained you in it since you were little, to keep you safe."

Caron asked, curiosity shining in his eyes:

"But what about the Beast Pact, Grandpa?"

"Ah, don't rush me!"

He winked before continuing:

"The Beast Pact is a sacred bond between a troll and a creature of this world. Each troll may form up to three in their lifetime. But… don't think it's simple. During the pact, you'll face a trial—an internal test, where your opponent is the beast itself. If you earn its respect… the pact is sealed. But if you fail… you may be injured—or worse."

He paused, voice heavy with meaning:

"The creature's strength becomes your own. If it dies, its essence passes to you, forming a crystal that remains by your side forever."

He then looked down at his chest—where three glowing crystals rested—and smiled wistfully, his eyes clouded with old memories.

Back to the Present--

"What's happening…? What is that glowing light?!"

One of the townsfolk whispered, while murmurs of impatience began to ripple through the crowd.

"Yeah… what are we even waiting for?"

Voices rose in confusion, until a guard stepped forward, advancing cautiously toward the glowing sphere.

Caron and Harl stayed rooted in place. They knew this moment was protected—no one could break through it.

Then suddenly—

BOOM!

The light burst outward in a radiant shockwave!

The guard who'd approached was flung backwards like a ragdoll, landing hard and rolling unconscious.

And as fate would have it… it was the same guard who had been sent to rescue Sosi earlier.

Now, for the second time, he lay flat on the ground.

Right before losing consciousness, he screamed silently:

'I HATE troublesome kids!!'

The glow began to fade.

And what lay within it became clear at last.

"By the stars… he did it!"

One villager gasped, eyes wide with awe.

Smiles broke across Caron and Harl's faces—they could finally breathe again.
