Chapter 8: Alone Time
Faced with Emmy's request, Liam naturally had no reason to refuse.
The two naturally formed the first group.
Among the remaining four, Rolly and Maive refused to group with Jack and Danny.
Thus, after Emmy invited Liam, the seven-person grouping was effectively finalized.
Group 1: "Detective" Liam, "Veterinarian" Emmy.
Group 2: "Hooligan" Jack, "Thief" Danny.
Group 3: "Otaku" Rolly, "Teacher" Maive.
Group Four is the "Soldier" Drake operating alone.
After the four groups were divided, the members claimed their tasks on the schedule in order.
After confirming their assigned tasks, all four groups quickly left the conference room.
After all, there wasn't much time left for them to complete their respective first tasks.
Liam and Emmy also hurriedly began searching for the "Engineering Room" mentioned in the first task.
After exiting the conference room, the corridor outside had similarly extravagant decor - iron candleholders carved with wolf-head motifs, and deep red heavy carpets inlaid with golden threads.
Through the somewhat damaged windows along the corridor, one could see that the exterior walls were constructed of stacked stones, resembling the style of an ancient castle.
The conference room was located at the end of the first floor of this castle. After leaving the conference room and proceeding along the corridor, they soon saw a spiral staircase.
Liam and Emmy quickly ascended it and arrived at the second-floor corridor.
Right beside the staircase, Liam saw a wooden door bearing a metal nameplate.
"It's the Engineering Room."
Liam read aloud the text on the nameplate.
Behind that wooden door, sharp alarm sounds blared incessantly—this was the source of the alarms they had heard downstairs.
"We found it so quickly... That means we still have plenty of time left."
Emmy let out a sigh of relief, then stepped forward to grip the door handle and gently turned it.
The door wasn't locked, and the two entered the engineering room easely.
Inside the spacious room, an old-fashioned generator hummed slowly, fitted with numerous halogen tubes.
One of the tubes had turned red and emitted loud "beeping" alarm tones.
The generator was also connected to other equipment, all operating normally and seemingly requiring no repairs.
Liam and Emmy approached the generator.
Emmy, being a delicate woman and a veterinarian by profession, clearly had little knowledge of machinery.
She asked in slight distress, "How do I fix this? Isn't there an instruction manual or something?"
Though called a "Eerie Game," completing tasks wasn't as simple as holding down a key to automate progress.
A task like "Repair the generator" still required hands-on troubleshooting!
Yet Liam remained calm.
"This task has an estimated completion time of 10 minutes, meaning there's no major malfunction. From its appearance, it seems to be just a minor issue..."
"Besides, this is ultimately a Werewolf-style game. These 'tasks' are likely just tools to scatter players – they shouldn't be too difficult."
Liam contemplated, his gaze settling on the storage cabinet beside the generator.
A toolbox sat atop the cabinet, containing wrenches and screwdrivers.
Beneath the toolbox lay a booklet.
Liam gently lifted the toolbox and pulled out the booklet.
A thin booklet stained with black grease, its pages slightly curled at the edges, bore the title "Wolfe III Generator Instruction Manual" on the cover.
"Here's our lead."
Liam reached out and lightly flicked the booklet, speaking with a confident smile.
Emmy sighed in relief, gazing at Liam with admiration. "As expected of a real-life detective—even without 'Abilities,' your sharpness never falters."
Liam shrugged noncommittally and opened the booklet.
"Three indicator lights... If this light turns red, it indicates insufficient lubrication in the generator. Refill the lubricant oil—stored in the first-floor storage room."
The manual proved as straightforward as Liam had anticipated, allowing him to quickly identify both the issue and its solution.
"Need to fetch the lubricant from the first-floor storage? I'll go," Emmy offered. "I noticed that room on our way here."
Facing Emmy's proposal, Liam slightly furrowed his brows, his expression stern: "But we divided into pairs precisely to avoid acting alone."
A smile surfaced on Emmy's face: "However, the mission timeframe is urgent. You should stay here and study this machine further - what if we obtain the lubricant but fail the mission because we can't find where to apply it?"
"Don't worry about my safety. This was always a dangerous game... Besides, I've said before - this life is already a second chance anyway."
She spoke with her hands clasped behind her back, tilting her head slightly. Her tone was light and her expression playful.
Hearing this, Liam nodded: "Very well. According to mission assignments, only the otaku and the teacher's group remain on the first floor. Return quickly and you should be fine."
"Try to keep it within five minutes and thirty seconds. Exceeding that duration would put you in greater danger."
Liam remarked calmly.
As for why it was five and a half minutes, he didn't explain it to Emmy.
"I'll be quick to leave and return. There's still the countdown, after all!"
Emmy said with a smile, leaving the engineering room and casually closing the door behind her.
In an instant, only Liam remained inside the room.
The calm and arrogant expression instantly vanished from Liam's face.
He vigorously rubbed his face with his hands.
Even during that moment alone with Emmy earlier, he had still been "acting".
He was playing the role of a conceited, clever "detective" who liked to control situations.
Why five and a half minutes?
Liam had just blurted out a random number – after all, he wanted Emmy to return as quickly as possible.
"If only I could genuinely gain superhuman observational and logical analysis abilities by making others believe I'm some kind of 'great detective'..."
Liam rubbed his temples with a headache.
He considered himself reasonably intelligent – Riverton Media Performance Department ranked top three nationally, and its admission scores were very high.
Usually, learning acting courses and self-studying psychology have been relatively easy.
Due to participating in drama club and frequent stage performances, I've developed strong psychological resilience, enabling me to force myself to calm down quickly.
Liam felt he indeed had some advantage in "analyzing others".
But in this life-or-death game, Liam realized that his intelligence and composure... were far from sufficient!
After all, Liam was just a sophomore acting student, whose greatest strength was his extensive theater performance experience.
He couldn't track everyone's movements, nor truly discern people's thoughts to directly identify the wolf, let alone maintain complete calmness in life-and-death situations!
Moreover, since earlier, Liam had vaguely sensed something "off" about this game—from the rules to other players' reactions, there were strange details everywhere!
Yet he couldn't figure out how to explain these anomalies.
However...
Even if not smart enough, one must desperately keep playing.
Liam adjusted his mindset.
"If I can't figure something out, I'll stop thinking about it first."
"This five-minute alone time... must be utilized properly."
With this thought, Liam's eyes began searching around the room.
