Chapter 9: The rooftop adventure
The next day, Akane arrived at school with a mix of nerves and curiosity. Her mind was still reeling from the revelation that Zenkichi was her childhood friend, something she'd long forgotten. But she was determined not to let it bother her—or so she told herself. She had been handling things perfectly fine on her own, and she wasn't about to let this sudden twist change that.
The day dragged on with its usual classes until lunch break. Akane decided to go to the library to catch up on some reading. Just as she was getting lost in her book, she heard a soft whistle from the library entrance. She looked up, surprised to see Zenkichi motioning to her from the door.
"Come on, Akane," he whispered urgently, beckoning her over with a mischievous grin. "I've got something cool to show you."
Akane frowned, glancing around to make sure no one was watching. "What are you talking about?" she whispered back.
Zenkichi rolled his eyes. "Stop being so serious all the time! Just trust me. It'll be fun."
Akane hesitated, feeling the tug of curiosity. Normally, she would have declined, but something about Zenkichi's grin made it hard to say no. Reluctantly, she closed her book and joined him at the door.
As they slipped out of the library, Akane gave him a suspicious look. "So, what exactly is this 'cool' thing you want to show me?"
"You'll see. It's a surprise," Zenkichi said with a smirk, leading her down the hallway. He moved with a confidence that made her suspect he'd been planning this for a while.
They walked past several classrooms and into a stairwell that led up to the school's rooftop. Akane's eyes widened as Zenkichi opened the door to the rooftop, revealing a wide-open space with a perfect view of the city skyline.
"What… what are we doing up here?" Akane asked, glancing around nervously. "We're not supposed to be on the roof, you know."
Zenkichi chuckled. "Relax. No one ever comes up here during lunch. It's the best spot in the whole school. I come up here sometimes to get away from everything."
Akane had to admit the view was breathtaking. The sprawling city stretched out before them, the rooftops glinting in the midday sun. She could even see the river winding its way through the city, and far off in the distance, the faint outline of mountains.
Zenkichi walked over to the edge of the roof and leaned against the railing, looking relaxed as ever. "Pretty amazing, right?"
Akane approached cautiously, still feeling a bit uneasy about breaking the rules. But as she took in the view, her nervousness melted away. "I… I had no idea this place existed."
Zenkichi grinned. "Well, now you know. Consider it our secret spot."
Akane felt a small smile tugging at her lips. For a moment, she forgot about everything else—their rivalry, the awkwardness of their recent revelation, even the unease she'd felt around him. Up here, with the world spread out below them, it was like they were in their own little world.
But just as she was starting to relax, Zenkichi glanced at her with a mischievous glint in his eye. "Hey, you ever climbed down to the fire escape?"
Akane's eyes widened. "The what?"
He pointed down to a metal ladder that extended down the side of the building, leading to a lower part of the school. "There's a whole section down there that students never go to. It's like a little hidden garden or something."
Akane shook her head. "Are you crazy? That sounds dangerous!"
Zenkichi shrugged, looking completely unfazed. "Not if you're careful. I do it all the time. Come on, where's your sense of adventure?"
Akane hesitated. She had never been the adventurous type, and the idea of climbing down a fire escape ladder sounded ridiculous. But something in Zenkichi's expression made her want to take the risk. Maybe it was the way he looked at her, challenging her, daring her to step outside her comfort zone.
"Fine," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "But if we get caught, I'm blaming you."
Zenkichi grinned, clearly pleased with her answer. "Deal. Now follow me."
With that, he swung one leg over the railing and began descending the fire escape ladder with ease. Akane took a deep breath and followed him, gripping the cold metal tightly as she carefully made her way down. Her heart pounded in her chest, but there was an undeniable thrill that came with the risk.
When they reached the lower platform, Akane gasped. Below them was a small, hidden courtyard filled with overgrown plants and vines, like a secret garden tucked away from the rest of the school. It looked like something out of a fairy tale.
"See?" Zenkichi said, gesturing to the garden with a proud smile. "Told you it was worth it."
Akane stepped off the ladder, taking in the sight. There were benches covered in ivy, and flowers blooming in wild colors, their petals swaying in the gentle breeze. It was beautiful, untouched, almost like it had been forgotten by the rest of the world.
"Wow," she whispered, unable to hide her amazement. "How did you even find this place?"
Zenkichi shrugged. "I stumbled on it by accident last year. It's been my secret spot ever since. No teachers, no students… just peace and quiet."
Akane walked over to one of the benches and sat down, letting out a sigh. She hadn't realized how much she needed a moment like this, away from the pressures of school, friends, and… well, Zenkichi himself. But now, with him sitting beside her, she felt a strange sense of calm.
They sat in silence for a while, both of them lost in thought, when suddenly Zenkichi broke the silence.
"Remember when we used to play in that old playground near your house?" he asked, his voice soft.
Akane's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't thought about that playground in years. "Yeah… we used to play hide-and-seek there all the time. I remember how mad you'd get when you couldn't find me."
Zenkichi laughed, a warm, genuine sound that made her smile. "You were impossible to find! You always hid in the weirdest places. I remember one time you hid in that rusty old slide, and I spent half an hour looking for you."
Akane chuckled. "I was good at hiding. You just weren't very good at finding me."
He nudged her playfully. "Hey, I was good at a lot of things. Like getting you to laugh when you were having a bad day."
Akane felt a pang of nostalgia, the memories flooding back. She had forgotten so many of those little moments, but now, sitting here with Zenkichi, they all came rushing back. It was strange, realizing that they had been so close once, only to become strangers over the years.
As if sensing her thoughts, Zenkichi looked at her with a gentle smile. "You know, Akane, just because we drifted apart doesn't mean we can't... reconnect. I know we're not exactly friends now, but… maybe we don't have to be enemies either."
Akane looked down, her mind racing. She didn't know if she was ready to let her guard down around him, not after everything that had happened. But she couldn't deny the sense of comfort she felt sitting here with him, like they were two kids again, sharing a moment in their secret hideout.
"Maybe," she murmured, glancing at him with a shy smile. "But don't expect me to go easy on you in class."
Zenkichi laughed, his eyes lighting up with amusement. "Wouldn't dream of it. But don't worry, I can handle whatever you throw at me."
They spent the rest of the lunch break talking and laughing, their rivalry momentarily forgotten. It was a strange feeling—like they were rediscovering each other after all these years, finding a new version of the friendship they had once shared.
As the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, Akane and Zenkichi climbed back up to the rooftop and slipped into the hallway just as students began streaming back to class. They exchanged a quick, knowing smile before going their separate ways, both of them feeling a little lighter, a little more connected.
But as Akane walked back to her class, she couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something new—something that would change her life in ways she hadn't anticipated.
