From Foes To Soulmates

Chapter 17: Bond

The days after Zenkichi's confession felt like a breath of fresh air. Things between him and Akane returned to normal—or as normal as their banter and jokes could be. There were no more awkward silences or unnecessary tension, and, thankfully, no more chocolate pranks. But as much as Zenkichi's apology had set things straight, Akane couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to the story. Something in his eyes that day, the way he hesitated before speaking, left her wondering if there was still a piece of the puzzle missing.

It was Friday afternoon, and the school was buzzing with excitement for the upcoming weekend. The weather had turned pleasantly warm, and the students were in high spirits as they made plans for the evening. But Akane, with her usual inquisitive mind, found herself distracted. She had to admit that Zenkichi's prank had gotten under her skin more than she was willing to admit. She had thought they had been just friends—nothing more, nothing less—but lately, something had been changing.

Zenkichi, as always, was in the middle of his group, laughing loudly with his friends. As Akane watched from a distance, she couldn't help but notice how effortlessly he fit into the group, how natural he seemed with everyone around him. Yet, whenever their eyes met, there was that fleeting moment of something deeper—something unspoken.

Akane snapped herself out of her thoughts. No. She couldn't keep doing this. It was just a silly prank, nothing more. But the tiny voice in her head persisted, reminding her that sometimes, things were more complicated than they appeared.

---

Later that day, Akane found herself walking alone through the school courtyard, reflecting on everything. She wasn't entirely sure what she was looking for, but the peaceful silence was a welcome break from the chaos of the school day. As she passed under a large tree, she nearly bumped into someone.

"Oh, sorry!" Akane exclaimed, looking up to find Zenkichi standing right in front of her, a sheepish smile on his face.

"Didn't see you there," he said, his tone casual. "Lost in thought?"

Akane rolled her eyes. "Yeah, just thinking about how complicated things get when people don't communicate properly."

Zenkichi gave her a curious look. "Are we talking about me?"

Akane paused, glancing at him. "Maybe."

He raised an eyebrow. "If you're still mad about the whole chocolate thing, I promise I won't leave you anymore weird surprises. You've got my word."

Akane's lips twitched upward despite herself. "It's not just the chocolate, Zenkichi. It's more than that."

Zenkichi seemed to take a moment before speaking, his tone softer than usual. "Then what is it?"

Akane stared at him for a moment, unsure of how to phrase it. But then, an idea hit her.

"You know, you always make everything about yourself," she said with a smirk. "It's like you're this walking bundle of mystery and drama, and everyone just has to play along."

Zenkichi scoffed playfully. "Hey, I can't help it if my life's this interesting. Not everyone can pull off a dramatic entrance like I do."

Akane chuckled, shaking her head. "You really think your life's that interesting?"

"Of course!" Zenkichi said, puffing out his chest like he was some kind of superhero. "People are drawn to the drama. I'm a living legend."

Akane laughed out loud, shaking her head in disbelief. "A living legend, huh? Is that what you tell yourself when you look in the mirror?"

Zenkichi's grin faltered slightly. "Well, maybe not. But I mean, you can't deny I've got a certain... charm."

Akane shot him a mock skeptical look. "Is that so? Because last I checked, you were the one hiding behind silence and making things awkward."

Zenkichi looked at her, a bit taken aback by her frankness. Then, as if remembering the earlier days of their interactions, his expression softened. "Alright, I get it. I can be a little over the top sometimes."

Akane smiled. "Yeah, just a little."

There was a pause, a strange kind of understanding settling between them. Zenkichi's usual teasing was gone, replaced by something less playful but more sincere. Akane realized she had never seen him quite like this—vulnerable, if only for a second.

"Hey, Akane," Zenkichi said quietly, breaking the silence. "Thanks. For putting up with me. For being... well, not giving up on me."

Akane blinked, not expecting this kind of honesty. She looked at him, her smile softening. "You're welcome, idiot."

Zenkichi chuckled. "I'm seriously starting to believe that's your favorite nickname for me."

Akane rolled her eyes, but there was no mistaking the warmth in her chest. "It fits you."

Zenkichi grinned. "You know, for once, I think I'm starting to like being the idiot."

---

As they walked together, heading back toward the main building, Akane couldn't help but feel a strange sense of calm between them. There was still a lot of teasing and mischief to come, no doubt, but this was different. Zenkichi had never been this open with her before, and even though he wasn't the easiest person to understand, Akane felt that perhaps, in his own way, he was starting to understand her too.

By the time they reached the classroom, Akane felt lighter than she had in days, the confusion about their friendship—whatever it was—beginning to fade. Maybe there didn't need to be labels. Maybe they could just be friends, or maybe something more, but for now, she didn't need to overthink it. Whatever it was, it was real.

As they entered the classroom, Zenkichi turned to her with a mischievous grin. "So, what do you think? Still a living legend in your eyes?"

Akane chuckled and rolled her eyes. "Definitely a legend… in your own mind."

Zenkichi winked. "I'll take that as a compliment."

With that, they walked in together, the weight of unspoken words finally lifting as they took their seats. Life at school seemed a little lighter now, a little less complicated—at least for the moment.

But Akane couldn't shake the thought that something new was quietly growing between them, and maybe, just maybe, this would be the start of something neither of them had expected.
