Frieren: Demon of Domination

Chapter 80: Gaze from the Future (Part 1)

Two hundred years ago—

At the continent's northernmost end, in the Demon King's Castle standing in the Ende region.

Aura the Guillotine, who had been personally granted the title of one of the new Seven Sages of Destruction by His Majesty the Demon King,

Found her path blocked by a tall figure in a great hall somewhere in the Demon King's Castle.

The moment she saw this person, along with another Seven Sages of Destruction member following beside him—Miraculous Grausam—

Aura had to stop in her tracks, her heart racing and breathing becoming rapid.

Although she was extremely afraid of the guy before her,

For the sake of maintaining face as a new Seven Sages of Destruction member—

Aura forcibly suppressed the fear welling up in her heart, putting on an appearance of calm composure.

"The Omniscient One Schlacht, Miraculous Grausam—"

"As fellow members of the Demon King's army under His Majesty's command, why are you blocking my path?"

Schlacht remained motionless, as if turning a deaf ear to Aura's inquiry.

Grausam was the same.

He stood quietly behind Schlacht, awaiting orders from this demon prime minister.

Seeing that Schlacht had yet to respond but still stood immovably before her,

Aura calmed the panic in her eyes and spoke again with feigned composure.

"Schlacht, what exactly are you—"

This time her words were cut off halfway.

"Frieren—"

Schlacht murmured this name completely unknown to Aura as if no one else was present.

"Your curiosity is too strong. The Demon King's Castle when His Majesty was still present is not something you can spy upon."

He gestured helplessly for Grausam beside him to step forward.

"If you really want to know those secrets, go ask that guy yourself."

"As long as I still exist in this era, don't dream of finding any secrets about His Majesty in the memories of the Grand Demons."

Seeing the Heaven's Guidance Magic flickering in Grausam's hands—

Aura unconsciously stepped back two paces, swallowing nervously.

Even without much thought, she could tell that Schlacht intended to have Grausam tamper with her memories.

And from the looks of it, he had absolutely no intention of discussing this with her.

This was simply trampling her dignity as one of the Seven Sages of Destruction underfoot in humiliation.

So although she harbored fear toward this mysterious riddle man—

To avoid becoming a laughingstock among the Grand Demons,

Aura finally managed to speak up:

"Frieren?"

She looked at Schlacht, who completely ignored her presence, with confused eyes.

"What are you talking about so nonsensically, Schlacht?"

Aura steadied her breathing, the Scales of Obedience falling into her hands.

The fluctuations of Domination Magic confronted Grausam's Heaven's Guidance Magic head-on.

"After saying a few incomprehensible, completely baffling words, you plan to tamper with my memory—"

"Should I understand this as a show of force?"

Aura, who thought everything Schlacht was trying to do stemmed from his personal agenda, spoke with a heavy tone.

She looked ready to fight at the slightest disagreement.

As if finally realizing that Aura was also present—

Schlacht calmly withdrew his gaze that had been looking somewhere unknown.

He lowered his head and, in an emotionless tone, quietly observed Aura who was on high alert.

"First, a small fry like you isn't qualified to receive a show of force from me."

"Second, what I said isn't something you should know right now, so whatever I say, you should just obey."

"Third, if you don't want to die, put away your magic. Otherwise, I don't mind killing you here."

Her pupils contracted slightly, not doubting the truth in Schlacht's words at all.

But even so—

The new Seven Sages of Destruction member chose not to lose face as a Grand Demon.

"Schlacht, aren't you being overly arrogant?!"

"As fellow Grand Demons under His Majesty the Demon King, attacking me without restraint in the Demon King's Castle—aren't you afraid of His Majesty's punishment?"

Although her words sounded tough—

Aura could never deceive herself.

Fear was spreading through her heart,

Fear of Schlacht who had no undead legion to block him.

"His Majesty's punishment? What a joke."

Schlacht's sneer made Aura feel insulted.

But his mysterious and profound gaze made Aura tremble with fear—

She could only continue listening to his mockery in nervous submission.

"The strong prey upon the weak, survival of the fittest—this has been demonkind's unchanging principle for thousands of years."

"Moreover, when has His Majesty ever cared about mutual slaughter among us Grand Demons?"

"To be so panicked that you'd blurt out such words, Aura, just how afraid of me are you?"

Afraid...

Although I am indeed afraid, you actually dare to say it so blatantly...

Schlacht, you bastard—

Aura faced Schlacht with gritted teeth, her tone still defiant.

"Afraid of you?"

"Schlacht, don't be so conceited. If Grausam weren't here, I would have already—"

Watching Grausam temporarily step aside at Schlacht's signal,

Aura's words had to be cut off mid-sentence.

Yet Schlacht still maintained his high and mighty posture, calmly looking down at her.

"Now Grausam is gone. What was that 'would have already—' you mentioned?"

"Go ahead and perform."

"Schlacht, you bastard—"

Aura's brow furrowed tightly, her fierce exterior hiding inner weakness.

"Do you really think I don't dare attack you?"

"So you do dare?"

"If it weren't for respecting His Majesty the Demon King, if my undead legion were still by my side—"

"I would have torn you to pieces long ago, Schlacht!!"

Schlacht chuckled softly, as if finding this answer truly laughable.

He looked down at Aura, his eyes radiating undisguised contempt.

"Respecting His Majesty the Demon King?"

"Then if I told you that what I'm executing now is His Majesty's command, would you comply?"

No answer, nor was one needed.

Because the answer could only be impossible.

Schlacht shook his head with an unsurprised tone.

"Aura, is this what you call respect?"

"I can't see the slightest loyalty to His Majesty the Demon King in your reaction."

Although everything Schlacht said was true, it truly infuriated Aura.

"The Omniscient One Schlacht, are you questioning His Majesty the Demon King's judgment?"

"I am one of the Seven Sages of Destruction personally appointed by His Majesty. You actually dare doubt my loyalty to His Majesty—"

Aura raised the scales in her hand, trying to mask her inner panic.

She suppressed the trembling in her voice and looked up at Schlacht defiantly.

"If what you're executing now is truly His Majesty the Demon King's command, I would naturally comply without hesitation."

"But I believe this is just your own arbitrary decision, right?"

"After all, why would His Majesty care about such things—"

"Schlacht, you're simply acting recklessly according to your own ideas, aren't you!"
