Chapter 50: Chapter 50: The Labyrinth Unfolds
Hearing what Merlin said, Su Ya was startled:
"You said... we're being watched?!"
"Where are they? Who's watching us?"
Merlin turned her head, carefully examining the sand that had turned into mud on the ground. Strange formulaic patterns rapidly flashed across her rose-colored eyes. Relying on these unique eyes that could see the flow of magic, she continuously deciphered the phenomena appearing before her.
After a moment, she looked up at Su Ya.
"We should have discussed what an army would encounter on its march."
Su Ya immediately replied, "You said an army would only encounter another army, so we're very likely to run into Ptolemy's army wandering here."
"And non-semi-heroic level professionals would just steer clear of organized armies."
"Right!" Merlin nodded, then added,
"However, there's another possibility—"
"If we run into a fully equipped tactical squad with cavalry or swordsmen, spearmen or assassins, archers, and mages."
"Such a complete unit, composed of master-level individuals, possesses the possibility of hunting down armies of less than five hundred people."
Lucan raised an eyebrow and asked, "Are you talking about 'Headhunters'?"
Su Ya was stunned: "Headhunters?"
This was another new term he didn't understand.
Dagonet immediately explained from the side:
"Headhunters are a group of free individuals outside the army who specialize in hunting down professionals hidden within armies.
They contact high-ranking military officials to obtain intelligence on small-scale units and the professionals hidden within them. They form complete tactical squads, with mages setting up barriers in advance for ambushes and hunts."
"Because the mages of Lycaon pursue the 'First Cause of the World,' attempting to reach the root they seek by establishing an ultimate logical model covering reality, a wonder-level grand magic. The basic material needed for this wonder is the 'battle patterns' on our bodies."
"Within the Macedonian Empire, the demand for live or dead professional bodies emerged more than ten years ago, forming a complete trade chain and giving birth to 'Headhunters' who make a living from it."
At this point, Dagonet coughed dryly, looked at the group, and asked with trembling lips:
"Miss Merlin, Lucan, and my King, since such terrifying enemies have appeared ahead, I think we should take a detour?"
"After all, the current priority is to reach the city of Sol!"
Lucan didn't speak, just looked at Merlin.
Merlin shook her head.
"It seems a bit late to say that now."
"We've already entered the barrier. To break this barrier by brute force would require at least a semi-heroic level combatant to unleash their Noble Phantasm and attack the barrier's weak point with full power."
Dagonet's face turned pale.
Su Ya, however, didn't feel particularly nervous, as he didn't understand the predicament he was in, nor did he grasp the meaning of the vague terms Dagonet used.
At worst, it's a fight!
He could only look at Merlin helplessly and ask, "What should we do then, Merlin? Quickly use your super brain to come up with an idea!"
Merlin instinctively felt Su Ya's words carried a bit of ambiguity and immediately glared back at Su Ya. However, remembering that Su Ya had said 'idea king' was a compliment to her, she huffed and raised her small head, smiling proudly:
"The structure of this barrier is clear at a glance to this mage."
"I need some time to find its 'origin' through the spirit脉, deconstruct its magical foundation to reverse the concept, and destroy the magic's logic."
"During this time, you must ensure the cavalry survives as much as possible, as we'll rely on them later to avoid detection eyes."
Su Ya nodded, suddenly enlightened:
"So, this is a defensive battle!"
Although he didn't know why the 'King' who should have been protected now had to step forward to protect his soldiers,
Su Ya had no objection to this at all, as these people were extremely important allied units!
Lucan, on the side, looked slightly up towards the north of the bone forest, his eyes narrowing as if he sensed something.
His expression darkened, and he interrupted somewhat reluctantly:
"I don't think so."
Su Ya was surprised and asked, "What?"
Lucan didn't answer Su Ya but instead turned his head and urgently ordered Dagonet:
"Dagonet, immediately organize everyone—"
"Prepare to charge!"
However, before Lucan could finish his words,
Just then,
In the distance,
Two fierce figures slowly walked out of the bone forest, in plain sight of everyone.
These two knights wore Greek-style Boeotian helmets and light bronze breastplates. They were at least 1.9 meters tall, dragging three-meter-long spears behind them, and had short swords at their waists.
They walked calmly and indifferently, their faces showing a complete disregard for the hundred-man cavalry regiment before them. After scanning their surroundings, their gaze fell upon Lucan, the only one present who seemed like a strong individual.
Feeling the powerful aura radiating from these two, Dagonet's heart tightened, and he immediately understood Lucan's intention—
These two were also master-level, just like Lucan and himself, and at least one mage capable of controlling the barrier was hidden in the shadows!
Their side was at a disadvantage in terms of high-level combatants. Their only advantage was the cavalry they possessed, and Dagonet's own special ability, [Shadow Vanish], which made him difficult to detect, thus concealing the fact that they had another master-level individual.
A master-level knight leading a hundred-man cavalry charge, even if it meant casualties for the cavalry, could at least incapacitate one of the enemies, thus leveling the playing field in terms of high-level combatants.
Thinking of this,
Dagonet clenched his sweaty hands into fists, still unable to stop his body from trembling. He bit his lip slightly and glanced at Su Ya beside him.
The next moment, he immediately put his hands behind his back and signaled to the cavalry behind him.
The plate-armored cavalry clustered behind Dagonet understood his meaning and roughly knew what to do at this moment.
These novice professionals were not originally qualified to wear this plate armor. It was only due to the chaos on the day King Uther died that Dagonet, who had always guarded against Lucan but had to rely on him to escape, brought them out.
Therefore, they never took off these full-face, bucket-shaped helmets, which only had breathing holes and eye slits, even when cooking for the king.
But this group, who managed to seize the opportunity to escape from such a chaotic situation, were clearly not fools.
They understood, and the only thing they could understand, was that
To survive on such a chaotic battlefield, the only way was to obey!
Without much communication, or even just a single gesture, these cavalrymen, though not well-trained but possessing extremely high obedience, immediately pulled on their reins and adjusted their postures.
They were just waiting for Dagonet's command,
And they would charge towards death!
However,
At this moment—
Looking at the small movements of the cavalry before them, the two master-level spearmen standing in front of the army snorted coldly, a sneer appearing on their faces.
The next instant,
The two of them spread out in a Y-shape, their targets very clear: one charged directly at Lucan, while the other rushed towards the cavalry led by Dagonet!
And at the same time,
"—Rumble!!"
Su Ya only felt the ground beneath his feet suddenly vibrate wildly!
Countless grains of sand turned into mud and water, shooting up five meters high. The ground he could feel beneath his feet became alternately soft and hard.
Then,
The ground within nearly a thousand meters around transformed into blocks of 10 cubic meters.
Collapsing, covering, rising!
The entire southern area of the Morl Bone Forest transformed into a massive imaginary labyrinth under the influence of magic!
And in this near-catastrophic scene,
The only thing Su Ya could do was look at the mage girl in front of him, who also appeared somewhat bewildered, blinking at him.
Then, his pupils constricted!
He tightly grabbed her hand, forcibly pulling Merlin, who was on a different block, from her original position into his arms, holding her tightly as he rolled and leaped onto another cube with a drop of over 5 meters!
The next instant,
Whoosh!
A dazzling blue light point ignited high behind Merlin, rapidly growing from small to large, pulling out a streak of blue light, and slammed into the ground where Merlin had stood, blasting a crater over a meter wide!
