Chapter 31: Getting caught
Back at the Qin Residence – Study Room
After a hearty lunch and a brief rest, Qin Wei was once again back at his desk, sleeves rolled up, his focus razor-sharp.
Seals flared to life under his palms, one after another, as chakra flowed into the stack of yellow rice papers beside him.
His nonstop work yielded 50 exploding talismans and 20 storage talismans every hour. He was so engrossed in it that he didn't even see time passing away. By the time it was dark outside, the floor around him was lined with neat stacks of completed seals.
He leaned back, rotating his wrist with a light pop and letting out a slow breath."Oh, God… I'm finally done with these seals."
He looked at the final tally with a small, satisfied grin: 683 Exploding Talismans and 317 Storage Talismans
He nodded to himself.
"Preparation complete. Time for the next step, sales."
Standing up, he brushed dust from his robes, then called out: "Roulan… Roulan!"
A few moments later, Roulan stepped into the room. Her eyes quickly scanned the scene, the stacks of finished talismans, before settling on him with a hint of curiosity.
"Young master, you called?"
Qin Wei turned to her, speaking casually. "Yeah. How much money do we need to set up a street stall?"
Roulan blinked in surprise. "A stall? Young master… do you mean to personally sell these?"
Qin Wei gave her a matter-of-fact look, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "Of course. I didn't make them out of a hobby. I need money. I can't live on matrilocal allowance for the rest of my life, you know."
Roulan's brows furrowed slightly, clearly processing this unexpected answer."But… Young Master, isn't it beneath your status? The Emperor's own nephew is selling wares in the market? Wouldn't it hurt His Majesty's reputation, too?"
Qin Wei snorted and crossed his arms. "Hmpf, as if I care about that man's image. As for mine? I'm the joke of Yongzhou. My reputation is at its worst. Besides, if people learn these talismans were made by me, they'll start recognizing my real worth, not the trash image they've painted. Who knows, this might actually improve my reputation. So, I can gain everything from selling these talismans."
Roulan looked at him for a long moment, then slowly nodded with a faint smile. "Young Master, did you remember that earlier today, I told you I took one of each talisman to the Patriarch?"
Qin Wei raised an eyebrow. "You said it was to keep them safe. I already told you that I don't blame you for that."
"While it was indeed to keep it safe, the Patriarch had them appraised by a Master Appraiser," she admitted the truth.
Qin Wei calmly listened to her explanation. "Go on."
Roulan continued, "The Patriarch was quite impressed by your talent. He said both talismans had high commercial potential. But, he doesn't know you made so many… or that you intended to sell them yourself."
Qin Wei leaned back, with his arms crossed, "So… what's your suggestion?"
Roulan hesitated briefly, then said, "If you're willing, shall I ask the Patriarch if the Li Clan stores can sell these on your behalf? It would save you the hassle of setting up a stall. And with the clan's reputation and reach, the sales would likely skyrocket."
Qin Wei studied her expression. Her voice was composed, but there was an unusual, subtle glint of excitement behind her eyes, too faint for most to catch, but not him. He narrowed his eyes slightly but then nodded. "Alright. If the Li Clan is genuinely interested, I won't stop them. But I want a formal contract with clear terms and conditions.
Roulan bowed slightly. "Understood. I'll relay your terms to the Patriarch and get a response by tomorrow."
As she turned to leave, Qin Wei watched her carefully, noting the faint spring in her step. "She seems excited. That's quite in contrast with her usual self," he thought. "Interesting…"
Next Morning — Qin Wei's Bedroom
A muffled groan slipped from Qin Wei's lips as consciousness dragged him from sleep. His body felt oddly restrained, something soft, warm, and faintly scented of herbs and jasmine pressed against his chest.
He cracked open an eye and spotted slender fingers curled against his robe. Long strands of midnight-black hair tickled his chin. And then, the eyes…
Wide, luminous, violet-hued eyes blinked up at him just a few inches away from his face.
His mind blanked for a second. "WHAT THE HELL!"
He shot up like he had been struck by lightning. The blanket tangled around his legs and yanked him sideways before he caught himself on the bedpost.
Across the bed, the girl rolled onto her back, yawning into the crook of her elbow. "Mmmh... morning, young master."
Qin Wei stared at her in disbelief. "Jiang'er? What are you doing in my bed? No, when did you even return? No, why did you return so quickly?"
She blinked at him, utterly unbothered by his words. She replied, "You told me to return when I broke through to rank-7."
Her voice was smooth, matter-of-fact, like she was discussing the weather. She sat up and stretched languidly, making Qin Wei avert his gaze, screaming in his head. "Damn those are just big. Concentrate, Qin Wei. Don't lose yourself to lust. Take a deep breath. Think of something else…" Taking one deep breath, Qin Wei returned his gaze to Jiang Ni, this time, making sure his eyes were no her face. "You said you broke through?"
She nodded.
"That fast?" he asked. "It's only been a few days."
But Jiang Ni only tilted her head, mischief flickering in her gaze. "You didn't think I could do it?"
He sighed and flopped back onto the bed, staring at the ceiling. "No... let's just say I envy your talent."
Silence stretched between them for a few seconds.
Then, under his breath, Qin Wei muttered, "If only the system had given me an Inspect Skill like all those overpowered protagonists, I wouldn't have to guess..."
Jiang Ni tilted her head. "Inspect skill? System?"
"Nothing. Forget it." He waved her off. "Just some morning ramblings."
She leaned in, grinning now. "So, anyway, Young Master, now that Jiang Ni has broken through as you asked, I can stay beside you, right?"
"Umm… Fine." Qin Wei had to accept in the end.
Jiang Ni grinned and then threw herself onto him, "Yay. Now, I'll never be separated from Young Master."
Qin Wei could only scratch his cheek. "Well, you still have to take permission, though."
"Whose permission?" Jiang Ni asked, her face just an inch from his. Her hands were around his neck.
"Young master," she whispered, her tone half-teasing and half-melancholy. "Madam Li has gone back to the sect. Young Master is free to live however he wants. And the Young master doesn't need to worry. Jiang Ni is there to fulfill your needs."
As Qin Wei stiffened slightly, feeling morning excitement down below his waist, Jiang Ni's smile curved gently before planting her lips onto his. Qin Wei shut his eyes, losing himself in lust, and both of them started making out intensely, their tongues dancing around each other.
After a while, Outside Moonvilla
Roulan's footsteps were brisk as she passed under the curved arch of the residence gate. The morning sun bathed the walls of Moonvilla in soft amber, yet a slight frown crept onto her face.
The two battle maids at the front bowed as she approached.
"Has the young master awakened yet?" Roulan asked.
"No, Miss Roulan. He hasn't stepped out since last night."
Roulan glanced toward the sky, brows pinched. "It's already past sunrise. He slept early too…"
Her fingers tapped against her sword sheath. Something didn't sit right.
Without another word, she moved past the guards and into the residence. The faint scent of tea lingered in the air, but it wasn't fresh. She didn't care about it and proceeded to the bedroom chamber.
She reached the door of Qin Wei's chamber and pushed it open without knocking.
And she froze instantly, spotting a stranger straddling beside Qin Wei on the bed, their positions undeniably intimate. Qin Wei seemed like he was looking at her, talking with her about something, but the creak of the door distracted their attention.
Qin Wei jumped like a cat that was startled by a sudden poke. "Roulan? When did you arrive?"
Roulan stormed forward, her boots thudding against the polished floor as her cloak flared behind her. "Young master," she said, voice low but sharp as steel, "what the hell are you doing behind Lady Xue's back?"
