Fairy Tail: The Faint Smile in Earthland

Chapter 146: Chapter 146 - Ruin and Resonance

📍 Outer Ruins near Talos Grove

A low morning fog wrapped the ancient ruins like a second skin, curling around broken archways and moss-covered statues. The air bit with cold and damp earth, carrying a faint, bitter scent—something far older than memory.

Teresa moved through the wreckage in silence, each step deliberate and light, the gravel crunching only faintly beneath her boots. Even here, far from Magnolia, a quiet smile touched her lips—not one of joy, but of resolve—a shield against the world's echo.

Behind her, Romeo adjusted his reforged flame sword, his eyes alert as he scanned the mist. His breath came in shallow gasps, his hands trembling for only a moment before he clenched them steady. Purpose replaced hesitation.

"You're hesitating," Teresa said softly, her voice slicing through the stillness.

Romeo flinched. "It's just… these ruins. They feel alive."

She paused, silver eyes unreadable. "They breathe because they hold echoes too old for you. Move like they might strike. Then your blade becomes real."

He swallowed hard, nodded. She turned away, silent—a lesson taught without comfort.

📍 Inner Ruins

Deeper inside, the ruins revealed recent damage: claw marks gouged into pillars, scorch lines from magic, and patches of purple ichor that shimmered under Teresa's gaze.

She knelt beside one stain, brushing the residue lightly.

"Pre-Era biomagic," she murmured. "They tried to merge magic with life—dangerous, desperate."

Romeo shivered. "They're trying to bring back… monsters?"

Teresa's smile was quick, almost sad. "To power-hungry people, monsters are tools. Fear is just raw potential."

His hand found his sword, flame whispering along its edge. No echo. Only the cut, he reminded himself.

A hiss echoed.

From between stone arches, a twisted creature lunged—part-human, part-reptile—with cracked scales leaking violet mist. Its eyes burned with hunger, not thought.

Romeo sprang forward, sword tracing a tight arc. Violet flame sizzled through its chest, but the beast forged on, reshaping around the wound.

Teresa's blade flashed. One precise thrust severed its head. The body slumped without sound. She flicked the blade clean.

Romeo panted. "It didn't feel pain… like it wasn't living."

"That wasn't a life," Teresa said, turning away. "It was an echo forced into flesh."

Romeo's grip tightened. "I thought… I saw a person."

She paused, gaze drifting into the mist. Something flickered in her eyes—memory, maybe regret. Then her smile returned, distant and steady.

"Belief is your echo to carry," she said. "Don't let it dull your edge."

📍 The Gate — Ancient Watcher

The fog thickened, shrinking the world to a few breaths ahead. Glyphs shimmered along warped stone walls. A presence waited—ancient and still.

Ahead, a massive stone gate appeared, etched with runes older than the land itself. From behind it came low growls, not one creature, but many breathing together.

Romeo froze. "This is it… the seed?"

Teresa placed her palm on the cold stone. The runes pulsed faintly—an acknowledgment, not alarm.

She stepped back, drawing her blade. "Beyond this gate aren't enemies. Only constructs. No mercy. Don't falter—or you won't return."

Romeo's heart hammered. Yet he met her gaze. "I won't falter."

Something shifted in her features, a rare softness—not pity, but respect. She nodded once. Together, they stepped toward the gate.

Behind the stone, the ancient runes began to glow…
