Chapter 140: Chapter 140 - The Shape of Returning Flame
Date: October X789 — Night
Location: Magnolia — Fairy Tail Guild Hall
📍 Guild Hall — Festival Night
The guild hall glowed with soft orange light from dozens of lanterns. Their warm glow danced across the walls, the floor, and the smiling faces of everyone inside. The room was full of life — laughter, clinking mugs, plates being passed from hand to hand.
Romeo sat at a long table with a half-eaten plate in front of him. He looked relaxed, but his fingers tapped lightly on the wood now and then — a habit from days when silence meant danger.
Macao, sitting nearby with a large mug, noticed. He smiled quietly, watching Romeo with the kind of pride that didn't need words.
"You're too quiet for a party," Macao teased, his voice rough but kind.
Romeo blinked, coming back from his thoughts. He smiled slowly. "Just... listening," he said. "I think it's the first time I've heard it. Every laugh, every voice… they sound like echoes — but warm ones."
Macao raised his mug. "That's what coming home feels like. You hear every piece of it because you know what it's like when it's gone."
Romeo nodded. This time, his fingers stopped moving.
Teresa stood near the tall windows, her arms loosely crossed. The moonlight made her hair glow silver against the dark wood.
She watched the room carefully — not with suspicion, but with quiet observation. Kinana's cheerful laugh, Max waving his arms too dramatically, Asuka running around with a paper lantern trailing behind her...
Asuka spotted her and beamed.
"Miss Teresa!" she shouted, running straight over and hugging Teresa's legs.
Teresa froze for a second, unsure. Then she slowly lowered her hands and rested them gently on Asuka's head.
"You came back!" Asuka said. "You promised!"
Teresa's lips parted, her usual calm breaking into something softer. "Yes," she said quietly. "I did."
Asuka giggled. "You have to stay! Papa says you're like a secret sword that watches over everyone!"
A soft sound escaped Teresa — not quite a laugh, but close. Across the room, Alzack and Bisca watched, smiling and nodding.
Romeo saw it all from across the hall. A new feeling filled his chest — not fire, not duty… something gentler. Something worth carrying.
He stood up suddenly, pushing his chair back. Macao looked at him but didn't say a word.
Romeo made his way across the room, weaving through dancers and cheers. He reached Teresa and Asuka just as the girl turned around.
"Romeo!" she squealed. "You came too!"
He knelt, smiling widely. "Of course. I couldn't let Miss Teresa get all the hugs."
Asuka wrapped her arms around his neck. He hugged her back gently.
Teresa watched them, her hand still resting on Asuka's shoulder. In her eyes was a flicker of something she hadn't realized she carried — an old echo, now softer.
Asuka grabbed both their hands. "Come dance!" she cried, pulling them toward a loose circle of dancing guild members.
Teresa hesitated, boots still. But Asuka tugged harder, giggling.
Romeo laughed and twirled Asuka into the dance. She squealed in delight, her lantern swinging wildly.
And then — slowly — Teresa stepped forward. She didn't dance like the others, but she moved in time, her steps quiet and steady, her hand still in Asuka's.
The guild noticed. Kinana gasped, smiling widely. Macao thumped his mug on the table in approval.
Romeo looked at Teresa and laughed — a clear, happy sound. She glanced at him, and their eyes met.
This time, her smile wasn't faint. It was real.
The music slowed. Reedus strummed a soft tune on his lute. Asuka leaned against Romeo, her eyelids heavy.
Teresa knelt beside them, brushing a curl from Asuka's face.
"She sleeps without echoes yet," she said softly.
Romeo nodded. "She will have them one day. Until then, we carry them for her."
Teresa looked at him, her eyes a little different now, not just thoughtful, but believing. She nodded, her hand still resting gently on the girl's head.
Macao came over and clapped Romeo's shoulder. "We'll set up a cot near the bar," he said. "She can sleep close while things wind down."
Romeo smiled. "Thanks."
Then Macao turned to Teresa. "It's good to have you both home."
She nodded, voice quiet. "Home," she repeated, like she was testing how the word felt in her mouth.
Later, when the hall was quieter and most of the guests had gone home, Teresa stepped outside. The night was calm and deep, the moon high in the sky.
Romeo joined her on the front steps, leaning on the railing next to her.
"You ever wonder," he said softly, "if all these echoes we carry… maybe they're why we can keep going?"
Teresa looked at him. Her silver eyes caught the moonlight.
"Maybe," she said. "Echoes don't just weigh us down. They remind us. They prove we lived… and chose."
Romeo smiled faintly. "Then I'll keep choosing. Even when it's hard."
She placed a hand on his shoulder, brief but steady.
"Then you'll keep becoming."
They stood in silence. The night felt peaceful. The echoes hadn't vanished, but they didn't scream anymore.
Above them, one last lantern floated up into the sky, its golden glow drifting like a promise.
