Fairy Tail: The Faint Smile in Earthland

Chapter 138: Chapter 138 - Beneath the Echoing Sky

Date: September X789 — Dawn

Location: Fiore — Eastern Forest, Temporary Encampment

📍 Forest Clearing — Morning Camp

The rising sun washed the forest in soft gold, making the long shadows dance between the trees. A light mist drifted around the roots, curling up like quiet breaths.

Romeo knelt by a small fire pit, carefully lighting a tiny flame. He watched it closely, as if he were having a quiet conversation with it.

Nearby, Teresa sat on a mossy rock, her sword resting across her lap. She listened to the gentle sounds of the morning — birds calling, leaves rustling in the breeze.

They had walked through the night after leaving the ruined council grounds. Neither spoke much. Their silence felt heavy, but it was a shared comfort, like a warm blanket on a cold night.

Finally, Romeo broke the quiet. "Last night… when we destroyed that hybrid core… I didn't feel proud," he said softly.

Teresa didn't look at him. Her eyes stayed on the treetops. "Pride fades quickly," she said. "It disappears before it can teach you anything."

Romeo nodded slowly. "Then… what should I feel?"

Teresa finally looked at him. Her eyes were calm, deep, and clear.

"Resolve," she said quietly. "Resolve shapes what comes next. The next move. The next choice."

Romeo looked back at the flame, letting her words settle in his heart like a steady warmth.

📍 Forest Clearing

As the fire crackled, Teresa stood up and slid her sword into its sheath with a soft click. Romeo looked up, not as a student copying a teacher, but as a partner learning to move together.

"We move before noon," she said. "There are more hybrid signals north of here. Task Force Nine will meet us there tonight."

Romeo stood too, brushing dirt off his cloak. His shoulders seemed stronger now, his movements more sure. He checked his sword's edge with careful fingers.

"Will it be like the last one?" he asked.

Teresa shook her head. "No. This one isn't meant to defend. It's designed to hunt."

A shiver went down Romeo's back despite the warm air. "Then we won't wait for it to come to us," he said.

A small smile flickered on Teresa's face — gone almost as soon as it appeared. "Correct," she replied.

📍 Forest Path — Moving North

They moved quickly along a narrow forest path, stepping over roots and ducking under low branches. Beams of sunlight broke through the leaves, shining on Romeo's hair and catching the silver threads in Teresa's cloak.

After a while, Romeo spoke again, hesitating. "When we get back to Magnolia… do you think Asuka will remember me?"

Teresa kept walking, but she turned her head slightly to think.

"She will," Teresa said. "She remembers those who keep moving forward — not those who disappear."

Romeo's eyes widened a little. "That's… nice to hear," he said softly.

Teresa didn't reply, but something in the space between them felt warmer, more open.

📍 Northern Ridge

By late morning, they reached a rocky ridge. Below, a valley spread out, with thin purple ether mist rising from the ground like ghostly vines.

Romeo knelt, squinting. "There," he pointed. "That's where it's hiding."

Teresa knelt beside him, touching the ground lightly. "Yes," she said. "The land is trying to reject it. The forest is echoing its pain, trying to push it out."

Romeo watched her hand, the way her fingers seemed to speak to the earth.

"How do you hear it all?" he asked suddenly. "The echoes… the cuts… how do you understand them?"

Teresa looked at him, pausing longer than usual.

"I don't always understand," she said softly. "I just listen. Then I choose what to carry forward… and what to let go."

Romeo thought about that for a long moment, then nodded slowly, a small spark of new understanding in his eyes.

📍 Forest Descent

They moved down the slope quietly. The closer they got, the thicker the mist became, sticking to their skin like sweat.

Near a twisted tree, they saw it: a creature hunched over a pit of glowing ether crystals. Its body looked like broken armor plates stacked together, shimmering with sickly light. Long limbs twitched, each tipped with sharp claws.

Romeo's breath caught. "It's… feeding," he whispered.

Teresa nodded. "It's building strength to evolve beyond control."

Romeo looked at her, fear and determination fighting in his eyes. "Then we stop it now," he said firmly.

She met his gaze, a flash of pride in her eyes. "Together," she replied.

📍 Ether Nest

Romeo charged first, fire exploding along his sword. He swung low, slicing off one of the creature's front limbs in a burst of blue and orange light.

The creature let out a high-pitched scream, shaking the trees around them. It swung back wildly with its claws.

Teresa slid in close, ducking under its swipe. Her sword flashed upward, cutting deep across its stomach.

Romeo twisted aside, landed lightly, and then lunged forward again. "Thrust," he whispered, driving his blade into a weak point between its plates.

The creature stumbled, black ether spilling and burning the ground. Teresa moved behind it, slashing through its back and cutting off the flow of magic.

The creature screeched, dragging itself toward the ether pit. Romeo sprinted after it, his face covered in sweat and dirt.

Teresa appeared beside him, running at the same speed. They exchanged a glance — no words, but everything was clear.

Together, they raised their swords and brought them down in one final, strong swing.

The creature collapsed forward, its body breaking into mist and fragments. The corrupted pit hissed as the ether faded away. The forest felt like it took a long, deep breath.

📍 Ether Pit — Aftermath

Romeo dropped to one knee, breathing hard. His fingers hovered above the ground, shaking.

Teresa stood above him, watching. When she finally spoke, her voice was gentle, almost kind.

"Your flame held," she said.

Romeo looked up, tears and sweat running down his face. "I… I almost lost it," he whispered. "But I kept hearing you… 'echo or cut.' I chose."

A small, warm smile appeared on Teresa's face — a rare and quiet gift.

"You chose well," she said.

📍 Forest Clearing — Heading Home

They stood together, looking around at the calm forest. The air felt clean again, every breath easier.

Romeo sheathed his sword and rolled his shoulder. "When we get back… I want to show Asuka my new forms. I want her to see that even echoes can be carried lightly."

Teresa's eyes softened. She reached out and ruffled his hair gently — something she had never done before.

"She will see," she said. "Because you'll show her — not with words, but by the way you move forward."

Romeo blinked in surprise, then let out a small, tired laugh — but it was a real laugh.

They turned toward the path home, their shadows long and blending in the soft morning light.
