Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Facing Akatsuki Academy

Charles didn't care why Akatsuki Academy attacked Hagun Academy. All that mattered was that these people were allies of that jester.

And that meant only one thing—he didn't need an explanation. He just needed to fight and defeat them.

The members of Akatsuki Academy sensed Charles's intent as well. It didn't take much to guess what he was thinking.

Their original plan was to thoroughly crush Hagun Academy. Things had gone off script, but it was too late to retreat now.

Besides, they were elites from Rebellion—there was no way they'd run from a fight.

So, after Charles took down Hiraga Reisui in a single blow, the others launched their attack.

A massive black lion lunged forward, its paws as wide as millstones.

On its back were two people.

A pink-haired girl wearing an eyepatch stood with her hands on her hips and declared, "My servant—Magic Beast Sphinx—is no ordinary beast! I've applied the Cursed Bloodline Ritual, engraved evil into its blood and soul to unleash the dark power within! A mere human body could never stand against it!"

Her maid promptly translated, "What the young lady means is: with my 'Obedience Collar,' I can convert any collared creature into a form of my Device. Since a lion already surpasses a human in raw power, giving it access to magic makes it extremely powerful."

The eyepatch-wearing girl in formal dress was Fumizuki Rinna, unmistakably a full-blown chūnibyō.

Her overly dramatic lines, paired with her maid's deadpan commentary, added a bizarrely comical layer to the intense battle.

But as her maid explained, Fumizuki Rinna's ability was undeniably powerful.

In this world, magic was considered a force determined at birth—destiny itself.

Yet Rinna could grant magic to creatures that had none. The lion she controlled, named Sphinx, easily had combat power on par with a B-rank Blazer. The title "Beastmaster" was well-deserved.

"Oh? The strength is impressive," Charles's voice came from beneath the Sphinx's enormous paw.

The lion tilted its massive head, a disturbingly human-like expression of confusion crossing its face.

Fumizuki Rinna mirrored the shock.

As the lion lifted its paw, they saw what had happened.

Charles stood there, having caught the blow with just one hand.

With the twin swords, Dragon Slayer and Dragonbane, manifested in his hands, Charles pressed his palm against the lion's paw and took a deep breath.

"Hah!"

With that single shout, the Sphinx—and the two girls on its back—were sent flying like they'd been struck by a warhammer.

The others could only watch in shock, not understanding what just happened.

Only two people caught on. Toudou Touka looked at Kurogane Ikki in disbelief. Ikki, however, smiled and said, "That's Charles for you—he's already mastered that move."

Touka recognized it at once—it was the same technique Ikki had used in his duel with her, the one that shattered her Device.

Though visually different, the principle was the same.

Using the flow of ki to manipulate and release magic in an instant to cause massive destruction. Charles had taught this ki technique to Ikki himself, so mastering it once he knew the theory was only natural.

Suddenly, frost crept across the ground, freezing Charles's feet in place.

It was Tsuruhashi Mikoto, "Frosted Smile," the only Akatsuki member Charles had previously met.

She was a former contestant from Chimon Academy, and they had briefly encountered each other during training. Her element manipulation allowed her to control cold air—capable of freezing matter down to absolute zero.

Ice and fire were natural opposites. But with a clear gap in magic power, she knew she couldn't freeze Charles directly. She was merely setting up an opening.

Todoroki Yui, wielding her chainsaw-shaped Device "Earth-Cleaver Centipede," slashed toward Charles's neck.

Her attack power was A-rank, purely due to her Device. Unlike regular blades, her chainsaw could tear through steel with the lightest touch.

Flames erupted, instantly melting the frost. Charles raised his arm to block the oncoming chainsaw.

Sparks flew, and the chainsaw was knocked upward. As powerful as it was, the gap in physical strength was too great.

Yui's defense was completely open. Her chest and abdomen exposed, Charles didn't hesitate.

"Flame Dragon's Iron Fist!"

But just as his punch landed, the force was completely returned to him, forcing him several steps back.

"So that's why they call you 'Unmoving'…"

Todoroki Yui's ability was a conceptual interference that reflected attacks.

Unlike the absorption-and-return type ability Charles had seen before, hers required less setup and left fewer openings.

And her physical attributes were far superior. Trying to use the same trick as before wouldn't work.

But the opening she created didn't go to waste—Fumizuki Rinna, now riding the Sphinx again, launched another assault.

"Beast King's Charge!"

The Sphinx rushed at Charles. With a body that size moving at speeds rivaling agility-type Blazers, the impact would be immense.

Charles, however, looked unimpressed. "This thing has no life in it. Who are you trying to fool?"

"What?! He figured it out? How?"

Nearby, the blonde girl wearing only a paint-stained apron muttered in confusion.

Even earlier, her dummies had been seen through. She didn't understand what her perfect artwork lacked.

Sara Labudlili, known as the "Bloody Da Vinci," was deeply troubled. Painting was her entire purpose in life.

This Sphinx was her creation—a dummy with power equal to the original.

But even so, it couldn't defeat Charles.

Charles leapt into the air and dropped his leg like a battle axe, shattering the fake Sphinx.

Behind the shattered remains stood the real Fumizuki Rinna.

"Let him witness your true power, Sphinx!"

At her command, the Sphinx roared at Charles.

"My Cursed Bloodline Ritual draws out dark power—this is the Beast King's Intimidation! A soul-shaking technique possessed only by the king of beasts!"

Maid Charlotte calmly translated, "What the young lady arrogantly meant is: now that I've turned it into my Device, it can use magic and sword techniques. Pretty cool, right?"

"Charlotte! That last part was unnecessary!"

"Deepest apologies, milady."

While the two bickered, Charles landed—and the Sphinx charged.

Charles raised his head, vertical pupils glowing in his eyes.

"Begone!"

The Sphinx froze mid-charge, nearly throwing off its riders.

As a beast, it sensed danger more acutely than humans. And right now, it clearly felt the presence of a predator far more terrifying than itself. Moving forward meant death.

It ignored its master's command and turned tail, fleeing at even greater speed!

"Hey! Sphinx, what are you doing?! Come back!"

Fumizuki Rinna's voice grew more distant until it vanished altogether.

Charles straightened up and looked at the remaining enemies.

"I've gathered enough intel. Now… it's time to end this."

A quick note on Dragon Slayer mages getting motion sickness:

A lot of people mention this trait in the comments. In the original work, this mechanic was always kind of vague.

While the explanation is that dragon power damages the semicircular canals (the inner ear) making it hard to balance, the symptoms seem largely psychological.

As long as they don't think something's a vehicle, they're fine—just like Natsu and Happy.

Also, since our protagonist here has a flight skill, he won't be countered so easily.
