Chapter 89: The True Sovereign
Chapter 89: The True Sovereign
Standing outside the outwardly open gates, the interior of the temple appeared as a blurred vision.
Before Tai Sui could ask anything further, the Dream-Eating Ghost stepped forward into the barrier.
Tai Sui followed closely behind, but the piercing brilliance of light forced it to squint, struggling to open its eyes at first.
Once it adjusted, Tai Sui looked inside. Only then did the true form of this magnificent hall reveal itself: vast like a sprawling plaza, its floor and walls were paved with glowing white stone bricks. Black, enigmatic lines seeped through them, resembling an enormous spider web. At the center of the web lay a solemn and silent black coffin.
All gazes converged upon the black coffin. An unprecedented urge to prostrate welled up in Tai Sui’s heart, akin to a guilty subject bowing before their sovereign.
Notably, the coffin had already been opened, though the lid was only partially closed.
“Did something else come here?” Tai Sui asked tremulously.
“Yes.”
The Dream-Eating Ghost gave a brief reply. For the first time, the vortex on its torso ceased flowing, and for the first time, Tai Sui detected a flicker of confusion and bewilderment in the ghost’s twin orbs of light.
“But… who else could have come here?”
With its short life and limited experience, Tai Sui found it hard to imagine any other creature capable of reaching this place.
“I don’t know. Aside from Tai Sui, the key to awakening the divine, no other living being can safely pass through the Pillars of Malevolence.”
At these words, Tai Sui suddenly recalled the weathered, crooked stone pillars outside. A terrifying suspicion surfaced.
It had assumed their appearance was due to the ravages of time, completely overlooking the possibility that they had been deliberately destroyed.
The Dream-Eating Ghost did not linger. It continued along the eerie black lines etched into the ground, heading toward the solemn coffin.
Hesitant, Tai Sui followed.
As they drew closer to the coffin, the Dream-Eating Ghost’s movements grew increasingly sluggish, as if weighed down by immense pressure. Tai Sui watched in astonishment, feeling as light as a feather, untouched by any resistance.
After a laborious trek, the two malevolent entities finally reached the black coffin. Their steps slowed as they cautiously approached the edge and peered inside…
Nothing. Empty.
Tai Sui stared at the Dream-Eating Ghost in shock, only to find that its twin orbs of light had turned pitch black. Its eight drifting tentacles hung limp, lifeless like dead fish.
After a long while, the Dream-Eating Ghost emerged from this abnormal state, though its glowing eyes had dimmed significantly.
“What happened to you?”
Instead of answering, the Dream-Eating Ghost extended a tentacle and placed it atop Tai Sui’s head.
A torrent of images surged into Tai Sui’s consciousness through the tentacle. Its six fish-like eyes widened even further. After the initial panic and terror subsided, a strange sense of relief and acceptance settled within it.
If it couldn’t escape the fate of being devoured by the Sovereign, then being consumed by him would be the best possible outcome.
The tentacle retracted, joining the others gathered near the vortex. From the vortex, You Su and Ji Lingruo were expelled, still unconscious.
The Dream-Eating Ghost then stretched out two more tentacles to lift the coffin lid. Upon contact, a sizzling sound of flesh burning echoed. This was no artifact it was worthy to touch, yet the Dream-Eating Ghost endured the sacrifice of two tentacles being scorched to push the lid fully aside, revealing the complete divine coffin.
Gently cradling You Su, it carefully placed him inside the black coffin. Covered in wounds and blood, the boy looked like a corpse. His faint breath, barely detectable before, vanished entirely once he was laid inside the coffin.
“What… what’s wrong with him?”
“He’s not dead. This coffin is made of Life-Sealing Stone, which absorbs his life force and holds it in safekeeping. The black blood flowing here contains the life essence once lost by the True Sovereign. And only you can make this blood flow back into his body.”
Only then did Tai Sui notice that the eerie black lines on the ground had begun to shift, and even the blackness of the coffin itself now flowed like a living thing, clinging to You Su’s body.
At that moment, the entire palace began to violently shake, as if the earth itself were venting its fury.
Tai Sui was confused, but the Dream-Eating Ghost turned its gaze toward the door. A voice echoed within Tai Sui’s consciousness: “Complete the ritual as quickly as possible. This is your mission. Do not fear death—we will never truly die.”
With that, the Dream-Eating Ghost gently placed Ji Lingruo down and began walking toward the exit.
“Where are you going?”
“The Lord of Mist seeks to disrupt the ritual. I must stop it.”
Tai Sui watched blankly as the Dream-Eating Ghost disappeared beyond the barrier of the gates. Despite its earlier declaration—”we will never truly die”—and despite its long-held desire for death, an unavoidable fear still gripped Tai Sui as it faced the prospect of its own demise.
It clung to the edge of the coffin, unaffected by the Life-Sealing Stone.
Its six fish-like eyes stared intently at You Su. Hesitantly, it reached out to touch his face but stopped midway, frightened. It remembered the time it had pretended to confess to You Su, and how he hadn’t flinched from its touch. Summoning courage, it extended its hand again—but a cold voice interrupted its movement.
“Don’t you dare touch him!”
The owner of the icy voice was Ji Lingruo.
Her brows furrowed in anger, she glared at the grotesque creature with loathing and hatred.
Startled by her sharp command, Tai Sui immediately withdrew its hand, like a cat caught sneaking a treat.
“You’re awake…”
“What do you want?!”
Ji Lingruo’s chest heaved with rage, like an angry lioness. Even now, the fact that this malevolent entity spoke with her voice filled her with disgust.
Terrified by the girl’s fierce tone, Tai Sui fell silent for a moment. Shifting its six eyes from Ji Lingruo back to You Su, it murmured softly, “I’m sorry…”
Ji Lingruo was momentarily taken aback by the apology. Her knowledge of malevolent entities was limited, and she’d never imagined one capable of apologizing… as though it weren’t a monster but a being with genuine emotions.
Taking a deep breath, Ji Lingruo said, “I don’t care what you’re planning to do. Right now, send us back—immediately!”
Her voice was harsh, yet despite facing an evil she couldn’t possibly resist, her determination to save her Senior Brother overcame her fear.
Hearing this, Tai Sui gently shook its head.
“Not yet. Senior Brother is dying.”
These words sent a chill through Ji Lingruo’s heart. She finally noticed how pale You Su’s face was, how none of his skin remained unscathed. Even more horrifying, the blackness of the coffin had seeped into his body, turning his veins pitch-black. But the blackness had stopped spreading, and Ji Lingruo realized: only the blood of the dead would cease to flow.
“How… how could this happen?!” All anger drained from Ji Lingruo as despair overwhelmed her. She collapsed to her knees, surrounded by an ocean of sorrow so vast that tears refused to fall.
From the very beginning, she had been nothing but a useless burden, unable to offer You Su any help, always sheltered under his protection. Hidden within his consciousness, she had listened as he recounted his struggles against Elder Ling while pretending to be her. Only then did she realize the immense effort he had made behind her back to protect her—and how she hadn’t even realized she was possessed.
She despised her own helplessness. Her eyes grew hollow, devoid of any light.
“Don’t give up. There’s still something you can do to save him.”
That voice, identical to her own, jolted her back to awareness.
