Chapter 67: Saving Acquaintances
Chapter 67: Saving Acquaintances
The faint voices excited You Su but also put him on high alert.
He gently pulled Ji Lingruo behind him and took the lead, both moving forward with the lightest steps possible. They had no idea whether the people ahead were friend or foe, so caution was essential.
As they drew closer, the voices grew clearer, and they could now make out what was being said. The sound seemed muffled, as if coming through a wall:
“Liu Nengwu! Have you gone mad? This food is meant to be brought back for everyone to share!”
“Huang Shi’an, don’t act so noble! I’m not crazy! Ugh… Anyway, there’s no hope left, so why should I starve to death?”
You Su recognized the voices—they belonged to two elderly mortals who had always treated him kindly.
Sure enough, at the end of the passageway was a wall. Judging by the volume of the voices, it was thin and appeared to have been built some time ago. You Su couldn’t help but feel puzzled. His master had said this well connected to the outside, so how could it be blocked?
“What if those evil entities don’t chase us and we survive? If you eat all the food, what will we bring back to save everyone?”
“Save them? We can barely save ourselves—how can we think about saving others?”
“Damn you, do you even have a conscience?! Everyone gave us every last bit of food before sending us out, hoping we’d find more. How dare you eat this life-saving food! Spit it out right now!”
No sooner had the words left his mouth than You Su heard the sound of the two men fighting.
From their brief exchange, You Su pieced together the situation: a group of villagers had taken refuge somewhere, and when their food ran out, these two were sent to gather more. However, they encountered evil entities and fled here. Liu Nengwu felt hopeless and didn’t want to starve, while Huang Shi’an opposed his selfish behavior.
It seemed not all passageways led to hidden paradises or forbidden legacies.
Just as You Su was silently criticizing their predicament, the fight abruptly stopped.
“Do… do you see that? That thing near the entrance…” Liu Nengwu’s voice trembled.
In the pitch-black cellar, a scorpion-like evil entity glowed with crimson fluorescence, standing not far away. Its exact features were obscured by swirling mist.
“Mm…”
“We’re done for…” Liu Nengwu, thin and frail, clutched the food tightly, trembling uncontrollably. “Damn it… I should’ve eaten more earlier…”
“Don’t eat anymore! Listen to me! There’s only one of it. I’ll lure it away—you run! Take the food and go back to save everyone! Do you hear me?! If I find out you’ve hidden and eaten it all, I swear I won’t forgive you even in death!”
Huang Shi’an, strong and sturdy, gripped Liu Nengwu’s shoulders firmly, his eyes filled with determination.
“Old Huang, you…”
“Shut up! The mist hasn’t spread fully yet—it won’t leave the fog. Stay here and don’t move. I’ll go to the right and draw it away. Once it follows me, you run!”
Huang Shi’an released his grip and cautiously moved along the stone wall to the right, not bothering to hide his footsteps. In the darkness, the evil entity’s glowing eyes burned like torches, eerie and piercing.
It had clearly seen the two men but hadn’t moved yet, seemingly waiting for the mist in the cellar to thicken, just as Huang Shi’an had predicted.
But what happened next shattered Huang Shi’an’s plan entirely. The scorpion-like entity wasn’t alone—two more identical ones emerged from the dark passageway!
Then, all three suddenly sprang into action. Two charged toward Huang Shi’an, while one lunged at Liu Nengwu.
Huang Shi’an refused to give up. He sprinted toward Liu Nengwu, trying to intercept the charging entity, shouting desperately, “Run! Run now!”
In the darkness, the entity leapt high into the air, its fluorescent glow illuminating Liu Nengwu’s terrified face. He had already collapsed on the ground, his complexion pale, his lips trembling uncontrollably.
Huang Shi’an was utterly despairing. If they died here, it meant the elderly, women, and children hiding with them would starve to death in the cellar.
“No!”
A deafening explosion rang out!
Chunks of rubble tumbled down, forcing the entity back. A flicker of candlelight illuminated the scene from behind Liu Nengwu.
A handsome youth wielding a celestial sword rushed forward with lightning speed, cleaving the entity in half with a single strike.
It all happened so fast that Huang Shi’an hadn’t even processed it when the youth darted toward him.
Seeing the youth’s relentless momentum, Huang Shi’an instinctively dropped to the ground. True to form, the youth swept his sword horizontally, eliminating the other two entities in one swift motion.
In the blink of an eye, all three entities were slain.
“Uncle Huang, are you alright?”
Huang Shi’an grasped the hand extended to him and looked up, only to realize the youth was none other than You Su.
“Help me…” Liu Nengwu, buried under the rubble, struggled weakly.
You Su hurried over and began clearing the debris off Liu Nengwu. Though battered by falling rocks, it was better than becoming fodder for the evil entities.
“You Su!” Despite his injuries, Liu Nengwu still clutched the food tightly. He raised his head, his eyes brimming with joy.
“Uncle Liu, it’s me.” You Su helped him to his feet.
Huang Bo approached, his voice still shaky after their narrow escape. “I never expected it to be you who saved us.”
“What do you mean?” Ji Lingruo suddenly interjected coldly.
Huang Bo stiffened, finally noticing the stunning young woman holding the candle. “This is…?”
You Su quickly stepped in front of his junior sister protectively. “This is my Junior Sister.”
Uncle Huang hesitated, realizing his careless remark might have offended the girl, and quickly clarified, “Please forgive me, young lady. It was an unintentional slip of the tongue. Old Huang thanks you for saving our lives, You Su.”
He bowed deeply, and Liu Nengwu followed suit. You Su hastily stopped them.
“There’s no need for such formalities—it was just a small effort.”
“Still,” Huang Shi’an asked, “what brings you here?”
“Junior Sister and I were hiding nearby. We accidentally overheard your voices through the wall and decided to break through to help.”
Huang Shi’an nodded. Liu Nengwu, rubbing his sore spots, remarked, “You Su, you truly are full of surprises. So many cultivators died in the western part of the city, yet you managed to keep Junior Sister safe for so long. Impressive!”
You Su frowned. He had initially hesitated about intervening. These two elders had cared for him since childhood, but after Qi Daodong detected Junior Sister’s possession, news of her condition might have spread. If these two reported them, it could lead to new complications.
Ultimately, he chose to trust them and acted. However, based on Uncle Liu’s words and demeanor, it seemed they were unaware of the situation. Moreover, what did he mean by “many cultivators died in the west”?
