Chapter 12: Chapter 12: A Meeting Gone Awry
A sleek red car zoomed through the desolate highway without care. It was Crimson who was callous about the rules given that a lot of the citizens had already started to vacate to safezones, others migrating to other countries where the fractures were less prominent.
Her mind was plagued with what would occur at the senator's office. A scuffle as they try to abduct her for experiments, interrogation as to how she was able to adapt to the fracture plague or try to recruit her to work for the state. The more she thought about it, the less likely the last option seemed viable and the first seemed more likely.
'Solon, you bastard!' She cursed in her mind as the scenery around her changed from abandoned buildings and settlements to more lavish and posh estates. She kept on driving at her pace before she was stopped at the driveway into the senator's office.
"Who are you?" A guard, skeptical and armed questioned as he walked to the driver's seat. The tinted window lowered slightly onto to reveal her eyes that shimmered like sapphire. "Crimson Sythe. Don't waste my time." And just like that she pulled the window back up.
The guard could only grit his teeth at the disrespect and raise the blockade letting her pass. Getting past the checkpoint, she drove to the parking lot where all kinds of lavish cars could be seen before she parked hers. 'A meeting, huh?' She concluded as she stepped out of her car.
The fracture covered the entire sky with a single streak which reflected on her smoked red tinted cat eye glasses. Adorned in an asymmetrical red gown that was masked by a custom dark grey trenchcoat. A mirage of colors collaging on her glasses however her sights were locked onto a figure that approached her.
Dressed in all black, fairly disheveled hair that came of as chic and a calm air that surrounded him, Steven stretched out his hand however she failed to respond. "So for how long have you been a government operative?" Her tone sharp as she bore her crimson eyes into his.
The aura around her felt foreign and vague, as if the lady that stood right in front of her wasn't the Crimson he once knew. "I've always been a government operative. A pair of eyes and ears for the elites to extract the secrets in the Dark Hold and you were another client on the list."
His tone was flat as he retracted his arm. "Follow me." He urged, turned his back on her and without waiting for an answer started walking. She followed him as they walked past the guards and mercenaries placed all over the perimeter, on full standby without casting a glance at the two.
Walking down the carpeted halls, Steve spoke up. "I see the retreat helped you." Crimson narrowed her eyes at the joke he shot at him. 'Retreat? I only rested for a couple of hours?' Steven let out a small laugh which was meant to irritate her and she knew it thus she played dumb and fell silent.
Stopping outside a grand room, Steven turned to face Crimson who seemed apathetic to be there. "Please don't make a scene Crimson." He urged, his tone stern however her apathy reigned. "Provided they don't annoy me, it should be beneficial for both of us. Them saving the world and all that and I walk away." She knew that these people would lock her up the moment they got what they wanted.
She wasn't that naive to believe that they would let her walk just like that but she had an advantage. She was a mutant and they were mortals however she couldn't unleash a bloodbath even if she wanted. She would be hunted down all over the country.
"How many psionic neuro-blockers are there?" Steven paused for a second. "Enough to drive you insane." And with that the two walked in. The reason as to why she asked that wasn't because she feared her abilities being cancelled but rather she couldn't sense them to begin with. Earlier she could sense them as a light headache would pester her but now she felt nothing.
'Is it because of that?' She mused as her eyes now landed on the figures that cast their curious beady eyes on her figure. She was sure that she carried out some of their contracts given some of her targets being political rivals of the people she saw. B
Her eyes landed on the figure farthest away from her, Senator Reynolds.
His grey hair a testament of his age, and behind him all kinds of security personnel stood like sentries. Not just behind him but all over were men waiting for orders to put her down. She could feel their blood, their heartbeats and their tension as she sat down. Steven took a seat not that far from the senator.
The air was dense, as if a single word would cause an avalanche before Reynolds broke the unnerving silence. "Miss Isabella, it's most definitely a pleasure to have you here." His face wearing a light smile however she could tell that something sinister lurked behind his facade.
"Please don't call me that. Address me as Crimson." Her tone flat as she sunk into her seat. Comfortable and lavish as she had anticipated. "My apologies, Crimson however let's skip past the introductions and get to the reason as to why you're here."
It wasn't just Reynolds but the rest of the people in the room ready to hear what was about to unfold. Of course there were no mutant in sight but she noticed another figure that tried to probe her. It was an agent sent by Darius to keep a close eye on her.
Clearing his throat, Reynolds started the conversation. "I'm sure you already know why we called you here Crimson. Your immunity to the Fracture Plague makes you an interesting individual. This world is on the brink of destruction and you can be a hero to save it." His tone heavy as his transparent eyes never left Crimson's figure.
'And here I thought that I was a monster. For him to take interest would mean that he wants to make an army of mutants to ward off those beasts at the fracture points. Even trying to recruit me as a "hero", adorable.' She thought as her eyes flashed briefly beneath her glasses.
"I'm intrigued by your offer of making me a hero however I'm sorry that I have to decline. If you do wish to know what made me immune to the plague then you'll have to track down a single individual. His name is Solon and no he's not dead." Steven gave a light sigh the moment he heard this.
"What is it agent Steven?" Reynolds asked noticing his frustration. "Sir, Solon was Crimson's target however he's dead. Fell from Five Stars Bliss Hotel." Crimson let out a laugh which agitated Steven. "You still think he's dead? I didn't expect the government to be this incompetent and fall for ruse as childish as that."
Reynolds narrowed his eyes upon hearing this. People "mysteriously" falling to their death was a common way for people to stage their own death. "Steven, have the matter looked into and gauge whether Solon is actually dead or not." Steven hesitated for a moment before accepting. "Yes Sir."
"That being all I'll take my leave." Raising to her feet, the guards in the room made a step which she noted. "What's wrong senator? Catch solon and have your cure for the Fracture Plague. It's that simple or do you not trust me?" Her tone playful as she sat back into her seat.
"It's not that we don't trust you, Crimson but we simply can't let you walk out of here so easily." Sensing the guards closing in, Crimson let out an amused chuckle. "Do you really think that harvesting my blood will give you a cure. You'll only be going around in circles." Her hands tucked into her coat as her eyes now shone, locked with the senator's.
Everyone could tell that she was on the verge of unleashing carnage however they mused that she was oblivious to the trap she was in. "Do you think that we hadn't made any preparations for your arrival, Isabella?" Pressing a button beneath his desk, he sat back, ready to see Crimson drop however he was met with a smile dangerous as his.
"Oh you clueless naive senator, I'm sure that you don't want any blood to spill over something so simple. However it would seem that you're a little too comfortable in your position." Mimicking a gun, she shot at one of the guards and to their surprise, he dropped dead.
A streak of blood trailed from her fingers. With that a scuffle ensued however she didn't bother moving from her seat.
*Splat*
The corpse blossomed into a beautiful yet deadly flower that shot out it's spores all over the room. As if controlling puppets, webs of blood shot all over the place. It's victims impaled and died while those seated pinned down by their own blood including the senator. The room came to a standstill with crimson never lifting a finger.
'What?! How is she immune to the psionic neuro-blockers?!' Not just Reynolds but the rest in the room thought about this. "What's wrong Reynolds? Not the outcome you saw." Gut retching gurgles could be heard come from Reynolds as his blood was siphoned out of his body through his mouth and formed a ball.
Like an executioner, she formed a great sword that dropped splitting Reynolds in two. The sight gory before letting the ball of blood still under her control shoot darts piercing skulls and flaying her victims. The process was quick and in a matter of minutes, only one person was left alive. Steven who was visibly shocked about what had happened.
He tried to run away however similar to Reynolds, Crimson manipulated his blood pinning him to his chair and watch the chaos unfold. "Are you going to kill me?" He asked however his tone was calm. "No, I've already given you what you wanted from me."
He gave a sigh of relief. "You do know what will happen when you walk out of that door, right?" She gave a nod as the pool of blood hovered. Every single drop of crimson from the corpses was siphoned into a blob before Crimson chose to condense it into a single drop of blood that she assimilated.
"You should leave this continent if you wish to survive Steven and tell Reynolds that what he's doing is delaying the inevitable." And with that she rose and walked out of the door. Steven adjusted his tie, letting out a heavy sigh and leaving the room as well. The supposed senator wasn't dead, only replaced with a double similar to the attendees.
Tuning into his wrist watch, he allowed Crimson to leave through the checkpoint as he made his way into the senator's office. Opening the laptop present, Reynolds image came.
