Evolution: Harbinger of Chaos

Chapter 11: Desperate Stand

Daniel's breath came in shallow, labored gasps as he braced himself against the tree trunk. Blood soaked his clothes, sticky and warm, and his entire body screamed in agony. Every movement felt like it might tear him apart, but he forced himself upright, clutching the rough bark for support.

The reindeer bellowed a low, guttural roar that reverberated through the forest like thunder. Its massive antlers gleamed with fresh blood as it raked them against the surrounding trees, tearing through trunks as though they were paper.

Daniel's lips curled into a trembling grimace, his teeth bared in defiance.

"I won't... die here," he whispered, his voice fragile but resolute.

His legs quivered as he pushed himself to stand, his back leaning heavily against the tree for balance.

"I will fight..."

The reindeer charged again, its hooves pounding the earth like war drums, closing the distance in seconds. Its crimson eyes burned with unrelenting fury, locking onto its prey with terrifying precision.

Daniel's hand reached for a sturdy branch nearby, clutching it tightly despite the fiery pain in his injured palm.

"Come on... come on!" he growled, bracing himself as the beast bore down on him.

At the last moment, Daniel let himself fall to the side, swinging the branch with every ounce of strength he had left. The antlers missed him by inches, but the improvised weapon struck true, shattering against the side of the reindeer's head. Splinters flew as the impact sent the beast stumbling, its massive frame crashing into the undergrowth.

But it recovered too quickly.

Daniel's heart sank. A branch wasn't enough. He needed something stronger—something that could end this nightmare. His chest heaved as his eyes darted around the clearing, searching desperately for a solution.

His gaze landed on his bag for a moment before he turned away, looking elsewhere.

Isn't there something else I can—

Daniel's eyes widened. There was something else that could directly hurt the reindeer, and it was in the bag!

His gaze fell on his bag again.

The multitool.

Daniel's breath hitched. It was a slim chance, surely not the most desirable, but it was all he had.

The reindeer charged again, its massive body barreling toward him with unstoppable force. Daniel scrambled to his feet, but his legs were trembling, unsteady.

As the beast closed the gap, it abruptly stopped, raising its muscular forelimbs into the air.

Daniel realized its intentions a moment too late.

The reindeer's hooves struck out like a sledgehammer, connecting with his right shoulder.

Pain exploded through Daniel's body as he was hurled through the air. The world became a disorienting blur of green and brown before his body struck the ground with a sickening thud.

For a moment, the forest was silent.

Daniel blinked, his vision swimming. He tried to move, but his limbs refused to obey. Every part of him ached, his mind struggling to process the overwhelming pain.

Then he saw it.

Or rather, he didn't.

His right arm was gone.

The sleeve of his shirt hung in tatters, drenched in blood that poured freely from the jagged stump at his shoulder. The sight should have horrified him, but his mind couldn't fully comprehend it.

"My... arm," he croaked, his voice hollow.

The reindeer let out another guttural roar, a sound of triumph that reverberated through the forest.

Daniel's gaze drifted to his bag, just a few feet away. Within it, he could see the metallic glint of the multitool.

He dragged his left arm forward, inch by agonizing inch, clawing at the dirt with his fingers. His vision blurred, but he forced himself to focus, his breath coming in shallow gasps.

"I don't... want to die," he whispered, tears streaming down his face.

His fingers finally reached the bag. With trembling fingers, he grabbed the multitool. The cold metal felt foreign in his grip, but he clung to it like a lifeline.

The reindeer snorted, lowering its head as it prepared to charge once more. Its hooves pawed the earth, its red eyes locked onto Daniel with predatory intent.

Daniel turned himself over, facing the beast. His chest heaved, blood and saliva dripping from his lips as he held the multitool.

"Fuck you!" He roared, his voice hoarse.

The reindeer barreled toward him, its massive form blotting out everything else.

Its antlers pierced his abdomen, but Daniel ignored the searing pain. With a guttural scream, he drove the blade of the multitool into the beast's glowing eye with a sickening squelch.

The beast screeched, its movements erratic as it thrashed in pain. Daniel pulled the blade out and drove it in again, this time with even greater force.

The reindeer bellowed in agony, swinging its head wildly, its antlers scraping against the trees as it thrashed more desperately.

Daniel gritted his teeth, his vision darkening. He pulled the blade free and drove it into the creature's eye one last time, twisting it with all the strength he had left just before he was flung aside, landing hard against a tree trunk.

Dazed and broken, he watched as the reindeer stumbled forward. Its momentum carried it into another tree, the impact shaking the forest. The beast let out one final cry before collapsing to the ground.

Silence.

Daniel lay on the forest floor, his body battered, broken, and mutilated. His chest rose and fell in shallow, labored breaths as he stared at the fallen beast. Blood polled around it, mingling with the gore-stained ground.

"I... fought..." he whispered, a faint smile tugging at his bloodied lips. "And I won..."

Tears streamed down his face, mixing with the dirt and blood.

"I... don't want... to die..." he murmured, his voice fading.

But he could feel it. He was at the last of his breaths.

Perhaps this was what those nightmares were? A premonition of such a bizarre and horrible death awaiting him?

"I... don't..." A mix of blood and saliva flowed out the corner of Daniel's lips.

As he gazed up at the canopy, the leaves and branches began to twist and contort again, forming strange symbols. They sharpened into focus, depicting a woman surrounded by stars. Daniel's fading vision followed the sequence of images:

The woman, now surrounded by twelve children, stood at the center of a celestial map. Twelve planets orbited them, pulsing with a soft, ethereal light. Innumerable stars floated around, as if curious at the sight.

The image blurred, then refocused: The woman was gone, however, four large stars now soared above the twelve worlds.

Daniel watched as the stars each split two pieces from their original whole, forming twelve smaller stars. These smaller stars floated into the worlds.

And then, a grand war unfolded before his eyes: countless armies of humans, giants, demi-humans, and monstrous creatures clashed in a sea of chaos. Daniel's dulling mind flickered as he beheld the sheer scale of the conflict.

At the forefront of the battle were the twelve children, facing off against the twelve stars.

Finally, a lone image crystallized: the twelve children, now robed figures battled a formless, insidiously dark entity in the sky above the twelve worlds.

Daniel's eyes locked onto the image. As his vision dimmed, he heard the words:

"YOU ARE DANIEL JASON, THE ONE FORESEEN BY FORTUNE AND FATE."

"YOU WILL WIELD THE POWER OF THE TWELVE, AND FIGHT THE INFECTION, AS HAS BEEN YOUR DESTINY THROUGHOUT TWELVE LIFETIMES."

The voice echoed through Daniel's mind, resonating deep within his soul.

His chest rose once more, then stilled. His eyes, frozen on the vision, slowly lost their luster. His thought processes slowed, memories flashing before his eyes:

His childhood, marked by unexplained nightmares.

His isolation, feeling like an outsider among his peers.

His confession and Angela's rejection.

The reindeer's attack, a catalyst for this moment.

Daniel's consciousness began to unravel, threads of reality snapping apart. His vision faded to black.

Yet, in the darkness, a spark remained.

A spark that would ignite a new journey.
