Chapter 15: Chapter 15: The Vine
"I was so scared! I didn't know the non-safe zone had a shrinking mechanism. I thought you were dead for a moment—it really scared me!"
Inside an abandoned shop, Tang Yingying patted her chest, still shaken.
Gu Shan glanced at Zhao Kuo, who was unharmed, and said, "Let's not gamble like this in the future. You only have one life."
"I know, but if I'm completely confident, it's not really a gamble," Zhao Kuo replied with a smile.
Suddenly, Zhao Kuo asked, "Brother Gu Shan, have you ever used a sniper rifle?"
Gu Shan was slightly taken aback but nodded. "I trained with one in the military, but I'm only a beginner."
"Wow, Brother Gu Shan is actually a sniper expert!" Tang Yingying's untimely flattery made Gu Shan scratch his head.
"It's not like that. Sniper rifles are highly specialized. Only soldiers with talent undergo dedicated sniper training. I've trained, but my skills are average. Without a high-powered scope, the probability of hitting a target a hundred meters away isn't great."
Gu Shan was right.
While movies and TV shows often depict naturally gifted snipers, accuracy with a sniper rifle actually requires extensive training and professional knowledge.
Moreover, in this dark environment, without night vision capabilities, the functionality of a sniper rifle would be severely limited.
After some thought, Zhao Kuo decided not to take out the sniper rifle he had confiscated.
It wasn't that he didn't trust Gu Shan, but rather that his own offensive methods were too limited. Having a sniper rifle might prove useful in certain situations.
Zhao Kuo changed the subject and asked, "Has the next safe zone refreshed? Where is it?"
Gu Shan shook his head. "No, the rules have changed. The next safe zone will only be revealed in the final minute."
"One minute… Lord Yole, you really have a twisted sense of humor," Zhao Kuo sighed helplessly.
With one minute to move and two minutes for the zone to shrink, players would have a maximum of three minutes to enter the safe zone.
If a fight broke out during those three minutes, both sides could be dragged down.
However, with good luck, one could step into the zone directly.
"What should we do now?" Tang Yingying, who never had any ideas of her own, simply played the fool with Zhao Kuo and Gu Shan around.
Zhao Kuo thought for a moment and said, "Let's take it one step at a time. After all, none of us are prophets. From now on, let's try to avoid fights and build up our strength."
"Agreed. We can continue exploring further in," Gu Shan suggested.
Zhao Kuo nodded and took the lead. With him at the core, the trio ventured deeper into the darkness.
As the safe zone shrank, battles became more frequent.
However, they were limited to gunfire or skill-based ambushes, with no direct close-quarters combat in sight.
Those who had made it this far were strong, and the strong tended to value their lives.
"Have you noticed? The number of monsters or supernatural entities has significantly decreased," Zhao Kuo suddenly remarked.
He had been paying attention to this since earlier.
In the first two zones, monsters or supernatural entities appeared frequently and were incredibly powerful, far beyond what players at this stage could handle.
But now, after walking through an entire block, the trio hadn't encountered a single monster.
"Isn't that a good thing? That hanged ghost scared me to death," Tang Yingying said.
If it hadn't been for Zhao Kuo showing up and using a talisman to drive the hanged ghost away, she and Gu Shan would have had no effective way to deal with it.
Zhao Kuo, however, shook his head. "I'm just afraid…"
Before he could finish, a piercing scream echoed from not far away, sounding especially tragic in the silent darkness.
"Let's go!" Without hesitation, Zhao Kuo grabbed Tang Yingying and ran back the way they had come. Gu Shan didn't need to be told—he was even faster than Zhao Kuo.
"Ah… wh-what is that?" Tang Yingying didn't react immediately, but she saw a vine glowing with a green light suddenly rise high in the darkness. At the tip of the vine was what seemed to be a corpse, skewered like a quail.
Zhao Kuo glanced back.
Sure enough, the reason the number of monsters or supernatural entities had decreased was because something even more terrifying existed.
Gu Shan frowned. "I feel like getting into the next safe zone is going to be difficult."
Zhao Kuo nodded. "It's fine. We'll take it one step at a time. Lord Yole wouldn't create a situation where death is certain—that would be pointless."
Although he didn't know the true intentions of Yole, the station agent, if Yole wanted to kill them, there was no need to design such a game.
"That vine seems to be chasing us!" Tang Yingying suddenly shrieked. "Let go, I can run on my own!"
Hearing this, Zhao Kuo immediately let go, and his speed increased significantly.
Tang Yingying also ran with all her might. She understood that this thing was far beyond their current ability to handle.
It wasn't even on the same level!
Dealing with a hanged ghost was already tough, let alone this ominous, menacing creature.
What bad luck… Zhao Kuo cursed inwardly.
He had started running the moment he sensed danger, yet he was still targeted.
Without looking back, Zhao Kuo fired two Lucky Magic Missiles, hoping to slow the vine down.
The missiles struck the vine, causing it to pause briefly, but it quickly resumed its pursuit, even speeding up.
At the same time, more and more vines extended from the darkness, beginning a bloody hunt.
"Split up!" Zhao Kuo said upon seeing this.
"Got it. Be careful!" Gu Shan had no objections. If the vine chased him, then it was just his bad luck.
Losing one was better than losing all three!
Gu Shan, with his military background, had the grit of a soldier.
Zhao Kuo ignored Tang Yingying and ran down another path.
Seeing this, Tang Yingying gritted her teeth and darted into an alley on the left.
It was a smart choice, but they all knew that if the strange vine chose them, it would mean certain death.
Zhao Kuo wasn't slow. As a Lucky Sorcerer, he had an advantage in speed compared to other classes, with a solid 20 points in speed.
But to his dismay, the vine was chasing him!
One out of three—how could he be so unlucky?
Zhao Kuo didn't run in a straight line but instead weaved through main roads and side streets.
However, the vine was fast, and it was getting closer and closer to Zhao Kuo.
Just then, Zhao Kuo suddenly stopped.
In front of him was a dead end, the towering wall making him clench his teeth in frustration.
It was too dark. Even with a flashlight, he couldn't see the wall from a distance!
There was no time to turn back now. Zhao Kuo took a deep breath, turned around, and faced the rapidly approaching green vine, a poisoned dagger in one hand and the Evil Revolver in the other.
"Go to hell!"
Zhao Kuo cursed and activated [Potential Focus] the moment the vine was about to strike him.
