Eternal Echoes: A Dance with Darkness

Chapter 10: Chapter Ten

“No… Only nightmares with my shadow man.”

Aiden's expression twisted when I referred to Lucien as 'my shadow man.' “It’s different every time…” he murmured, more to himself than to me. But I couldn't resist interrupting his train of thought.

"What do you mean it's different every time? What are you trying to say?" I felt my frustration growing. Aiden's words were becoming increasingly mysterious. Every question I asked only seemed to lead to more questions.

He gazed back at me with patience and warmth. "Don't worry about it now, my love," Aiden reassured me, pulling me closer. "Let's just savor the time we have together in this moment."

I found myself unable to resist Aiden's suggestion as he gently guided my chin towards his, drawing me in for a kiss. Despite any doubts I may have had, I was certain that this moment was meant to be; it just felt so right.

Aiden now lay atop me on my bed, his hands exploring every contour of my skin as our passionate embrace continued. The sensation of electricity surged through me with each touch, sending shivers down my spine. I found myself running my fingers through his hair, yearning to pull him closer. As our connection deepened, I felt myself losing control, breathless and overwhelmed by the intensity of his touch.

His hand lingered on my waist, then boldly moved up my shirt, tracing the curves he knew so well. A shiver ran through me as his fingers brushed my skin, and I couldn't suppress a soft moan when his lips found my neck. The world faded away, leaving only the intoxicating sensation of his touch.

All I wanted was more, to feel him closer, to lose myself in the moment. Logic faded, replaced by an inexplicable trust. He made my heart pound, my breath quicken, and I felt a connection that defied reason.

His hand descended, finding its way to the curve of my hip, eliciting another involuntary sound. As we lay there, wrapped in the heat of desire, he pulled away, his gaze intense.

"I've waited for this," he breathed, his voice husky with longing. "Searched for you for years." His eyes burned with a passion that mirrored my own. "I have to stop before I lose control."

I pouted playfully, a smile tugging at his lips.

He leaned in for a tender kiss, then rolled onto his side, our bodies intertwined. We lay there, lost in each other's eyes, the silence filled with unspoken promises.

Lost in his gaze, every question I had melted away. His eyes held a longing so deep, a love so pure, that nothing else mattered.

"I'm here," I whispered, yearning for his touch. "Your search is over." I shed my shirt, inviting him to take what he desired.

His eyes widened, a mix of shock and desire flashing across his face. I could feel his internal struggle, the battle between restraint and passion.

Yet, despite my teasing, he held back, content to simply hold me close through the night.

"This feeling... it's unlike anything I've ever experienced," I sighed, my voice soft. "It's as if our souls are intertwined."

Aiden's gaze held mine. "In my world, this is the mark of a true soulmate. A bond that transcends time and space."

*******

I awoke later, still enveloped in Aiden's embrace. My head was nestled against his chest, his arms securely wrapped around me. As I gazed up at him, a sense of peace washed over me. However, my attention was soon drawn to a peculiar glow emanating from my purse.

An orange light pulsated from where my purse lay. With a sense of curiosity, I rose from the bed and hastily put on my shirt. Retrieving my purse, I reached for the locket within. To my surprise, the unidentifiable blue gem within the locket was once again emitting an enchanting orange light.

"What on earth are you?" I whispered to myself, captivated by the necklace.

Aiden stirred in his sleep, causing me to quickly conceal the locket I held in my hand.

"What is that?" he asked in a gruff tone.

"It's nothing, just go back to sleep—" I began to respond, but he was already standing beside me, his gaze fixed on the locket.

"Where did you get this?" His voice took on a stern tone, demanding an explanation.

"Someone gave it to me," I replied sheepishly.

He snatched it from my hand, his fingers tracing the intricate design. "Who gave this to you?"

"Easton," I said, my voice barely a whisper.

A dark cloud settled over his face at the name. "Easton?" he repeated, his voice laced with a dangerous undertone. "I'm too late..." He turned away, his figure shrouded in shadows.

"What do you mean, 'too late'?" I asked, my voice trembling. "Where are you going? Aiden, please, what's wrong?" Tears welled up in my eyes, a mix of fear and confusion.

He whirled around, his eyes burning with intensity. "I won't be long, my love. I have something to attend to, someone to confront." He leaned in, his lips brushing mine. "Don't worry, I'll be back before you know it."

"But why are you so secretive? What's going on with Easton?" I demanded, my curiosity piqued.

He hesitated, his gaze distant. "Easton and I share a complicated history. He's not to be trusted."

"But I've known him for years!" I protested. "He's never done anything wrong."

A flicker of pain crossed his face. "You don't know the half of it," he said, his voice low. "There's more to Easton than meets the eye."

"I opened my mouth to respond, but the words caught in my throat. Aiden was right. I knew nothing about Easton. He was a shadow, a mystery. Even when I was in Sara's mind, he remained a closed book. “So how do you know him?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

He didn't answer, his gaze fixed on something distant.

“Aiden, please,” I pleaded, desperation creeping into my voice. “Tell me something. How do you know Easton? Why did you say you were too late?”

He sighed, a battle raging within him. “I knew him a long time ago. We were once the closest of friends.”

A chill ran down my spine. “What do you mean, ‘once’? What happened?”

He hesitated, his expression grim. “I can't explain it all now. I need to get rid of this locket first.”

“Why? What's so special about it?” I asked, my curiosity piqued.

He regarded me with a mixture of pity and warning. “It's a relic from a forgotten time, a time when dark forces threatened our world. It's connected to a power you don't fully understand, a power that could be dangerous if misused.”

My heart pounded in my chest. “What kind of power?”

He hesitated, then spoke in a hushed tone. “A power that could make you a target for those who seek to control the world.”

Fear gripped me. “What are you talking about? What do you mean?”

He sighed, his eyes filled with a profound sadness. “I can't explain it all now. But know this, Ember: I'll protect you, no matter what.”

I stumbled backward, my knees buckling beneath me. The revelation hit me like a ton of bricks. "This can't be real," I whispered, disbelief etched on my face.

"It's true, Ember," he said, his voice heavy with sorrow. "We've lived countless lifetimes together, but each time, you've met an untimely end, just before your twenty-first year."

A cold dread settled over me. "But... my birthday is in a few months."

Panic flashed in his eyes. "That's why I need to destroy this locket. I can't lose you again."

"Aiden, wait!" I cried, fear gripping my heart. "What does Lucien want with me?"

"He desires your power, Ember," he explained, his voice low. "You're a unique soul, capable of great good or great evil. He seeks to control you, to bend you to his will."

"But why me? Why not someone else?" I asked, confusion clouding my mind.

"Because you're the key, Ember. The key to unlocking ancient power. He's been watching you, waiting for the right moment to strike."

A shiver ran down my spine. "I don't understand."

"You will," he promised, his voice filled with determination. "I won't let him hurt you."

The room spun, a whirlwind of fear and confusion. My blood ran cold, my face drained of color. Aiden's voice was a distant murmur, a whisper lost in the cacophony of my racing thoughts. His touch, once comforting, now felt distant, unreal. I was trapped in a nightmare, a prisoner of my own mind.

Panic seized me, a relentless storm that threatened to consume me. I couldn't breathe, couldn't think. The world narrowed down to a single, terrifying thought: the shadow man was real.

Then, his lips, warm and insistent, broke through the chaos. A jolt of electricity, a surge of primal instinct. His kiss, passionate and demanding, pulled me back from the abyss. Slowly, the storm began to subside. My heart rate slowed, my breathing steadied. The nightmare receded, replaced by the comforting reality of his embrace.

His gaze held mine, concern etched into his features. "Are you okay, love?" he asked, his voice gentle.

I tried to catch my breath, my heart still pounding in my chest. "How did you do that?" I managed to whisper, my voice barely audible.

He smiled, a look of relief washing over his face. "It's a little trick I learned," he said, picking me up and carrying me to the bed. "We'll deal with your abilities later. Right now, you need to rest."

"Don't leave me," I pleaded, my voice growing weaker. "Please, stay with me."

He leaned down, his lips brushing mine. "I won't leave your side, my love. I promise."

The weight of sleep pulled at my eyelids, a relentless force that I couldn't resist. I fought to stay awake, to hold onto the fading light of consciousness, but my efforts were futile. As darkness enveloped me, I tried to form the words, to plead with Aiden to stay, to let me help. But my voice failed me, swallowed by the encroaching slumber. Was he somehow controlling my exhaustion, lulling me into a deep sleep? Lost in a haze of confusion, I succumbed to the darkness, leaving the unanswered questions hanging in the air.
