Chapter 171: You
Kayn floated his way down into the encampment and found a suitable spot hidden between a few tents to set up the Wanderer's Villa so that he could change. He really wished there was an easier way to switch clothing, but alas, there was no such thing that he knew of as of now.
He walked out from between the tents wearing attire similar to what the other researchers were wearing. He had to pass a few of the military people and other researchers while he was walking towards Dr Elaine, but most ignored him and others just gave him a simple nod.
Only the odd few that were actually paying enough attention noticed his odd eyes, but his ears were covered by his hair. However, they would only give him a good look before moving on about their own business.
He approached Dr Elaine from behind and focused in on her to see if she was talking to the researchers near her, but she only seemed to be mumbling to herself in English.
"Why disappear for a year and a half and then return while only targeting military sites? If they're as powerful as I suspect, why not distribute such an energy to benefit the world? Why not stop this war?"
Kayn was slightly amused by her rambling as it seemed she understood more about him than everyone else did as he still heard talk of some unknown power with unfathomable technology making the rounds in the camp.
Dr Elaine suddenly opened her eyes wide and stood up a little straighter as a soft accented voice from behind startled her.
"Perhaps they don't want to involve themselves with the dealings of those of this world? Perhaps they have a goal that has nothing to do with us?" Kayn spoke as Dr Elaine only turned her head around to look at who was speaking near the end of his questions.
She gave him a good long look before responding to him, "And who might you be?"
"Ah! My apologies, I'm Doctor Kayn Yvaris. I couldn't help but converse with you after hearing your theory that is opposed to what everyone else is saying." Kayn responded while holding out his hand for a handshake.
"Doctor Juliette Elaine, pleasure to meet you…Doct-Doctor Yvaris?!" Dr Elaine shouted in a start as she took a good look at his face once more.
"Do you know of me?" Kayn asked innocently as he was honestly perplexed where she would have heard of him from.
"Come with me, right now." Dr Elaine demanded and began walking away towards her own private tent. As she was within a military encampment, she didn't have a personal guard following her around everywhere to worry about.
Kayn scratched his head in confusion, but still followed along without complaints. Now he was curious as to why she was startled by his fake name and title.
Once they were inside the tent that was more of a plywood house covered with tarps, she locked the door and gestured for Kayn to sit opposite of her at a small table.
"So, it's you, isn't it?" Dr Elaine accused without wasting any time on small talk.
Kayn smirked inwardly as this woman really didn't beat around the bush. "I'm not positive what you're talking about Doctor. Could you elaborate?"
"Over two years ago, I was stationed at and researching at a temple belonging to the Greek god, Zeus. I was informed that a new scientist was going to be delivered to the area via boat, but that scientist never showed up.
"The driver of the boat stated that he was nearing the island when he suddenly blacked out. When he came to, the scientist on his boat was gone and he drifted quite far into the open sea. Curious about the scientist that vanished, I looked into them. Do you know what I found?" Dr Elaine asked in a rhetorical tone.
Kayn only gestured for her to continue rather than responding to her. "I found a picture of a man with white hair and crimson eyes named Doctor Kayn Yvaris, he was the one who had gone missing. Albino humans are quite rare, so I took the time to look into him as he seemed interesting.
"However, the information I found was more of a lack of information. For a scientific doctor, he had no publicly published research or even privately published research as I have access to look into those things. More digging and asking a friend to dig into his background, I discovered that everything was hacked into the implanted into the worldwide system. In other words, he's a fake.
"So, either he was changing his identity or came out of nowhere to begin with. Using a facial recognition software resulted in nothing as well. It was as if the good doctor didn't exist before he attempted to arrive at Zeus's temple.
"Then, the temple was finally accessible and the energy source I had been tracking vanished. As the sites that I was at continued to become accessible due to their energy vanishing, I started to suspect something or someone outside of our technology and knowledge, more and more.
"It occurred to me that just after the doctor's disappearance was when this all started. I kept my eye out at every research site, but I never saw anyone that matched his identification picture. That was until you arrived and stated your name.
"Your eyes are a bit different than the picture, but everything else looks exactly the same. So, I ask again, who are you?" Dr Elaine became stern with her tone as she questioned Kayn, but unfortunately he was distracted by something else she said.
"Back up, you said that the eyes are different?" Kayn asked instead.
"Yes, you both have crimson red eyes, but yours have golden accents while the picture's portrait do not." She replied in confusion as to why he was asking about that when she had directed accusations at him.
Instead of answering, and being more curious about his eyes now, Kayn snapped an ice mirror into existence in his hand and looked at his own reflection.
Each eye now had four small golden lines that crossed over the black ring in the four directions; up down, left, and right. Kayn couldn't help but think that this added to his charm as it was quite eye catching. He also knew that this had to have been a result of whatever Odin had done to him, he just hadn't looked in a mirror in a while.
Focusing back on the current situation, Kayn dismissed the ice mirror and smiled as he saw Dr Elaine sitting there with her jaw practically hitting the table.
"You're correct, I am that, Doctor Kayn Yvaris. Though, I'm not actually a doctor as that was all made up to make my initial travel around easier."
"Wha-What did you just do?!" Dr Elaine almost shouted but kept her voice down a little bit to not alert anyone outside of her tent.
"Oh this?" Kayn formed another ice mirror with a snap before smirking, "Magic!"
Dr Elaine frowned as saying magic was real was too far fetched in her opinion, but the evidence was right in front of her, though it could still be some kind of trick.
"You look doubtful, how about this then?" Kayn dispersed the mirror once more before pouring her a cup of water from thin air. Creating both the cup and water.
"I can do much more than that obviously, but this should suffice for now. I can tell your mind is churning and you would like to ask some questions, so please do ask." Kayn spoke amicably as he gestured for her to begin.
"I had my suspicions, but are you a god?" she asked with the most deadpan expression adorning her face.
"Haha, no I'm not a god, at least not in comparison to those whom the temples are dedicated to. However, for your purposes, yes, I'm basically a god. Think of me like your fictional character that runs around in tights with an S on his chest. I have all the power, but none of the weaknesses he does.
"Nothing Earth has can hurt me, and I could systematically destroy this planet's population if I really wanted to. I don't by the way, so don't worry. You asked yourself why I don't end the war. The answer is as I stated, I don't want to nor are this world's problems my own." Kayn stated as his finger tapped on the table.
"Then why are you interfering? Why take something that belongs to this world, the very thing that started this war? Why are you taking away the only thing keeping people safe?" Dr Elaine just couldn't understand why Kayn was taking the energy from the temples.
"Oh? This war started because of the temples?" Kayn returned her questions with one of his own. While that could be thought of as rude, Kayn's demeanor and power didn't seem to leave room for questioning his conversation ethics.
"Yes, they did. We know some kind of strange energy powers them, and then the UNTA found the Seed which made it so we were able to get some type of readings from the temples, until you took it that is." She glared at him, pinning the robbery of her device on him.
"I won't deny that it was me. I was actually quite impressed you managed to integrate this world's technology with the functionality of a core stone, it was quite impressive. But that device and the energy of the temples don't belong to this world and I will be taking them."
"How can you do that!? That energy source could provide us a way to power anything! It could lead to advancements this world has been dreaming about for decades now! We could completely get rid of using polluting fuel sources and solve Earth's problems!" Dr Elaine accused.
"You said so yourself, this war started because the Earth's powers are greedy for it. They want to use and weaponize it so that they can control everyone else. Mana, or what you are calling this new energy source, is a beautiful thing with infinite possibilities.
"I may be idealistic as even where I am from, it is used for war, but I can prevent that from happening here, so I might as well. It is also leading me towards my own goals, so I will be taking everything."
"But!" Dr Elaine started to argue, but realized that he was right. Without the energy present, the leaders of the world would have no reason to be fighting each other. The only issue would be showing them the energy was gone and that they should return to peaceful times.
"Fine, but since you're basically a god, why don't you go play one? If you show up every country will crumble one after the other under your power, you mitigated one of the strongest nuclear weapons known to man after all."
"While that may be true, I've also been warned in more subtle words about interfering with this world's politics. I don't want to die, so I'll continue doing what I must and if I just so happen to indirectly stop the war, then good." Kayn replied.
"Then what is your goal in taking this resource from Earth?" Dr Eline asked.
"Home."
