Empire Destruction: Rise of the Forgotten Elements

Chapter 4: Chapter 4: The Awakening

Eryon awoke to the sound of crackling fire and the scent of herbs wafting through the air. His body ached, every muscle screaming in protest as he tried to sit up. A soft, warm light bathed the small clearing they were in. Nearby, Tia and Lorin were huddled together, fast asleep under a blanket. Across the fire, the woman who had saved them—Althea—was seated on a fallen log, her staff resting against her shoulder.

"You're awake," she said without turning, her voice calm but sharp as a blade.

Eryon groaned, clutching his side. "Where… where are we?"

"A safe place for now," Althea replied, her eyes scanning the darkened forest. "Kael won't follow us here. Not immediately, at least."

The name sent a chill down Eryon's spine. "Who is he? And why is he after me?"

Althea finally turned to face him, her silver hair catching the firelight. Her gaze was piercing, and Eryon felt as though she was looking straight into his soul. "Kael is a Hunter of the Void—a servant of the forces that caused the Voidfall. He hunts those who've been touched by the shards."

"The shards," Eryon repeated, his heart pounding. "You mean the piece of stone I found in the forest? That's what this is all about?"

Althea nodded. "The shard you touched is no ordinary stone. It's a fragment of the Void itself, a remnant of the power that shattered the balance of this world. When you touched it, you became a vessel for that power."

Eryon's mind raced. The visions, the strange energy coursing through him—it all began to make a terrible kind of sense. "So… I'm cursed?"

"Not cursed," Althea said, her tone firm. "Chosen. The Voidfall didn't just break the world; it broke the natural order. The shards seek out those who can restore that balance—or destroy it. Which path you take is up to you."

Eryon stared at the fire, the weight of her words pressing down on him. He had always dreamed of adventure, of being someone important. But this… this was too much.

"And what about Kael?" he asked. "Why does he want the shard?"

Althea's expression darkened. "The Hunters serve the Void. They seek to gather the shards and use their power to plunge the world into eternal chaos. If Kael takes the shard from you, he'll kill you without hesitation."

A lump formed in Eryon's throat. "So what do I do? I'm no warrior. I barely survived that thing he sent after us."

"You learn," Althea said simply. "The power of the shard is within you now, but it's raw and untamed. If you don't master it, it will consume you."

"Master it?" Eryon looked at her incredulously. "How am I supposed to do that?"

Althea stood, her staff glowing faintly in the dim light. "There's a place—a sanctuary hidden deep within the mountains. The Sentinels who guard it can teach you to control your power. But the journey is long and dangerous, and Kael won't stop hunting you."

Eryon glanced at Tia and Lorin, their faces peaceful in sleep. "And what about them? They didn't ask for any of this."

"They're part of this now," Althea said. "The boy, Lorin—there's something special about him. I can't say what yet, but the Void touched him too. As for the girl…" She paused, her gaze softening. "She has a strong spirit. She'll be safer with us than on her own."

Eryon's head throbbed, the weight of his newfound responsibility threatening to crush him. He had wanted to escape the monotony of village life, but he had never imagined this. "Why me?" he whispered, more to himself than to Althea.

"Because you're stronger than you think," Althea said, her voice gentle. "And because the world needs you, whether you believe it or not."

The next morning, they set out before sunrise. Althea led the way, her staff glowing faintly to light their path. Eryon followed closely, with Tia and Lorin walking hand in hand behind him. The forest was eerily quiet, the only sounds their footsteps and the occasional rustle of leaves.

"Where are we going?" Tia asked, her voice breaking the silence.

"To the mountain sanctuary," Althea replied without turning. "It's the only place where we'll find answers—and safety."

"Safety," Tia muttered, glancing nervously at the shadows. "That's starting to feel like a fairy tale."

Eryon couldn't blame her. The events of the past two days felt like a nightmare he couldn't wake from. But he couldn't let his fear show, not in front of Tia and Lorin. They were depending on him, and for their sake, he had to keep moving.

As the day wore on, the terrain grew rougher. The forest thinned, giving way to rocky hills and jagged cliffs. The air grew colder, and the wind carried a faint, mournful howl.

"We're entering the Wailing Hills," Althea said, her tone grave.

"Why do they call it that?" Lorin asked, his voice trembling.

"Because of the wind," Althea said. "But also because of the spirits that linger here."

"Spirits?" Tia echoed, her eyes wide.

"Restless souls," Althea explained. "They won't harm us unless we disturb them. Stay close and keep quiet."

The group moved cautiously, their footsteps echoing against the rocky ground. As the sun dipped below the horizon, a thick fog rolled in, shrouding the hills in an eerie, white haze.

Eryon felt a shiver run down his spine. The fog seemed to whisper, faint voices that he couldn't quite make out. He tightened his grip on his sword, his eyes darting to every shadow.

Suddenly, a figure emerged from the mist—a tall, cloaked figure standing motionless in their path.

"Who's there?" Althea demanded, raising her staff.

The figure didn't respond. Instead, it raised a hand, and the mist seemed to ripple around it.

Eryon's heart pounded. "What is it?" he whispered.

"A wraith," Althea said grimly. "Stay back."

The wraith glided forward, its movements slow and deliberate. Its face was hidden beneath its hood, but a faint, ghostly light glowed where its eyes should have been.

Althea stepped forward, her staff glowing brighter. "Leave this place, spirit. You have no power here."

The wraith paused, as if considering her words. Then, with a sudden, inhuman shriek, it lunged.

Althea met the attack head-on, her staff clashing with the wraith's spectral claws. The air crackled with energy as the two forces collided.

"Go!" Althea shouted to the others. "Get to the other side of the hills!"

Eryon hesitated, torn between fleeing and helping her. But another wraith appeared in the fog, and then another, their ghostly forms closing in.

"Tia, Lorin, run!" he shouted, pushing them forward.

The three of them sprinted through the mist, their hearts pounding. The wraiths gave chase, their shrieks echoing in the night. Eryon swung his sword wildly, the blade passing harmlessly through the nearest wraith.

"Keep going!" he yelled, forcing himself to move faster.

Ahead, the fog began to thin, and the faint outline of a rocky outcrop came into view.

"We're almost there!" Tia cried, her voice filled with desperation.

But before they could reach it, a wraith appeared directly in their path. Eryon skidded to a halt, raising his sword. The wraith loomed over him, its glowing eyes burning with malice.

"Leave him alone!" Tia screamed, grabbing a branch and swinging it at the wraith.

To Eryon's surprise, the wraith recoiled, its form flickering as the branch struck it.

"Wood," he realized. "It can hurt them!"

Snatching a branch from the ground, he swung at the wraith with all his strength. The creature let out a piercing wail before dissolving into mist.

Eryon turned to the others. "Find branches! We can fight them!"

They scrambled to arm themselves, and together, they drove back the remaining wraiths.

When the last one disappeared, the mist began to lift, revealing the jagged peaks of the mountains ahead.

Althea appeared moments later, her staff glowing faintly. She looked exhausted but unharmed.

"You did well," she said, her voice steady despite her obvious fatigue.

Eryon nodded, his chest heaving. For the first time since the Voidfall, he felt a glimmer of hope. They had survived—and they were one step closer to the answers they sought.
