ECHOES OF THE VOID

Chapter 14: The Price of Knowledge(ii)

The air was thick with the stillness that followed their triumphant fight, as if the entire universe had been ensnared in the conflagration. The charred ground and broken bones of the beasts that had endangered their lives now marked the decaying clearing that had once been so full of life. As a continual reminder of the energy they had just resisted, a gentle hum was audible through the earth under them.

At the very center, Kael stopped still, his dark gaze sweeping across the wreckage. Even though he was physically exhausted from the fight, his insatiable hunger for knowledge kept him going. There was a new, more vibrant quality to the force he had released—the Void, the Nothingness. The energy wave that passed through him increased his confusion. He felt a power within him, but what exactly was it? How much further could he test its boundaries? What would be the cost to him if he were granted such power?

Accompanying him, Selene meticulously wiped her blade. She glanced from the debris to Kael and finally to the horizon with her ever-vigilant silver eyes. There was an air of unease about her, even if she seemed composed to Kael. Though the conflict had come to a close, the inquiries it prompted were far from over.

"Kael," she murmured, her voice downcast from her normal volume. "The beings we battled before are more than simply monsters. These are remnants, echoes of something that is far older. These items are completely unnecessary.

When Kael looked across at her, he wrinkled his brow. Is that an echo? "Of what?" he said, his tone incisive yet hinting at intrigue.

There was a brief pause as her silver eyes diverted from his, but she swiftly brought them back to meet his. These artifacts are the result of a conflict that predates even the Primordials. The origins of the Void are associated with certain items. The weight of her profound remarks hung heavy in the air.

The data was processed by Kael. Could it be an epic battle between forces that existed before the Big Bang? A chill ran down his spine at the thought, but it only served to strengthen his will to comprehend. "So, are these echoes trying to thwart me?" he said, his thoughts already racing.

"No," she whispered. They aren't here to impede your progress. They're here to cause something unintended.

Kael remained unfazed as his heart rate increased. "Explain it to me." In the midst of all the mayhem, his mind raced with questions, but he knew Selene wouldn't answer with a riddle. Regardless of its nature, this was crucial.

A low-volume tremor shook the earth before she could answer. Instinctively, Kael drew on the power of the Void that remained inside him as his pupils constricted. Something old and inexorable was churning beneath the soil, and he could feel it.

Standing nervously at his side, Selene's silver eyes widened with recognition. "It's here," she whispered softly to herself.

Out of nowhere, the earth parted, as if ripped by an invisible hand. Kael recoiled involuntarily, his thoughts rushing and his Void power exploding in reaction. Something towering and sinister, enveloped in a spectral veil of shadows, started to emerge from the crack. As it vacillated between worlds, its shape was unclear.

The form materialized as a surge of energy coursed through the atmosphere, its pale, supernatural eyes illuminating the scene. Its presence caused the air around it to distort and sag. Upon realizing that this was not a living being, Kael's heart pounded in his chest. It was a creature far more ancient than life. Being from the void. He was bound by the powers he had been feeling growing inside him.

Like the hushed utterances of an ancient deity, the monster's voice resounded with a mix of majesty and gentleness. It said the name "Kael Voidbreaker" with an eerie, bone-chilling vibrato. You are being drawn to the Void. You, Kael, will guide us to the return of night.

The words seemed to echo in Kael's spirit, as if the Void were communicating with him personally. A chilling, stifling aura enveloped him, and for an instant, he thought he was being swallowed whole by the boundless void. His heart was pounding as the monstrous eye met his. There was an air of familiarity, as if everything had been planned from the beginning.

A warning edge crept into Selene's voice as she broke the tension. Under her breath, she muttered, her eyes darting from the monster to Kael. Acquiring knowledge comes at a cost. And the cost is this... this.

The creature's words sent a shockwave through Kael, causing him to freeze momentarily. Everything was overwhelming and difficult to process at once. Could a primordial entity foresee an imminent catastrophe amidst the void and Nothingness? Everything was too interdependent.

As it advanced, the monster's shape hardened, and its smothering presence intensified. With a protective shield of Void power flowing about him, Kael cautiously stepped back. Despite his strength, he felt helpless in the face of the insurmountable force that was pressing in on him from every direction.

"I desire solely to understand the Void," Kael said, his voice composed yet unwavering, belying the inward crisis he was experiencing. "What exactly are you hoping to get out of me?"

A wicked grin crept across the monster's face as its eyes grew more luminous. Power is not what I desire, Kael Voidbreaker. Can you master the Void and face it? Are you able to exert control over the entity tasked with erasing everything?

She swallowed forcefully. He was familiar with the cautions, but this? It was different this time. His heart sank like a stone under the weight of the monster's words.

Selene advanced toward Kael, her glimmering silver eyes betraying an indecipherable message. She cautioned against paying attention to it. Space isn't the only thing the Void eats; it eats everything. It purges everything, including lives, memories, and potentially even your soul. Embracing it to its fullest extent will change you forever.

Kael, speaking in a barely audible but resolute tone, cocked his head to look at her. I've started already. Now I'm not going to stop.

Deep and resonant, the creature's voice resonated once again. Then get yourself ready. Once you claim the Void, there is no turning back. Your arrival heralds a new era. You can be sure that the end will arrive, Kael. It is going to flow out of you.

A chilling breeze whipped over the meadow, as if the Void were rumbling, its power encircling Kael. He felt his heart race as the sound of the creature's voice grew increasingly audible. This evil beckoned to him, urged him to give in to its grip and become one with it.

With an unfaltering stare and an overwhelming sense of power, Kael remained steadfast. He had made this decision. In spite of everything.

"I refuse to be used as a pawn," Kael murmured, his voice becoming louder as his determination became stronger. I shall command the emptiness. However, I refuse to let it dominate me.

A deep chuckle rumbled in the creature's breast as it cocked its head. "I understand. It won't be long before the price is seen, Kael Voidbreaker. Nothing escapes the Void's grasp.

The weight of the figure's words sank further into Kael's spirit as it faded back into the shadows. Kael had only just started to grasp the dreadful cost of knowledge, which was always greater than anybody could have imagined.

Selene spoke in a gentle yet forceful manner. Please, come. We must descend from this vantage point. Even if the Void is quiet right now, it will come back soon.

Even though Kael nodded, the creature's foreboding remarks continued to trouble him. Even though he had already embraced the power, the reality was finally starting to hit him. No amount of sacrifice could ever sway him off the road he had already set out on.

With each step into the uncharted territory, Kael's resolve to conquer the Void grew stronger. For any amount.
