Chapter 8: CHAPTER 8: Moments of Peace
The morning sun filled the Yankai headquarters with warm light, setting a calm tone for the day. It was a rare peaceful day with no missions or threats ahead. The members of Yankai took this opportunity to relax, train, and bond.
Unmei went to the training room first, excited to try out new techniques. When he arrived, he saw Aoi and Michael already sparring. Aoi moved gracefully, controlling bursts of water, fire, and wind. Michael used his superhuman speed to dodge her attacks, wearing a playful smirk.
"Mind if I join?" Unmei called as he stretched.
Aoi smiled warmly. "Of course! Let's see if you can keep up!"
Soon, the three of them were deeply engaged in a lively match, filled with laughter and friendly banter. Daichi watched from the side and smiled, pleased to see Unmei becoming a key part of their team.
In the common area, Mamoru sat quietly and read a book. He seemed more relaxed than usual. Kazu sat down next to him with his usual big grin and tried to spark a conversation.
"Hey, Mamoru! Would you like to play a game of cards?" Kazu asked, pulling out a deck with a mischievous look.
Mamoru raised an eyebrow but eventually agreed. They soon became engaged in a friendly yet competitive game. Kazu's energetic reactions contrasted with Mamoru's calm demeanor, but they both enjoyed spending time together. A faint smile even appeared on Mamoru's face.
Meanwhile, Daichi prepared a small meal in the kitchen, humming to himself as he cooked a simple snack for everyone. He cared for the team, knowing a good meal can lift spirits. As he set the plates down in the common area, Fukaime and Iris joined him, thanking him for the snacks. They started a light conversation. Iris's natural charm got Fukaime talking about her recent idol concerts and her love for performing.
Shiro watched Unmei's sparring match from a distance. Although he didn't join in, he smiled softly as he saw Unmei's joy and energy. He couldn't help but feel drawn to Unmei's warmth, which was slowly chipping away at his icy exterior.
By late afternoon, everyone had gathered outside under a large tree in the garden for an impromptu picnic. Daichi had brought out snacks, Kazu was cracking jokes that even made Mamoru chuckle, and Fukaime led a short sing-along. The entire team, usually so focused and intense, allowed themselves a day of simple joy, finding comfort in the bonds they had formed.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the garden, Atama Kaku walked out to join them. She paused for a moment, watching her team with a faint smile. Her normally composed expression softened as she took in the sight of her members laughing, teasing, and enjoying each other's company.
However, just as she began to relax, her communicator buzzed with a new notification. The display flashed urgently, detailing a recent Yokai attack on the outskirts of the city. Her face turned serious, and the peaceful atmosphere shifted as she absorbed the gravity of the message.
Clearing her throat, she spoke up, her voice calm yet commanding. "Everyone, we've received word of a Yokai attack. Details are limited, but it appears to be a serious threat. We'll prepare tonight and move out first thing tomorrow."
The cheerful chatter died down, replaced by determined expressions as the team processed her words. Each one nodded in silent agreement, mentally preparing themselves for the mission ahead.
As they dispersed to gather their gear and finalize their plans, the sun finally set, leaving the Yankai team in the dim light of evening. The day had provided them a brief reprieve—a chance to strengthen their bonds and remember the importance of their friendships. But tomorrow, they would be back on the battlefield, ready to face whatever challenges awaited them.
