Chapter 2: First night
Slowly, you walk and start entering between the houses of the Slums. There's no silence as all is only the sound of growls everywhere, some closer, some more far away.
You continue walking, and with the help of your flashlight in the vest, you can see through the night, but is not yet nighttime, as is still getting darker.
After a moment, you hear some growls very near in front of you, and when continue walking, you pass to a street of the Slums, and at your right, you encounter a Viral, that almost instantly runs at you when notices you.
You, without any idea, just cover yourself. Your vest is strong enough to cover you, and the Viral only reaches to deal some scratches as best in your vest, but the growls the Viral, were a clear call for more Virals to arrive.
You start hearing in the distance, a group of growls, more Virals were already coming, so because the training given by GRE, you start boxing up with punches, stunning and striking down the Viral with ease.
After few seconds later of beating up the Viral, the growls are almost at your side, so you retreat slowly, but facing from where they could arrive. Quickly, from both sides, left and right, of the very tiny street you are, Virals start trying to overwhelm you, but make each other have no space to dodge, making you capable of strike each punch successfully at each of them, until slowly, less remain, but still, even when they dodge some times, you reach to beat them up.
You remain still, but you hear nothing more. No more Virals planning to arrive at you, or at least now. And after some observation on the bodies of the Virals, you then decide to loot them, after all, for you, are zombies, and in each zombie game, loot dead bodies is completely normal, and after your training, you learnt from GRE to use everything in your favor, despite whatever was, it must have an use better for you, than to a dead corpse.
After some search over the bodies, you found nothing much, or even barely anything useful, except 44₺1. You observe the money, is strange to you, but you still save it in your pockets. You unknow about the culture of Harran, so you unknow almost everything, including what value could anything have, apart if is useful or not.
You continue walking, now, more focused in loot for your survival, as now as you have confirmed is what only matters, you have set up your mind for the survival training GRE gave you in emergency cases.
After you search in the houses, you couldn't find anything useful, except a variety of things, but as you unknow for what could be, and neither smoke, you let everything where is it, as has no value for you, neither any utility. And so, you continue wandering around the streets and the houses, finding very low things, and all of them having no use for your point of view, so you remain continuing your way.
You start despair, as after how much you're enjoying the show down of your own superiority and strength over the zombies on your way, all the loot you find, as despite be very scarce and low, it has no value at all, neither any utility.
In your way, you punch out of your way each Biter you find with ease, before they could even touch you, despite their attempts to catch you, for when they get up, you're already too far from them.
After a moment, you're already used to hear growling all over your around, but then, you stop at a new sound starts sounding in your vest. The GPS tracker started sounding, but not only called your attention, as near in front of you, there was a Volatile minding it's own things, eating a corpse, but when you look in front of you because heard an intense growl so near of you, you see the Volatile already jumped up to you, and you have only time in reacting with your arms rising them in the attempt to block.
The Volatile reaches you, and you barely remain standing in your feet, by taking a step back. You try to hold it's hands, trying to protect yourself from the Volatile, but it then started trying to bite you. The mouth the Volatile has, makes you feel disgusted, but what makes you nervous, is the strength is showing.
You see the Volatile able to can have the same strength as you, making you think if any other comes you would be in real danger, but obviously, growls in the distance, similar to the one of the Volatile. In your head you think you're done for, but if you're going to fall, will be by how you were trained, and for what you were trained for.
You in a sudden, kick the Volatile, but quickly, without dropping the grip on it's hands, you start running after turning around, and then enter inside a near house, and crash it against one of the walls inside the house.
The Volatile quickly tries to attack you, but the sudden run dragging it, makes it fall, and unable to get up. Once is pushes hardly against the wall inside the house, you start beating it up in the torso first, giving your all in each blow, making the Volatile get stunned for an instant after each hit, and tremble.
Quickly, you hear more growls of Volatiles getting closer, so you push your left arm against it's neck, down of it's mouth, and with a strong grip, you tear a rib from it. After stopping punching it, it quickly recovers and tries to attack you, reaching your shoulder of your left arm as much, before you start piercing it through it's right eye.
The Volatile stops hitting you, and slowly becomes only attempts, where slowly stop as is slowly dies, but you stop stabbing it's right eye to look back, seeing other Volatiles growling intensely at you as they found you.
You look at the Volatile you almost killed, but then, you barely dodge, when it throws a drop of green acid from it's mouth, before dying. The drop almost touches you, but reaches the other Volatiles, who dodge it much more easily.
In a quick panic instant, you grab the body of the Volatile now died, and with a quick turn, you throw it against the others, but the other Volatiles dodge it with ease.
The situation goes instantly against you, as you're not only outnumbered, by surpassed, as only one of them was capable of making you struggle, and fighting multiple of them was a wish death, but luckily, inside the house, the Volatiles were unable to strike all together, forcing them to have to fight one on one with turns.
You prepare quickly with little boxer jumps, and with hand closed and arms raised firmly up, with a pose like a professional boxer. In quick moment, the fight starts, you dodge each swing, or block it with the help of your vest, and launch punches successfully, even counter, but with precise hits and caution for the mouth, and not hitting by accident any rib, in case to pierce your own hand in the process.
The Volatiles, despite their strength and endurance, in a one on one, you're with the upper hand, having the advantage and superiority, but slowly get tired more and more, while they are a bunch of Volatiles, they don't get tired, and even though, they are four against you.
Slowly, dodging is getting harder, as not only you have to dodge or counter the Volatile attacks you're fighting at the moment, but the acid drops the back Volatiles throw at you. But slowly, you start feeling a flame consuming your skin all over your body, a flame not of determination as you're used to, a flame that is burning you and consumes you, damaging you mentally slowly, as you see your focus becoming more deep in the target is in front of you, and your punches slowly go harder, and slightly faster in being launched, and more aggressively, and less like a boxer.
You start to see red lines appear from the sides of your view, and the sides of your view becoming slightly red, while you can start hearing your breath stop from your nose and be with your mouth, while also start hearing yourself growling.
After this, you quickly start overwhelming the Volatiles that try to kill you, not only taking advantage or the upper hand, but the table itself on your favor. Quickly, one by one, the Volatiles fall one behind another, until the group is down, and cannot get up, but unable to think, you start obliterating their heads, finishing them off.
After finishing them, slowly, more Volatiles start to reach, but you quickly obliterate each Volatile that reaches you, until after a moment, slowly, less and less arrive. Finally, you can have your break after killing around 12 Volatiles. But after start catching your breath, you start twitching, while your hand close even harder. You feel an intense pain in you, along the burning consumption covering you and your mind, but try to remain calm, but can't control your body, as you see your arms twitch, in a desperate desire and will for continue obliterating.
You try to calm yourself, and slowly, you manage to do so, after a hard effort in self peace. You look around, and see the Volatiles, none of them with a each anymore, only split up or shattered.
You sit against a wall inside the house, and you move up the sleeves of your vest, and with the help of the flashlight, you light to see your arms, and you see your veins completely red, completely different as how they were.
After moving your sleeves back, and saving your flashlight, you go back to where the first Volatile was, as the beeping continues. You check the area, and see a red box of GRE, when you open it, you see two blue crates, and three white boxes for medical supplies.
You check each crate, but you have no idea of what is each crate, but as being of medical stuff, you save the five crates inside your bag. You have now less space left in your backpack, but still for more supplies like this, maybe for few more crates.
You continue your way, easily countering any Biter than runs towards you. In your way, you suddenly encounter a base, where when you moved closer as your attention is called by the so high use of UV purple light, a guard instantly noticed you, and aimed at you.
Guard: "Stop right there! Who are you?"
You turn to look, and look at the guard. For a moment, you remain silent, with your arms down.
-"Marco "Fortaleza" Sanchez."
The guard looks at you, intrigued and curious with your name, but doesn't question it, and decides to go with other question while shakes it's head.
Guard: "Why are you here in the middle of the night?"
-"Searching supplies."
Guard: "Are you a nightrunner?"
-"I don't know. No?"
Guard: "What do you mean "no?"? Is simple, yes or no."
-"I mean I don't know. I woke up in the tower, then met a random called Brecken, and then got out of the tower to explore. And all with headache."
Guard: "Oh, so you met Brecken? He is the leader of the nightrunners. You really don't know anything about them?"
-"No, nothing at all."
Guard: "Well, they sacrifice themselves to collect all the supplies they can, no matter the risk, but they feel superior to others, and act questionable."
-"I think I don't want to find out your definition of questionable. But yes, why so much purple light?"
Guard: "Is just the first line of defense against Volatiles. The infecteds are weak to the UV light, to the point they can die to it."
-"Wow, really? I guess their skins became more photosensitive?"
Guard: "I'm not a medic, neither know anything, but I think so. Also, did you already met Rahim?"
-"Rahim? No, who is Rahim?"
Guard: "Oh, then better get ready. Is not a bad guy, but can be annoying in most of the times. Is a good boy, but yet young, and acts as is even more younger. Is very impulsive with things, and enjoys taking the lead in all the situations if can."
-"A teenager?"
Guard: "You could classify him as he acts like one, yeah."
-"Alright, good night."
With nothing more, you start walking to your right, continuing your way ahead.
Guard: "Alright, good night, and good luck."
The guard yells at you while you continue your way. After a moment, you check your watch, and see the hour, and other information as your BPM1, the date, your temperature, and even a digital compass to guide yourself. You see it's 05:27 am, so you look up, but still night, so you decide in finding any other GRE box of supplies before morning.
The time passes, and starts becoming morning, while you finally find another GRE box. With complications, even with the help of the GPS tracker, but luckily, is also being displayed in your watch. You open the box, and are three blue crates, and two white. Still without knowledge of what is each crate, you pick the five crates, and almost not have space for all of them, so your backpack starts being forced, but it's made of reinforced carbon fiber, so it expands slightly to shape.
After you look up, you see the sunshine, as the morning starts, and then, you turn around and go back to the Tower. After a way long walk, and very tiring one, that took around an hour for sure, you look at your watch, and see it's 09:43 am, while catch your breath.
After a minute of catching your breath, you enter inside the Tower, and ask for help for do the jump to get up. The guards look at you, curious, but then they decide to help you, and so, you manage to get up, and inside the Tower.
You look around the first floor, but Crane isn't there. You continue searching, and even ask the guards that helped you just a moment before, and they tell you that Crane went outside. Surprised with anger, you ask the guards about the location of Brecken, and they tell you the floor.
You walk through the first floor in search of the elevator, and then get in. After a moment going up, you take a deep breath as the elevator takes you to higher floors of the Tower.
After some walk trying to find Brecken, you needed to ask people where is Brecken once again, and they tell you what room is, so you finally manage to reach where Brecken is. You see a big room, with Brecken and Lena together, as Lena is checking the head of Brecken, while Brecken is against a table at your right.
You knock slightly the doors, and they notice you. Lena stops for a moment, and then grabs her medkit, and leaves the room, and then you turn to look at Brecken, who is looking at you.
Brecken: "How it went the night? You seem great. I'm surprised you managed to go through all the night without dying. Do you need anything?"
-"Yes, actually, I need to know something important."
Brecken: "Of course, what is it?"
-"Why is Crane outside the Tower, when I told you before leaving in the night, to tell him as I wanted to talk with him in the morning?"
Brecken: "Look, don't get irritated, okay? I told him, he waited for a short moment, and then left for continue obtaining all the supplies he could get, you can talk with him in other moment."
Furious, you instantly close your hands with high strength, and get to the table. At in a quick move, you get your backpack, open it, and let everything fall over the table. The fall is small, so everything remains untouched.
Brecken looks at you surprised, impressed, shocked, and speechless, as after a short moment, he then starts walking near the table, and grabs the blue crates, opening them, and checking the inside.
Brecken: "Did you got all of this by yourself in the night?"
-"Yes, from red crates of the GRE directly. I though you said Antizin was scarce. Well, I see quite a lot of Antizin boxes over here."
Brecken: "You got five boxes of Antizin, impressive. This is a huge push to remain surviving for longer."
-"What? Five? You mean the blue ones are of Antizin? Then... For what are the white ones?"
Brecken: "Oh, you just grabbed them all without knowing?" Then starts laughing. "The white ones are basic medical supplies, very useful too, but we need more Antizin than first aid supplies. But don't worry, you did a huge help today to everyone in the Tower."
-"Great, now, call Crane however you can, and make him come instantly."
Brecken: "Alright, I'll contact with Kyle and see if he can come right now. You can wait with me here, and while he comes, I can tell you about some things."
-"Alright, very well then."
