Dungeon Nexus: Rise of the Silent Walker

Chapter 9: Chapter 9: The Descent into Shadows

The staircase that appeared after Jiho defeated the shadow guardian was unnaturally pristine, its surface smooth and untouched by the decay of the mall above. It spiraled downward into a void of silence, as if sound itself had been swallowed. Jiho hesitated for only a moment before stepping forward, the system chiming softly.

New Nexus Depth Detected: Subterranean Node Level 1.

Warning: Nexus Energy Levels Increasing.

The air grew colder as Jiho descended, his footsteps echoing faintly against the polished stone. He remained alert, one hand resting on the hilt of his dagger, the other trailing against the wall to sense any distortions in the space.

"Subterranean nodes," Jiho muttered to himself. "If the Nexus keeps going this deep, we're looking at something bigger than standard dungeons."

He wasn't wrong. Most dungeons were unstable dimensional tears, localized and eventually collapsing on themselves. But this...this felt deliberate. Engineered.

At the base of the staircase, Jiho found himself in a vast chamber illuminated by a faint, pulsing glow. Strange, jagged structures jutted out from the walls, their surfaces etched with runes that shifted and flickered like living flames.

The system chimed again:

Node Stabilization in Progress.

Fragment Influence Detected: Unknown Origin.

Jiho frowned. Unknown origin? The Nexus usually operated within defined parameters, even in its chaos. Something was tampering with it—something intelligent.

As Jiho moved further into the chamber, he noticed several glowing orbs embedded into the walls. Each pulsed faintly, synchronized with the rhythms of the Nexus energy. When he leaned closer, his system displayed more information:

Artifact Type: Nexus Memory Core.

Function: Historical Archive. Extraction Possible.

"Historical archives, huh?" Jiho's voice was soft as he reached out, touching one of the glowing orbs. Immediately, his vision blurred, and the world around him faded.

A Glimpse of the Past

Jiho found himself standing in what looked like an ancient laboratory. The air was thick with tension as robed figures moved hurriedly, their voices raised in heated arguments. Strange devices filled the room, glowing with the same pulsing energy as the orbs.

"This is reckless!" one of them shouted, slamming their hand onto a table. "You can't use live subjects! The consequences—"

"We have no choice!" another interrupted. "The Nexus will consume this world unless we stabilize it. If sacrifices are necessary, so be it!"

Jiho's eyes narrowed. The figures weren't clear—they appeared more like silhouettes than people—but their words sent a chill through him.

The scene shifted abruptly. Now he saw a massive, glowing portal, its edges crackling with energy. The robed figures stood before it, chanting in unison as the portal began to twist and expand.

"Bind it to the bloodline!" one of them shouted. "Only those marked can control the core!"

Jiho gasped as he snapped back to reality, his breath uneven. The glowing orb dimmed, its energy spent.

"Bind it to the bloodline..." Jiho repeated, his mind racing. The robed figures clearly had knowledge of the Nexus, far beyond what modern researchers understood. But what did they mean by binding it to a bloodline?

Before he could process further, the chamber trembled violently. Jiho instinctively stepped back, his dagger drawn. From the shadows of the room, a figure emerged—not a monster, but a man.

He was tall and dressed in sleek, black combat gear, a Silver Fang Guild insignia etched into his shoulder. His eyes glowed faintly with Nexus energy, and a cruel smile spread across his face.

"Well, well," the man drawled. "Kang Jiho, isn't it? You've been quite the elusive little rat."

Jiho's grip on his dagger tightened. "And you are?"

"Call me Seo Gwan," the man replied, his tone mocking. "I've been tasked with bringing you in. Dead or alive—your choice."

Jiho's lips curled into a faint smirk. "Silver Fang must be desperate if they're sending someone like you."

Seo Gwan's expression darkened, and with a snap of his fingers, the air around him rippled. From the walls, shadows coalesced into humanoid shapes—hunters bound to the Silver Fang Guild, their bodies augmented by Nexus energy.

"Desperate?" Seo Gwan sneered. "No, we're just tired of playing games. You don't even know what you are, do you? What your family has hidden from you?"

Jiho's eyes narrowed. The mention of his family sent a spark of anger through him, but he pushed it down, his voice calm. "You're wasting your breath. Let's get this over with."

The fight erupted in an instant.

Seo Gwan's augmented hunters charged, their movements unnaturally fast and precise. Jiho vanished into the shadows, reappearing behind one of them and driving his dagger into their spine. The hunter collapsed, but the others showed no hesitation, their attacks relentless.

Jiho activated Rule Bender: Shadow Convergence, summoning a swirling mass of shadows that lashed out like tendrils, ensnaring two more hunters. With a flick of his wrist, the shadows tightened, crushing them.

Seo Gwan watched with a bemused expression. "Impressive. But let's see how you handle this."

He raised his hand, and the glowing orbs on the walls shattered. The pulsing energy within them flowed into Seo Gwan, his body radiating with power as the chamber itself seemed to come alive.

Jiho's system chimed urgently:

Warning: Energy Levels Critical. Threat Level: S-Rank.

"An S-Rank?" Jiho muttered, a rare flicker of frustration crossing his face. "Can't catch a break today."

Seo Gwan grinned. "What's wrong, Jiho? Losing your nerve?"

Jiho stepped forward, his dagger glowing with Nexus energy. "You talk too much."

The battle began anew, the room quaking under the clash of Nexus-powered abilities. Jiho's calm exterior masked the storm brewing within him. Seo Gwan's taunts about his family lingered in his mind, fueling a quiet fury.

But Jiho knew one thing for sure—if Silver Fang was willing to escalate to this level, the Nexus's secrets were even more dangerous than he'd imagined.
