Chapter 26: Chapter 26: The Cost of Blood
The tension in the air was palpable, each second stretching endlessly as Jiho and Haeun faced Kang Daehyun and his men. The ruins of the ancient temple seemed to hum with an otherworldly energy, the Nexus core's presence stirring the air like a silent storm.
Jiho's shadows coiled tightly around him, preparing for a fight. "You've been busy, Daehyun," he said coldly, his voice cutting through the stillness. "But I'm not in the mood for family reunions."
Daehyun chuckled darkly, his stance relaxed yet commanding. "Oh, Jiho, you've grown sharper. But you're still too soft. Always thinking you can take on the world alone." He gestured toward his men. "Do you really think you can get past all of us? Even with her?"
Haeun stepped forward, her blade drawn. "Keep talking, and you'll find out just how far he can go."
Daehyun's eyes flicked to her, a smirk curling his lips. "Ah, the traitor. Silver Fang must be desperate if they're relying on you."
"Enough," Jiho snapped, his shadows rippling with restrained fury. "What do you want, Daehyun? Why are you here?"
Daehyun's expression shifted, the humor in his eyes replaced by something colder. "The Nexus core, of course. Same as you. But unlike you, I'm not here to play hero. This power—it belongs to the strongest. And you, little brother, are not strong enough to claim it."
The First Strike
The moment the last word left Daehyun's lips, the air exploded into motion. Jiho's shadows surged forward, a torrent of black tendrils lashing out at the men around Daehyun. Haeun leapt into action, her blade slicing through the chaos with deadly precision.
Daehyun stepped back, his movements calculated as he watched his men clash with Jiho and Haeun. "Impressive," he murmured, a faint smile playing on his lips. "But not enough."
With a wave of his hand, Daehyun summoned his own power—a blazing crimson aura that seemed to burn the very air around him. The ground beneath him cracked, the force of his energy shaking the temple ruins.
Jiho's shadows recoiled briefly, reacting to the sheer intensity of Daehyun's aura. But Jiho didn't falter. He pushed forward, his gaze locked on his brother.
"You always did love to show off," Jiho said, his voice steady despite the chaos. "Let's see how far that arrogance takes you."
A Battle of Wills
The fight that ensued was brutal and unrelenting. Jiho's shadows clashed against Daehyun's crimson flames, the two forces colliding in bursts of light and darkness. Haeun fought alongside Jiho, her agility and precision making her a deadly force against Daehyun's men.
But it was clear that Daehyun wasn't just another opponent. He was stronger, more experienced, and unrelenting. Each strike from his flames pushed Jiho further back, the heat searing through his defenses.
"You've improved," Daehyun admitted, his tone almost approving. "But you're still not good enough."
Jiho gritted his teeth, his shadows surging around him like a living shield. "We'll see about that."
A Desperate Gamble
As the battle raged on, it became clear that they couldn't win through brute force alone. Haeun darted to Jiho's side, her breathing heavy. "We need to end this now. The longer we fight, the more ground we lose."
Jiho nodded, his mind racing. He glanced toward the temple ruins, where the faint glow of the Nexus core was visible through the cracks in the stone.
"If we can destabilize the core," Jiho said, "it might create enough of a distraction to turn the tide."
Haeun hesitated. "That's risky. If it backfires—"
"We don't have a choice," Jiho interrupted.
Turning the Tide
While Haeun held off Daehyun's men, Jiho made his move. He slipped past the chaos, his shadows cloaking him as he approached the Nexus core. The energy radiating from it was overwhelming, a pulsating force that seemed to pull at his very soul.
With a deep breath, Jiho reached out, his shadows wrapping around the core. The moment he touched it, a surge of power shot through him, almost knocking him off his feet. But he held on, focusing his energy on destabilizing the core's connection to the Nexus.
The ground shook violently, cracks spreading through the temple ruins as the core's energy spiraled out of control. A blinding light filled the air, forcing everyone to shield their eyes.
When the light faded, the battlefield was in disarray. Daehyun's men were scattered, some unconscious, others retreating in confusion. Haeun stood nearby, her blade at the ready, though her expression was one of awe.
Jiho stepped forward, his shadows retreating as he faced Daehyun. "It's over," he said, his voice steady.
Daehyun's eyes burned with fury, but he didn't move. He glanced at the Nexus core, now dim and dormant, before turning back to Jiho. "You think this is a victory?" he spat. "This is only the beginning."
With that, Daehyun disappeared into the shadows, his retreat as sudden as his arrival.
Aftermath
The ruins were silent, save for the distant sounds of the city. Jiho and Haeun stood amidst the wreckage, the weight of the battle settling over them.
"That was…intense," Haeun said, breaking the silence.
Jiho didn't respond immediately. His gaze was fixed on the Nexus core, now little more than a lifeless stone. "We've bought ourselves some time," he said finally. "But this isn't over. Daehyun will be back. And he won't come alone."
Haeun nodded, her expression resolute. "Then we'll be ready."
As they turned to leave, Jiho couldn't shake the feeling that Daehyun's words were more than just a threat. They were a promise.
