Chapter 16: Chapter 16
This is far from over.
Choose your mother or your father.
It was accompanied by a photo of a woman who looked like her mother, her mouth wrapped, her body tied to a chair, and in a despicable state.
She didn't know when she started shouting, letting the phone slip off her hands, and jumping. She felt an external force, she believed to be Caleb, preventing her from getting wilder.
"What's wrong? Is she okay?" the same doctor who came to warn them when she was making a scene had a different look this time around, a concerned and terrifying look.
"Mummy!" she kept shouting, and Caleb got the jerk, remembering that she was still missing, and whatever she had seen was not good at all.
She managed to show Caleb the video, and he immediately understood why she reacted that way.
"I'm so sorry." He said again, softly, as she became calmer when she realized that shouting and making a scene would not bring her mother here.
He led her to the closest chair where she sat, burying her head in her hand as her thoughts flew around. Caleb knew enough to stay beside her and not touch her.
Tears flowed effortlessly, being the only thing she could do. Thoughts also flowed in on what to do as Caleb took the phone and kept it in his pocket, maybe that was the best for her. She needed to take a break from getting those kinds of traumatic messages.
She continued crying and Caleb was there throughout, holding her for hours until a doctor signalled for her to see her father.
She ran to see him and found him lying on the bed, turning slowly to them and giving the brightest smile Lizzy had ever seen in days. She had missed him although he had only been unconscious for less than three hours.
"Daddy. Thank God. I thought I lost you." She said, hugging him as Caleb got closer to him, another charming smile on his face.
"I'm not going anywhere any soon, my love." He said affirmatively. A very serious headache welcomed him when he woke up, his head was blank, but thankfully, a kind doctor came, noticing his uncomfortability. After a few minutes, he
tried to remember what happened to him led to being in a hospital bed. All he could remember was the fact that his wife was still missing.
"Have you heard anything about your mum?" he asked, genuinely hoping for a positive.
However, her long sigh was enough response for him. "We've not found her, Dad." the sadness in her voice was bad enough for her father.
"Don't worry, my love. She must be safe somewhere." he was not sure about that statement, but he wanted to say something good to encourage her.
"Thank you, dad. Are you good?" she moved to touch his face, staring at his eyes to check if he was okay.
"Yes, I am," he touched her hand and smiled back at her, feeling better because he understood she still loved him so much."
"What happened?" Caleb said with a little look of concern on his face.
"I really do not remember."
"Should we be scared?" She was really disturbed about what happened to him and the fact that he could not remember made him more disturbed.
"No, the doctor said it is normal. As soon as I remember, I'll definitely tell you." he smiled at her and it reproduced a charming smile on her face.
He concluded that his phone was back at home, and he needed it, so he asked her to help him since he had to check if it would remind him of the last three minutes before his unconsciousness.
"Alright Dad, I will be on my way home in a minute." She told her dad after spending time with him. It was 10 pm, and she thought she needed rest, even if it was just a little. Caleb took her hands in his as they walked out of the hospital.
"I love you together." a man said, looking at them with a lot of enthusiasm. This wasn't the first time they received that kind of compliment, so they just smiled back at him and walked out, but Lizzy's cheeks were pink from blushing from the compliment as she did for every one of them.
When they got to the car, she surprised him by giving him a very big and tight hug, and since he didn't expect it, he staggered initially but held her firmly, excited that she had given him what he had longed for.
"Thank you," she said to him, finally breaking from the hug.
"You are welcome. I'll do anything for you, and it is not just a cliche." he hoped he had not said too much, because he did not want to disturb her with how he felt for her.
"I know." she finally said, getting closer to him so that no air could come between them. He tilted his head and brought it closer as she raised hers a little, meeting at the same point and for the first time, Caleb felt her lip in between his lips, and it was the best feeling for them both.
She wanted him more than ever, but she had other things to focus on right now, and she hoped he would understand. When they separated after one or two intimate kisses, a phone buzzed, this time from Caleb's phone, and just as he was about to view the text that came, she viewed the message and the messenger's name from his screen, reading a text she sent.
Hey. Is Markus dead yet?
Please tell me you did it!
Tell me you didn't screw it!
She had read it before Caleb did and even reacted before he finished reading it.
"Caleb, what was that? Who was that?" She remembered Evelyn was Lucas' mother, but she could not conclude it was her.
"Babe, I don't know anything about this." he looked so perplexed about the message, he kept asking who this person was, and what he or she was hoping to achieve.
"Don't call me that!" She shouted, and people who sat close to the parking lot stared at them, wondering when the goofy lovely time they were having changed in such a short time into a fight.
"What was that? Please, explain." she was already exhausted from the day's trauma, but she needed to hear how the only person she believed was not in any mess also bathed himself in it.
"Believe me, I don't know anything about this…."
"About what?" She didn't want to give him more time to tell the lies, and immediately, she was so scared of believing what anyone had to say, because it seemed they had one secret or another.
"You know what? I don't want to have anything to do with you right now. Please, leave." she wanted him to leave her and if possible, never show his face again, for now.
"But, you can't drive this…."
"I can drive, and it's none of your business. You all are liars anyway." she collected her car key from him and entered the car, leaving him in jeopardy and doleful regarding the exchange they just had.
After crying for some minutes in the car, she decided to text Mia, but another text welcomed her.
You saved just one life. Are you sure you can save the next?
These words stared at her as she maintained eye contact with it too. Stunningly, she seemed detached and resigned from being emotionally attached to finding out what a text meant. She was mentally drained and all she wanted to do was turn on the ignition, drive home smoothly and get some rest.
Caleb on the other hand went into the hospital, walking sprightly to his room to talk about what just happened.
"Markus, something just happened," he said, fretting and looking dejected.
"Caleb, what happened? Where is Lizzy?" He was about to drift into sleep when he heard his voice and had to sit up, thinking his daughter would follow after him and reveal the update about her mother he thought they had.
"Someone sent me this text." he gave him his phone to read himself. "I don't know this person," he said, answering Markus' first question, but he had other questions to ask.
"But why is the person's name saved on your phone?" this question bothered him the first time he saw the text because it was not from a new number. In addition, he always believed there was something Caleb was hiding all along, so he wouldn't be surprised if he was right. The only thing he was concerned about was how his daughter would take the news, knowing that she trusted him more than her family.
He paused to process the information, knowing that no one would believe him because of the concrete evidence that was revealed.
Lizzy gripped the wheel, ignited the car to make it roar for life and moved out of the hospital, her knuckles white and her eyes red from stress and tears and the words she just read still ringing in her ears. She knew it was a threat or taunt from someone she may know very well, but she wasn't scared anymore.
On the way home, her heart raced again. A few minutes ago, she had seen her father recuperating and it looked like nothing could happen to him like he said, but she knew that just one breath could hinder him from breathing forever. The picture of her mum in danger also haunted her, but she decided to take a break from the series of shocks she had lately.
Suddenly, her phone came alive, revealing a message from Mia. I think I found something that may have a connection with your mum. I'm at the front of your house, and it seems no one is here. Can you meet me there now?
At her house? She wondered what she had discovered again. Did it have anything to do with her mum or something deeper that only unscrambled their web of deceit? The only way she could find out was to get home quickly, so she drove as fast and furious as the movie describes it.
As she went through the dark streets, beautiful street lights everywhere, she was trying to figure out what the text was all about, who Caleb was involved with and how she did not know he was into dubious acts that involved her family. Did he get close to her for a deeper purpose beyond the fact that he loved her? Was he even in love with her?
Before she knew it, she was already home and Mia walked to the car, welcoming her back home.
"Please, come inside. It's not safe to talk here." It was 11 pm and the darkness was as thick as the secret they were about to reveal. They rushed inside and Lizzy locked the door, double-checking to see if she really did it.
"If you don't mind, can I sleep here? I can't make my way home right now." Before she said it, Lizzy had made up her mind to clear up the guest room for her because it would be downright wickedness to throw her into the road that night.
"Of course, it's no problem," she said.
"So, what do you have for me?" she wanted to be fast because she craved sleep.
"It's about your mum, and I'm afraid Caleb is also involved in this." she had given this a thought before calling her. She knew how much Lizzy liked him, even though she didn't want it to be obvious.
"Okay, what do you have to say about them?"
Again, she was at an intersection, her heart pounding, about to make a
choice that could change everything. Would she confidently face the truth, or would she allow fear to tie her to the shadows?
