Luca went straight for the seat right next to Kevin.
Four very conspicuous people sat in a row near the center of the large classroom.
An odd lineup: the beautiful transfer student, the year's number one student, the former dead-last, and a random redhead.
Naturally, the sight drew the attention of everyone else.
Irene said, "Who are you calling a random redhead?!"
Among the onlookers were also Kevin's secret fangirls.
Seeing the famously "hates women" Kevin sitting with not one, but three girls—including the criminally cute transfer student—shattered some hearts. Several were already planning to go home and burn their Kevin x Kevin BL doujinshi.
"Settling who gets to be Aisha's rival... through Summoning Class? Hmph."
Kevin snorted arrogantly. His tone was practically a copy of his sister, Kaima.
"You're gutsy, transfer student. Daring to challenge me in Monster Summoning."
Kevin's confidence wasn't empty. He held the current first-year record for monster summoning.
Whether it was the [Red-Eyes Black Dragon] summoned during the midterm, or the [Dunames Dark Witch] from an ordinary class—Kevin had summoned the strongest monsters in their year.
"I'm still not fully familiar with Fusion Academy's standards, but this does sound fun. Or... are you scared you'll lose to me and won't be worthy of being Aisha's rival?"
"Hah!" Classic provocation—highly effective. Kevin's fighting spirit ignited instantly.
"You don't understand Aisha at all. I'm not giving up the rival spot to you, transfer student."
"Interesting. Fine. Let's settle it, Kevin!"
"Uh... guys... you're dragging me into this without asking how I feel."
Aisha, completely uninvolved, somehow became the prize in this battle for rival status.
Worse yet, the competition was Monster Summoning—Aisha's worst subject.
Sure, it was technically between Kevin and Luca. But if both of them summoned insanely powerful monsters... and she only pulled out a low-level weakling...
Couldn't they just be each other's rivals instead of dragging her into this?
Not that her protest mattered. Judging by their determination, Aisha's role as "the rival prize" was already set.
Summoning Class began.
At first, Miles had been confused about how Duel Monster Summoning worked on the Spirit Continent.
If Duelists could only summon monsters during the Thursday Summoning Class, where did unaffiliated Duelists—like Rare Card Hunters—get their monsters?
The same applied to Spell and Trap crafting, which required Magic Points and the Magic Directory.
But he eventually figured it out.
All those seemingly essential facilities at the academy... were just conveniences.
For example, converting academic credits into Magic Points wasn't strictly necessary. Duelists could gain spells and randomly crafted cards simply through the Spirit Eyes-defined concept of "growth."
The Magic Directory just made growth smoother and allowed Duelists to direct their Deck's evolution.
The same went for monster summoning.
Even without the academy's magical amplification circles, a Duelist could summon monsters directly once their Spirit Eyes accumulated enough magic. The amplifiers simply increased summon frequency—or made it easier to summon stronger monsters.
In essence, the academy's support systems were very useful; however, not strictly necessary.
Still, it was undeniable: Duelists trained through the academy system grew faster and in a more focused direction than freelancers.
In this world, "school is useless" simply wasn't true.
It was exactly why nobles scrambled to get their kids into one of the three academies.
"Alright, Summoning Class starts now. Those ready can step onto the magic amplification circle. You've got the whole morning. Get moving."
Miss Erin tossed the student roster onto her desk. Very on-brand for her teaching style.
No assigned order. Completely free.
If you felt confident, go first.
If you felt nervous, wait—or don't summon at all.
But miss your chance? No monster, no credit reward. Your loss.
"Me first! Me first!" Irene felt like she was in peak form today—no way she'd lose to Kevin.
Stepping onto the magic amplifier, Irene tapped her Spirit Eyes console.
"In the name of HEROES—descend, my monster! Summon!"
[Elemental HERO Bubbleman] Level 4│WATER│Warrior│800 ATK
As a Level 4, its stats weren't impressive. But as one of the signature HERO monsters, Bubbleman's ability to replenish the hand made Irene extremely satisfied.
Miss Erin was pleased too. As a reward for being the first to step up, Irene scored a perfect 10.
"Full marks. See that?"
Back at her seat, Irene smugly flaunted her result at Kevin and Luca, the rival contenders.
"Hmph. Just Bubbleman."
Kevin stood next, stepping into the magic amplifier.
"Roar from the depths of my soul—thunder! Monster Summon!"
[Paladin of Dark Dragon] Level 4│DARK│Dragon/Ritual/Effect│ATK 1900
A knight riding a black dragon emerged within the summoning circle. With 1900 Attack, it was nearly maxed out for a Level 4 monster.
But the key wasn't the stats—it was a Ritual Monster that supported Kevin's [Red-Eyes Black Dragon] Deck.
"A solid support monster at this stage. Full marks. Don't forget to craft the Ritual Spell later, Kevin."
"Yes, Miss Erin."
Naturally, Kevin also received a perfect 10. Two back-to-back full marks made the other students hesitant to even try—they knew this was now a battle with serious tension.
"Oooh~ I see now."
Watching Irene and Kevin's summons, Luca's sapphire eyes sparkled with mischief.
"Looks like Fusion Academy's summoning standards are... pretty low."
