Chapter 36: Vegeta Whose Pride Was Trampled
After being knocked back by Magetta's heavy punch, Vegeta's face darkened. He had underestimated the Metalman's brute force and surprising speed.
"Hnngh!"
Magetta wasted no time. He roared as jets of steam hissed from his shoulders, and then charged at Vegeta with thunderous stomps, swinging his iron fists in a relentless barrage. The clang of metal striking the air echoed across the arena. Vegeta gritted his teeth and fell back into defense, using his arms to deflect the blows.
"OOOH!!"
Magetta raised both fists overhead and slammed down with all his weight. Seizing that narrow opening, Vegeta flipped backward and retreated several meters with a quick aerial dash.
"Haaah!" Vegeta growled, gathering a compressed ki sphere in his palm and hurling it at the incoming Magetta.
Magetta bellowed again. From his wide-open mouth, he launched a molten blast of lava that collided directly with Vegeta's energy sphere.
BOOM!!
The explosion rippled through the stadium. Vegeta's energy attack was engulfed and shattered by the magma, and a searing wave of molten heat surged toward him!
Vegeta narrowed his eyes, drew back both hands, and unleashed a concentrated Qigong Cannon, shouting with force as the beam met Magetta's lava midair.
BOOM!!
The two attacks clashed violently, neither side giving ground.
With his energy pulsing and his frustration mounting, Vegeta transformed into a Super Saiyan, golden aura flaring around him. With a deep snarl, he poured more power into his ki beam, the raw energy surging forth.
"OOOOH!!!"
Magetta roared in response. The jets on his back erupted with more pressure, launching massive bursts of superheated magma. He leaned forward and poured more heat into the attack, his mouth glowing red from the thermal pressure.
Shockingly, Magetta's lava began to eat through Vegeta's ki blast.
"His lava's melting Vegeta's energy!" Krillin exclaimed in alarm.
"This Metalman's tough," Tien muttered, sweat forming on his brow.
"But Vegeta won't lose," Goku said with confidence, still smiling. "It's Vegeta, after all."
Weiss, arms behind his back, calmly spoke: "Notice anything unusual? Vegeta's breathing is uneven."
Goku's smile faded. "Huh?"
"Look closely," Whis continued. "It's not just the heat, Magetta's lava attacks are consuming the oxygen within the sealed barrier."
"Oh no!" Krillin gasped. "He can't breathe!"
"That tin can doesn't even need air!" Yamcha growled. "That's cheating!"
"Damn you, Champa!" Beerus roared from the stands. "You rigged the arena!"
"Vegeta, watch out!" Goku shouted urgently.
Down in the ring, Vegeta could feel his chest tightening. The air was thinning. His muscles felt heavy.
He clenched his fists. I won't lose. Not like this.
With a furious shout, Vegeta launched another blast of white-hot energy, this time laced with focused ki. The beam ripped through the air, momentarily pushing back Magetta's lava.
"OOOOOH!!!"
Magetta responded with a deafening cry. His massive metal boots slammed into the ground, anchoring him. His eyes flashed red, and the lava erupted once more with volcanic fury, smashing through Vegeta's attack and driving toward him with an unstoppable wave.
"Tch!!" Vegeta snarled and abruptly cut off his blast. With a sudden dash, he darted forward and sliced the incoming lava with a sharp ki strike from his hand, parting the molten wave like water.
HSSSSHHH!!
Steam hissed around him as magma split and splashed, but before he could recover—
CRACK!!
Magetta suddenly loomed before him and delivered a devastating punch straight to Vegeta's gut. The prince was hurled across the ring like a missile, crashing into the stone floor with a thunderous crash.
"Ughh!!"
Magetta wasn't done. He stomped toward Vegeta, grabbed his leg mid-fall, and slammed him repeatedly into the arena like a hammer!
"Arghh!!"
Blood splattered as Vegeta bounced off the ring. But as he flew upward, Vegeta clenched his teeth, eyes flashing with fury.
BOOM BOOM BOOM!!
Vegeta exploded midair with his signature Galick burst, firing dozens of rapid-fire energy blasts in a spiraling barrage aimed at Magetta!
But Magetta reacted quickly, weaving his hulking frame through the blasts. The metal titan steam-jetted forward and closed the distance, appearing once again directly in front of Vegeta!
Vegeta, who had just lost his momentum, was thrown into disarray. Caught off guard, he could only brace himself and defend against Magetta's heavy assault!
BOOM!!
One misstep and Vegeta was struck by another powerful hit! He was sent flying across the arena again!
"OOHH!!" Magetta roared and leapt into the air, positioning himself above Vegeta mid-flight. In the next instant, a concentrated blast of molten lava erupted from his mouth!
Vegeta's eyes widened—he quickly raised both arms in front of him, crossing them in defense!
BOOOOM!!!
The blast connected Vegeta's body smashed into the arena floor, magma splashing in every direction. The entire ring trembled from the impact, cracks forming from the sheer heat and pressure!
"Vegeta!!" Goku shouted, his face tense with worry.
Beerus stood frozen, eyes sharp. The rest of Universe 7 looked grim. The smoke was thick and for a second, it looked as if Vegeta had been defeated.
"No way!!" Beerus muttered, shocked. "That... that can't be it! Neither Goku nor Vegeta fought at full power yet. What is this nonsense?!"
Luya narrowed his eyes as he watched the battlefield, unmoved. This wasn't quite how he expected things to unfold but it wasn't a bad turn, either.
The smoke slowly cleared.
Vegeta's battered form was visible he was alive, but his expression was stormy. Sweat beaded his forehead, and his body trembled slightly.
But his eyes weren't focused on the robot. They were fixed downward.
His right foot was barely balancing atop a chunk of the shattered arena.
The referee rushed over, squinting at Vegeta's footing. After inspecting the area carefully, he raised his hand and shouted:
"Not out of bounds! Player Vegeta's foot is resting on a legal fragment of the ring! According to tournament rules, he's still in the match! The fight continues!"
"OOOOHH!!!"
The crowd erupted in surprise and excitement. Everyone on Universe 7's side cheered in relief Vegeta hadn't been eliminated after all!
But Vegeta didn't share their enthusiasm.
His brow twitched. His teeth clenched.
The Saiyan Prince, who prided himself on absolute strength, had survived the match not because of power... but because of a technicality. A sliver of debris had saved him.
And he hated it.
Golden energy surged around him. Vegeta slowly floated into the air, his face blank, but his aura roared with suppressed fury.
From the stands, Goku and Luya exchanged glances. They both knew what this meant.
"Vegeta..." Goku muttered, his voice tinged with concern.
Luya exhaled slowly and looked at Magetta with pity. "He's finished."
Of all the warriors to provoke, offending Vegeta's pride was suicide. This was the man who once tried to kill Beerus over an insult to Bulma, who challenged Goku at every turn, and whose rage had surpassed gods.
"But...but...you...BASTARD!!" Vegeta's voice thundered across the arena as he flew under the edge of the shield, locking eyes on the robot.
Magetta let out a steam-fueled roar, beating his chest in defiance. Twin jets of superheated air erupted from his back like a furnace.
But something changed in Vegeta.
His ki flared erratically, lightning crackling around him. The temperature in the ring dropped for a moment not physically, but in pressure. The Saiyan Prince's fury was taking over.
"NO! NOT GOOD! TAKE HIM OUT NOW!" Champa bellowed from the stands, panic evident in his voice.
Magetta, reacting to the command, roared again and fired a massive stream of molten magma straight toward Vegeta!
