Chapter 2: The Road Towards The Future
Two months passed by in a flash. Every day Chao would wake up early, go outside of the village and activate his martial spirit to practice. This helped him get used to his newly obtained powers.
Through this practice, Chao learned that he had the downgraded version of wolverine's regeneration. He could heal from cuts and bruises in minutes. Hard injuries like a broken arm took an hour or even more, based on the severity of the injury.
He also found out that his martial spirit's head had a natural affinity with venom. One of those times when he went out to practice, he took an apple with him. When he started eating the apple, his martial soul was active, which caused a dark green mark to be left on the apple.
Chao has been trying to find the potency of his venom, but he wasn't cruel enough to test an unknown venom on a random person in the village. This has halted his progress in this Area.
Chao also found out that if he has his martial soul active until his soul power runs out, he will pass out. This lead to an interesting discovery, his soul power consumption decreases after he wakes up.
When he first started practicing, he could have his martial spirit active for 30 minutes without moving. After practicing for a month he could last for an hour. The only reason why Chao doesn't abuse this method is because he is scared. there is possibility he might be harming himself by overdrawing his potential.
For the last practice, he has been asking kids to throw rocks at him. In this world practice makes perfect. Chao figured he would try to improve his reflexes by dodging the rocks with different restrictions.
Each kid would place a different restriction on him.One of the restriction Chao came up with was not being able to dodge rocks thrown by farmer's kid, or not to block stones from lumberjack's kid. The hardest one was catching all of the rocks thrown by blacksmith's child.
The funniest part is, he didn't even have to offer anything to those kids. Since kids (or people in general) on Douluo Continent love violence, they happily agreed, and even kept asked him to do it again.
Obviously all of those torture methods didn't go unnoticed. Grandma Daiyu complained to the children's parents multiple times. After a lot of explaining from Chao, she finally believed that he wasn't getting bullied.
One of those times as usual, Chao woke up and went to practice. Pretty quickly he noticed that something was different, so he checked his strength and speed. This didn't yield any result, as they were basically the same as they were yesterday, but the fishy feeling didn't go away.
After he tried all of the tests, he came to the conclusion that his reflexes went through a quality change. When Chao concentrates he can see things much more clearly, and everything seems to be slowed down a little.
He quickly ran towards the village. It took him a minute or two to gather all of the children for his rock therapy. Chao told the children to throw the rocks at him as quickly as they can.
Kid's threw rocks at him, which he managed to manoeuvre around flawlessly. Those throws didn't effect him at all. He wasn't even sweating as he was dodging, blocking and catching the flying rocks that were being thrown by ten different kids.
For half an hour, the kids threw rocks at him nonstop, and it was as easy as taking a walk for him.
For the twenty-five days after that, Chao was trying to come up with a way to improve training method for his reflexes, as the old one wasn't helpful anymore. Chao tried everything, but all of his effort was in vain. Since he could not improve his reflexes anymore, he started focusing only on his physical strength.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today was the day when the Village Chief would take him to the Nuoding academy.
He will be spending up to 5 days with the village chief on the road, which meant that his journey would be very boring without training.
The Village Chief came to Chao's house in the early morning hours. He knocked on the door moderately. He didn't have to wait long for Chao to open the door.
The Village Chief entered Chao's house and said Hello to Grandma Daiyu. The Village chief was a man of few words, so the small talk didn't last for long. He told Chao to get ready quickly as they had a long way to go.
Chao got ready quickly and was about to go with the Village chief who had already gone out of the house. Right before he step out of the house, he heard an annoyed cough behind him. Grandma Daiyu had her hands spread expecting a hug while glaring at Chao. He quickly hugged her and ran out of the house.
The Village Chief wasn't walking fast, so Chao was able to catch up to him quickly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Chao's mind trip was going to be really borning, but nothing could prepare him for reality. for two days straight there was an awkward silence between the Village Chief and him.
Two days of total silence broke Chao, he could not take it anymore and finally talked.
"Village Chief, why are you always so quiet? I can count on my hands the amount of times I have heard you speak."
The Village Chief looked at Chao with Envy for his youth. " when you live for as long as I have, you learn that speaking too much is what foolish people do. Besides, what can I talk to you about? We are totally different people, even if we wanted to, we might not be able to find a common topic to talk about."
Chao quickly disagreed. "Test me, I'm very versatile. I might even be able to take some stress of your shoulders. Besides, if we have to spend three more days in total silence, I might go crazy."
The Village Chief laughed like a billionaire and said "Okay little one. listen to my troubles. For 35 years, nobody in our village awakened a martial soul with soul power. You are the first one, and you aren't even from our village, which makes it look like we are cursed."
Chao had a decent amount of Knowledge about the douluo world. He knew it didn't matter what village you were born in. The most important part was the martial spirit, which usually came from the parents. Chao could not bring himself to tell the old man that nobody in his Village was talented, so he decided to stay silent.
After a bit of silence, the old man laughed again. "Don't worry little one, I wasn't expecting you to solve this problem. It's not even a big deal, we can still survive without new soul masters. Which brings me to a certain topic. Why have I never heard you call me by my name? Perhaps you don't know it?"
Chao looked up to the village chief and said "Let me explain. it's not like I didn't remember your name. It's just that you never told me, and I felt awkward asking you for it after knowing you for so long."
The Village Chief didn't tease him too much and introduced himself. "My name is Kai Lang, but you can call me Chief Lang. Little man, don't forget my name or you will actually be in trouble. I'll tell your grandma that you have been rude."
After this interaction, the journey became a lot more pleasant. Every day, Chao would talk to Chief Lang for hours on end, which helped him gather a lot of information.
Chao learned that the old man next to him was a spirit leader with the soul power of 43. Not only was he strong for a village chief, he also had a decent martial spirit.
When they had one more day left on the road, they came across a random stray wolf. That's when he saw that Kai had some kind of black wolf martial spirit. No, it's was not black, it was more of an absence of light.
Chief Lang had four spirit rings, two of them were yellow and the other two were purple.
The purple soul ring lit up, and the old man disappeared. Kai was gone for two seconds, but it was enough to slice the wolf in half.
This shocked Chao. He didn't think that some random village chief could be so strong. Chief Lang came back to the kid who was looking at him with a pikachu face.
At this time Chao's mind was Chaotic. He came up with a lot of plans to gain the trust of people, so they would help him hunt for a soul ring, but he didn't expect to have a gem mine next to him for five days.
Chao had to find a way to quickly convince Kai to help him hunt for his first soul ring, as they were a day away from the Academy. He had to be persuasive, but not aggressive, because Kai might feel used and not help him.
After hours of stressful thinking, he couldn't come up with a foolproof plan to persuade Cheif Lang, so he just shot his shot. "Chief Lang, I wanna ask you something. Could you help me get my first spirit ring after I register at the academy?"
Kai looked at Chao with an elderly warmth, and patted his shoulder "I'll help you little man, but if you aren't on level ten of soul power, you can't absorb a soul ring"
Chao was happy to be able to get a sould ring so easily, and said "I am already on level 10, that means you agree to help me right?"
At first Kai was happy for Chao but he noticed the problem right away. "Didn't you awaken a soul power of eight? how did you practice up to level ten without knowing any soul power refining technique?"
Chao's heart started racing, but he tried to play it off. "What is 'soul power refining technique'? I just guided the soul power from outside into my body and I leveled up."
Obviously, this excuse wasn't believable at all, but Chief Lang decided not to pursue it. "Okay. You will register tomorrow, and on the next morning, I'll take you to get a soul ring."
After another day of walking, they finally got to Nouding city. Chief Lang took him around the city to help him get familiar with everything. They finished strolling around the city quickly and finally reached The Nouding Academy
