Chapter 19: Dealing with Hostile Territories
With the newly established transportation network expanding their reach, the combined community soon found themselves on a collision course with the powerful gangs that controlled various regions beyond their familiar zones. These gangs were territorial and saw the community's encroachment as a threat to their own dominance and access to resources.
The first encounter happened when a convoy of vehicles from the community was traveling along a newly repaired road towards an area rumored to have a large supply of medical supplies. As they entered what was clearly marked as gang territory, they were quickly surrounded by a group of rough-looking individuals on motorcycles and in heavily modified trucks.
The gang members brandished their weapons and demanded that the convoy turn back and leave all their supplies behind. The community's drivers and guards remained calm, knowing that a hasty move could lead to bloodshed. They immediately contacted the central bases through the communication systems installed in the vehicles, alerting Zhao Yi and the other leaders about the situation.
Zhao Yi sprang into action. He accessed the convoy's on-board cameras and sensors remotely, using the software he had developed, to assess the gang's strength and formation. Based on the data he received, he quickly formulated a plan.
He instructed the convoy to try and negotiate first. The lead negotiator from the community explained that they meant no harm and were simply looking for medical supplies to help their people. They offered to trade some of the goods they had brought along, such as fresh produce from the settlement's farms and tools from the bunker's stockpile.
However, the gang leader was stubborn and refused to listen. It seemed that they were more interested in showing their power and intimidating the community. Sensing that negotiation was failing, Zhao Yi activated a series of defensive measures he had installed in the vehicles beforehand.
Some of the vehicles were equipped with smoke screen generators that could be remotely triggered. Zhao Yi set them off, creating a thick cloud of smoke that confused the gang members and gave the convoy a chance to reposition themselves. At the same time, the vehicles with mounted turrets were readied for action.
The gang, realizing they were being outmaneuvered, launched an attack. They fired at the convoy, but the community's fighters fought back. The turrets returned fire, aiming at the gang's vehicles and positions with precision guided by the targeting software Zhao Yi had created.
The battle was intense, but the community's well-coordinated defense and the element of surprise from their technological advantages gave them the upper hand. The gang, suffering losses, eventually retreated, allowing the convoy to continue on its way.
This incident served as a wake-up call for the community. They knew that they couldn't avoid these hostile territories if they wanted to continue growing and securing valuable resources. Zhao Yi gathered the leaders and strategists to come up with a long-term plan.
They decided to start by gathering more intelligence on the different gangs in the region. Zhao Yi developed a surveillance system using drones that they had refurbished. These drones could fly over gang-controlled areas undetected, sending back images and information about their bases, numbers, and patterns of movement.
Based on this intelligence, they would then plan either to negotiate more effectively with the gangs, offering deals that would benefit both sides, or, if necessary, conduct strategic operations to neutralize the threats they posed. But they were aware that every move had to be calculated carefully, as one wrong step could plunge them into a full-scale war with multiple gangs and endanger everything they had built so far.
