Destined to Be Yours

Chapter 4: Between Joy and Shadows.

Shourya's smile was brighter than the morning sun as he strode into the living room of the Verma mansion, his energy contagious.

Saanvi, curled up on the couch with a cup of coffee, looked up as he entered. Her brother rarely beamed with such unrestrained joy, and seeing him like this brought a flicker of happiness to her weary heart.

"Saanvi!" he called out, his voice filled with excitement. "Guess what!"

She arched an eyebrow, setting her mug down. "What is it, bhaiyya?" she asked softly, her tone steady but her expression tired.

Shourya plopped down next to her, practically bouncing with enthusiasm. "Meera and I… it's official. The engagement is fixed!"

For a moment, Saanvi's lips curved into a smile. "That's amazing" she said, her voice warm. "She's wonderful, and the two of you… you're perfect together."

Shourya grin widened. "She is, isn't she? I've never felt like this about anyone before. It's like… everything finally makes sense."

His words were filled with so much conviction, so much joy, that they tugged at Saanvi's heart. She wanted to match his happiness, to bask in the glow of his excitement, but something held her back. Her hands fidgeted in her lap, her fingers twisting nervously.

"Saanvi," Shourya said, his tone softening as he noticed her hesitation. "You're happy for me, right?"

"I am," she replied quickly, forcing a smile. "I really am."

But Shourya wasn't convinced. "What's wrong?" he asked, leaning closer. "You've been so quiet these days. And you look… tired. Is something going on?"

Saanvi took a deep breath, her fingers tightening around the edge of her sweater. "Bhaiyya," she began, her voice trembling. "There's something I need to tell you."

Shourya brow furrowed, his smile fading as concern took its place. "What is it, Saanvi?"

Her eyes welled up, but she blinked the tears away, determined to hold herself together. "It's about the fire incident… a few months ago."

Shourya stiffened, his protective instincts kicking in. "That was horrible," he said. "But you made it out safe. That's what matters."

She shook her head, her voice dropping to a whisper. "It wasn't just about me. That night… someone else saved me. Someone who risked everything to make sure I was okay."

He frowned, confused. "Who?"

Saanvi hesitated, her heart pounding. "His name is Adithya," she said finally. "He's… my lover."

The room fell silent as Shourya stared at her, processing her words. Saanvi quickly reached out, clutching his hand. "Bhaiyya, please don't get angry. He's not what you think. He's kind, brave, and everything I've ever dreamed of. He didn't just save my life that night—he's been there for me ever since."

Shourya's jaw tightened, his emotions warring between protectiveness and understanding. "Saanvi…" he began, but she cut him off.

"Please," she begged, her voice breaking. "He's a good man. He's honest and selfless, and he loves me. I've never been happier… but…"

She trailed off, her expression crumbling as she reached for a small envelope resting on the coffee table. With trembling hands, she handed it to him. "But there's something you need to know."

Shourya took the envelope, his fingers hesitant as he opened it. Inside was a medical report. His eyes scanned the contents, and with every word, his expression darkened. The joy that had lit up his face minutes ago drained away, replaced by shock and devastation.

He looked up at Saanvi, his voice barely a whisper. "What… what is this?"

She bit her lip, tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry, bhaiyya," she whispered. "I didn't want to hide it from you. I just… I didn't know how to tell you."

Shourya stared at the report again, his heart shattering into a thousand pieces. But even as the weight of the revelation bore down on him, his sister's trembling form reminded him of the love and trust she had placed in him.

The room was heavy with unspoken words, the joy of a moment ago now overshadowed by the gravity of a truth that couldn't be ignored.

Was this the truth that would shatter everything they held dear? How will Shourya digest this truth?
