Chapter 2: Fresh Blood
Raven cut the rogue in half.
"Shadow Step." The rogue said.
The rogue melted into his shadow, Raven saw the shadow heading behind him, he moved his focus to the mage, the moment the mage started casting a spell, Raven thrusted his sword backwards piercing it into the rogue's neck who just jumped out of his shadow, the mage stopped casting.
"Our double attack failed, this never happened before, I am so done, soooo done, I must flee." The mage thought to himself.
Before the mage escaped, Raven picked the rogue's dagger and threw it at the mage, it hit his leg, the mage fell on the ground, Raven sprinted and finished him off.
"Good job." The merchant said.
"Easy work, it could've gone south real easy but I think I got lucky, well even then I would've figured out a way to win." Raven said.
Raven cleaned the blood off of his sword and got back into the carriage then the two headed to the city.
By the time the sun fell and the moon rose, the two got to the city, Raven was paid a hundred and fifty silver coins, twenty he spent on a room and five he spent on food.
In the morning, Raven woke up, cleaned his face with some water and headed to find another job, he headed to the middle of the city where the mission board is, he found it empty, a man stood next to him.
"Someone woke up late, I see." The man said.
"I'm pretty sure it's still morning, what do you mean?" Raven asked.
"You're new here?"
"Yes."
"Well you must at least know that this city is an active hub for mercenaries and adventurers."
"I didn't know that."
"Then why did you come here?"
"I was lost when a merchant picked me up, I ended up here."
"Then I must tell you, you must wake up earlier next time, even then, it's going to be hard to catch a job."
"Then fuck the board, I will find another way."
"Well then you either gotta work for Giren or join the adventurers guild."
"Soooo, who the hell is who?"
"Giren is the head of a mercenary organization, his jobs are hard but he pays well, the guild also provides jobs but each person has a rank which limits his jobs unless he has a high rank so even though there will be jobs available always, there will be a competition for who gets which job."
"Which way is Giren?"
"You see that big building? That's the one."
Raven looks, it's a six story building. Raven enters, he finds himself in a tavern, he looks around, he sees a staircase, next to it are two signs, the first is "Floor 2 and 3 are storage, don't try to open any doors.", the second is "Boss is on the fourth floor."
Raven heads straight up, he notices that busy noise of the tavern is gone, he also realizes he didn't hear it before he entered, it must be a magic spell.
Raven reaches the fourth floor, he sees one door, he opens it, he finds himself himself in an office.
"New face, what do you want?" Giren asks.
"I want to join your organization." Raven said.
"Can you? Do you even have what it takes?"
"My sword can cut anyone who stands in my way."
"No, I don't mean that, strength is in abundance around here, I am asking, do you have what it takes up in that head of yours?"
"I don't I have any degrees that I can show you, but I've figured out this, there's a spell that conceals sound in the first floor, I don't know much about magic but that spell is a kin to shield spells, the spell was effective despite the wide space it affects, so the caster must be strong, someone who can cast a shield and I will never be able to cut them no matter how hard I swing my sword, the person who casted that spell can't be in the first floor, it will be hard for them to focus, and they can't be outside, so they must be somewhere in the building other than the first floor, and the first person I saw after I left the first floor is you, so you must the powerful mage, so that means if you ever had a bounty on your head, this whole building will come along with the prize they put on your head, which seems like the right reward for the risk, so I will come after you, but I will make sure I bring at least two other guys along with special equipment that can pierce magic shields, and a shield that can protect me from magical attacks for good measure."
"And who will be the two other guys?"
"Just human shields, to keep your attention long enough for me to kill you."
"Well done, I am nearly afraid for my life, you know, you're smarter than anyone on the first floor, I grant you access to the fifth floor."
"So I get a key or something?"
"I am a mage, remember, I say my will and the world obeys, the fifth floor door will open for you when you try to open it, as simple as that."
"Then I will go up."
"Not so fast, I have an urgent mission for you, I have ordered some weapons, they haven't been delivered even though I already paid for them, you need to head for the forge and tell the dwarf you'll find there that Giren wants his weapons, before the end of the week."
"It will be done."
Raven headed to the southeast district, there he found the forge blown up, half missing.
