Chapter 22: Chapter 22 - Themyscira Heist

After Hawkgirl left, Hippolyta sat next to Diana, "I sent my ally away, what did you want to talk about?" Her mother had been giving her a look she recognized many times from before while growing up.

"It is about what happened roughly a year ago. The last Phoenix and her demigod ally managed to deeply infiltrate into our island and steal something." Hippolyta prepared to tell her the story.

Roughly One Year Earlier

"We are almost there. The Humming Bird will sit camouflaged by the beach we drop at." Mylo was armored in black combat gear. But he had made sure all his equipment was nonlethal for this particular off the books operation.

Scarlet was geared up in a similar fashion, except she was only armed with a titanium staff. A large part of this operation was promoting the existence of a Phoenix to the Greek gods, in order to cause them to panic. "Yeah yeah I got it. What are we grabbing this time?"

"You will see when we get there. It is not actually located at the central building." A holographic map appeared that showed a three dimensional model of the entire island. He enlarged it so they were looking at the underground areas. "They have an ancient armory that was sealed up. We are only after one of those items, the rest are too weak and useless to us."

"How did you learn about this place?" Scarlett pulled up the crafts info and noticed they were a few minutes away.

"We raided that Vandal Savage hideout awhile back, he had an abundance of random knowledge. This is one of the things I found out about. The schematics of Themyscira as well as a few other ancient places." He brought up and highlighted the underground path. "You will be distracting the Amazons while I break into their armory."

"Oh joy, I get to distract a bunch of time tested semi-immortal warriors. I don't even have magic to help because all of the formulas and spells make no sense." Scarlett complained as she groaned in annoyance.

Mylo rolled his eyes as he shook his head, "you are a fire controlling meta-human with immortality. Combat training to almost the highest of levels of human capability. I very much doubt you will have much trouble distracting and holding them off for half an hour."

Scarlet went to give a snarky response when the rear cargo door opened as the ship landed. Mylo immediately hopped out and moved in between trees and ancient building debris, sticking to the shadows to help hide him. She clicked her tongue as she jumped down landing on the sandy beach. The beach was grainy but lacked the changes from human interaction. She walked further past the beach towards a light she could see in the distance as the Humming Bird both disappeared and went quiet behind her, like it was programmed to do.

She walked for maybe two minutes before she could see a torch quickly approaching her. She rolled her neck as she remembered she could only injure them. She had to avoid maiming and could not kill them otherwise it would cause issues down the road.

"Who goes there? You know the island can not be treaded freely without permission from Queen Hipolyta!" The Amazonian called out.

"I did not, but nor do I care. You can call me the Scarlet Phoenix! You should probably wake your warriors." She then formed a ball of fire on her hand and tossed it to a large tree she saw in the distance. The tree ignited with an explosion causing the pair of guards to flinch.

Then a serious expression formed on their faces, "we are warriors!" They then drew their swords and jumped towards her. Scarlet frowned as she swung her staff in an arc causing a clash of metal as the Amazons were pushed back. She then stabbed forward hitting one of them in the chest causing her to fly back with her metal chest plate shattering. Then she swung it to the other one's legs and flipped her upside down. She then walked past them shaking her head.

"Not enough of a warrior to fight me." She could hear in the distance as bells began to ring. "This is going to be annoying." Half an hour passes as Scarlet encounters several more Amazonian warriors and proceeds to subdued them, only needing to use her staff.

As she was walking towards what looked like a tower she saw fully armored Amazonians, with an older woman in the lead. Scarlet did not even need to be told that she was about to meet someone troublesome.

"Nope." She spun in a circle and a wave of fire generated from her. Her staff turned a bright red as it began to melt. "Well that did not last long, guess I have to make this last move count." Then she threw the remains of the melted staff in the direction of a settlement she saw from a distance. As it flew over the heads of the Amazonians it transformed from slag into fireballs that sped towards the Grecian style buildings.

Scarlet then ran towards the coast. It was time to leave, she was not equipped to fight a whole army of angry warriors. At least not without killing them.

Mylo pushed away the cobwebs as he looked over the metal door. It was protecting the prize he came to acquire. The engravings on it depicted a man, probably a god, who was encompassed by wealth and riches. The door lacked both a handle and a keyhole. So he started looking around the walls, pulling down cobwebs.

He noticed the walls were originally white bricks with mud used as an in between for them. As he looked he noticed one brick was shinier than the rest and less deteriorated, it was marble. Mylo rolled his eyes as he pushed the marble block into the wall. There was noise of stone moving as the cave shook and dust fell from the ceiling and walls.

The dim metal door slowly started opening but it suddenly stopped not even a tenth of the way there. Mylo sighed and walked up to the door, leveraging his hands between the door and the wall. After a slight flex of his muscles and pull the door slides open as a crack could be heard, probably a stone gear braking. Inside the room were an array of items from armor and weapons to pieces of fruit. He ignored most of the items and walked towards a cloth linen that was draped against the back wall.

He pushed it aside and noticed four chests, each with a picture of an item on it. He ignored three of them and went to a tall cabinet-like chest that had the symbol of a spear on it. The lock on it was non-magical, but Mylo pulled out a key from one of his pockets and opened the chest. The key was an intricate sparkling gold with diamond inlaid throughout it.

Once the chest was open, he could feel the pressure from the spear and even see an aura of red and pink. He picked it up and walked out of the room, his grip on the spear getting tighter as he could feel a sense of bloodlust coursing through him.

"Damn, this spear is imbued with some powerful divinities." He smiled as he walked out the cave. As he exited through the bushes which covered the entrance he could see fires in the distance. "Well, it looks like Scar has created a great distraction."

His comlink buzzed to life in his ear. "Hey Mylo, I got them riled up enough. Do you want me to pick you up now?" He could see a number of torches in the distance.

Mylo chuckled, "yes, I will start heading to that coastal tower south of your position." He then began jogging uninterrupted toward the tower he saw in the distance.

Present Day

"If that is all the damage you took then why does the island look like a warzone?" From her mother's story it sounded like only a coastal temple and village were damaged. Diana had never seen the island in such a disarray.

"Because after the Godfall, various creatures have been nipping at our island for items of divine power that are hidden here. Not to mention the fallen gods, but that is not for you to worry about. I am actually more worried about the item they took." Her mother sounded distraught, something she rarely heard.

"You said it was a spear they took from the hidden ancient vault?" Diana asked.

"Yes, the Spear of War. It was supposed to be lost to time or destroyed. It was originally owned by Ares, and was forged by Hephestus. It is the spear that is always depicted in artwork made to depict the God of War." She walked over to pull out another book as she talked. "It bathed in the blood of several mighty creatures and titans. When Ares was bedding Aphrodite he gifted it to her, which she gave to warriors she fancied, who then fell on the battlefield."

"Which also gave it its second name, the Cursed Spear of Lust. Eventually, Aphrodite lost it in a bet and it ended up in Athena's hands. Who gave it as a last gift to any warriors that failed her, it went through almost every war since Ares came to power. But it disappeared shortly after the Trojan war." She flipped to a page and then handed the book to Diana. "It was the possession of three different deities, which each imbued it with power and purpose of their own. By the time it was lost it was able to kill even a god-king in a single strike. That is how much bloodlust and power it possesses."

"So… not something we want out in the world." Diana sighed as she thought of the pair responsible. "The Phoenix and her partner have indeed recently come on our radar. But we are not able to move against them, without any evidence. You know, if Themyscira finally reached out to the United Nations, legal action could have been taken."

Hippolyta seemed to actually think on that for a moment. Then she sighed, "very well. We have been cut off from the gods anyways, it would be a good idea, especially to warn them about the coming tides of monsters."

"Really?" Diana tried and failed to not be surprised. Nor hide the tone of her voice. "Umm… then I will reach out to my liaisons within the United States Government. They will probably want some sort of trade agreement and like Atlantis it will be established as a self-governing special zone. Then we will need to-"

"Okay okay… I already agreed. We can talk about it in more detail later. For now we have much history to cover when your friend gets back." Hippolyta was regretting agreeing, but she felt it might just become beneficial in the future. No matter how bothersome the process was.
