Chapter 256: C219(2)
Zartan and his team stared ahead. Emerging from the Batwing were several figures, their presence tightening the tension in the air. Instinctively, muscles tensed, and fists clenched.
"We've been found!"
"They knew from the beginning!"
"How did they figure it out?"
Zartan's face was ashen, his gaze fixed on Batman and the others stepping out of the Batwng. His mind raced with panic as a creeping sense of dread clawed at him.
Then his eyes landed on a figure bound hand and foot, being dragged out of the plane.
It was Destro.
"We've been exposed! Every move we've made has been under their watch. No wonder…"
The realization hit Zartan like a brick. His shock quickly morphed into fury. "They captured Destro and forced the information out of him. Damn Destro!"
Seeing their captured leader explained everything. The Cobra organization's actions had been compromised, their every move anticipated.
It was clear now why the Batwing intercepted them so decisively.
Anton stood silently, observing the burning wreckage of the plane. His expression was unreadable as he watched the Cobra members who had jumped to safety.
Faint screams echoed from the smoldering wreck, a grim reminder of the soldiers trapped inside. There was no chance they would survive the flames.
The destruction, however, wasn't Anton's doing. The Batwing had been piloted by cyborg , allowing Batman to maintain his no-kill principle.
This sort of indirect action was a loophole often exploited in movies—Batman himself wouldn't kill, but he wouldn't stop others from doing so.
Anton's gaze swept over the Cobra operatives before him, quickly identifying each one.
The information provided by Hydra had been thorough, including profiles of all Cobra's top brass: Zartan, Firefly, Storm Shadow . They were second only to Destro and the Commander in rank.
Among them was the Baroness, Anna, who held a special status as the Commander's sister and Destro's lover. However, Anna's elevated position hadn't saved her—she had also been captured.
Anton thought coldly to himself, Soon, these accomplices of Anna will share her fate, or worse.
"Are you still planning to resist?" Anton asked, his voice calm and steady, his eyes locking on the box they carried.
"Batman!" Zartan sneered. "Don't think that capturing Destro means we'll give up! We're not done yet."
He turned to his companions. "Everyone, don't forget our mission—to release the nanoworm warheads in New York!"
Firefly's expression shifted the moment he saw Batman, now played by Anton. His excitement bubbled to the surface, his tone laced with exhilaration.
"I've never feared a superhero," Firefly said, his eyes alight with challenge. "The more dangerous the opponent, the greater the thrill!"
Storm shadow , however, was cold and calculating. He set down the box he carried and unsheathed two katana from his back. His masked face reflected a serious and focused demeanor.
As a trained ninja, Storm Shadow recognized the same energy in Batman—the presence of a master ninja.
Anton's gaze remained steady, falling on Zartan, Firefly, and Storm shadow . Despite his calm exterior, the intensity of his stare made their hair stand on end, as though they were being watched by a predator.
They were all too familiar with this feeling.
It was the same oppressive aura they'd felt from the Winter Soldier earlier on the plane. But this time, the threat from Batman was even more overwhelming.
"Attack!" Zartan growled, his voice desperate. "We have no choice but to fight!"
"You don't need to tell me!" Firefly retorted, already springing into action.
Firefly sneered, stepping forward and throwing several homemade bombs into the air.
BOOM!
The bombs detonated midair, lighting up the night like dazzling fireworks.
But Firefly froze in shock. He hadn't even seen what triggered the detonation.
Bang!
Before he could react, a massive force slammed into his chest, radiating pain through his entire body.
Crack, crack, crack!
The sound of bones breaking echoed as his body crumpled under the sheer force.
"Damn!" Firefly managed to think, his mind racing. His gaze locked onto a silver figure approaching him—a man who looked more machine than human.
"Cyborg …" he muttered before the realization hit him.
"Cyborg !"
In the next instant, Firefly's body flew through the air like a ragdoll, crashing heavily into the ground.
Crash!
The impact created a dent in the airport tarmac. Firefly lay motionless, bloodied and unconscious in the shallow crater.
"What?!"
The other members of the Cobra organization were stunned. Their eyes widened in disbelief as they took in the scene.
Firefly—arguably one of the strongest among them—had been taken out in a single blow.
Storm shadow's jaw clenched as he processed the situation. But he quickly snapped out of it, gripping his twin blades tightly.
Taking advantage of the brief lull in the fight, he lunged at cyborg with incredible speed.
Before storm shadow could strike, his attack was intercepted.
Thwip!
A green blur appeared between him and cyborg . It was a man in a green suit, armed with a bow and quiver—Green Arrow.
"Your fight is with me," Green Arrow said, his sharp gaze piercing like one of his arrows.
"You…" Storm shadow started, but didn't finish.
In a flash, Green Arrow spun his bow like a staff and struck storm shadow shoulder with precise force.
Thunk!
"Ahhh!" Storm shadow cried out, staggering back.
The sharp pain in his shoulder was enough to make him falter, but what truly unnerved him was Green Arrow's speed. Storm shadow hadn't even seen him move.
Zartan, watching from the sidelines, felt panic grip him.
This wasn't how he'd expected things to play out. He'd always been cunning and resourceful, preferring escape over direct confrontation.
While he had some combat ability, he knew he wasn't a match for opponents like these.
And now, his strongest allies—storm shadow and Firefly—were completely outmatched.
"It's like we're nothing more than a distraction to them," Zartan thought, a chill running down his spine.
"No!" Storm shadow suddenly shouted, his voice filled with desperation. "It's not over yet!"
He turned to Zartan, his teeth clenched and his eyes blazing with determination.
"Zartan, don't forget that he's still here!" Storm shadow growled, his voice laced with hope.
Zartan blinked, then realization dawned on him.
"Yes… there's still one more!" Zartan said, clutching at the last sliver of hope. "The Winter Soldier!"
The name brought a surge of renewed confidence to the Cobra operatives.
The Winter Soldier—a shadowy figure with a history of over 20 high-profile assassinations in the past 50 years. A relentless killer, feared and revered in equal measure.
For decades, if there had been only one Winter Soldier, it meant one thing:
He wasn't just a soldier.
He was a transformed superhuman, an extraordinary being forged for war.
If anyone could turn the tide of this battle, it was him.
The thought of the Winter Soldier's intervention was the lifeline Zartan and storm shadow clung to in the face of overwhelming odds.
