Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Keeping a Low Profile
When Jessica first appeared, Russell felt she looked familiar, but he couldn't quite place her.
However, the moment Jessica introduced herself, memories flooded Russell's mind.
Jessica Jones; a member of 'The Defenders', the wife of the hero Luke Cage, a street-level superhero and private detective with the ability to fly and superhuman strength.
Of course, at this point, Jessica hadn't married Luke Cage yet, she hadn't even met him.
Before coming to Hell's Kitchen, Russell knew he would inevitably encounter some superheroes here.
But he hadn't expected it to happen so soon.
"Mind if we sit here?"
After getting Jessica's permission, Russell and Allen sat across from her, observing this tall, sullen charismatic woman.
Unlike Heather's doll-like elegance, Jessica's aura carried a sense of melancholy and distance, perhaps a defense mechanism she used to protect herself.
"You're not from around here. What brings you to Hell's Kitchen?" After glancing at Russell and Allen, Jessica turned her attention back to her food, casually asking as she ate.
Before Russell could respond, Allen, ever the blunt one, shot back with a question, "How do you know we're not from here?"
Wasn't it obvious? If they were locals, they wouldn't have forgotten to bring money, nor would they have tried to pay with a car. Such behavior clearly marked them as outsiders.
"Because of your idiotic behavior earlier."
Jessica raised her head slightly, giving Allen a look that screamed, 'Are you stupid?'
"Let's not dwell on that. Jessica, you're like us, aren't you?" With that, Russell picked up a metal fork from the table and bent it in half with just two fingers.
When Jessica saw Russell effortlessly fold the fork, her indifferent expression turned serious, "Who are you, really?"
Jessica didn't directly answer Russell's question, but her actions spoke volumes.
She took the already bent fork from Russell and folded it again.
At this point, even the slow-to-catch-on Allen finally realized what was happening.
Jessica was also superhuman?
Had they been exposed?
Was Jessica with Hydra?
These sudden thoughts flashed through Allen's mind, and he immediately tensed up, ready to transform at any moment.
"Relax, it's not what you think." Russell placated.
Whether it was Allenʼs natural temperament or the effects of the Abomination serum making him more prone to anger and tension, he was like a firecracker, ready to explode at the slightest spark.
Though he heard Russell's warning, Allen didn't relax, remaining on high alert.
Allenʼs overreaction made Jessica's expression turn serious, and the atmosphere grew tense.
"He's a bit high-strung, but he means no harm." Russell explained, "We don't want to be your enemies, so let's all calm down, okay?" He said, expressing their goodwill.
Though if Jessica insisted on seeing them as threats, he'd have to abandon any plans of further interaction.
The appearance of any superhuman would attract intense attention from certain organizations.
S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra, Oscorp, the military... Russell wasn't ready to expose himself yet. He needed to stay hidden a while longer.
Perhaps sensing Russell's sincerity, Jessica finally relaxed, ending the standoff with Allen.
"You, go wait in the car." To prevent Allen from causing more trouble, Russell sent him outside.
"What's your goal? With your abilities, you could easily avoid unnecessary trouble."
The 'unnecessary trouble' Jessica referred to was their car nearly being stolen by thugs.
"We plan to settle here, but before that, we want to introduce ourselves to the neighbors to avoid future misunderstandings."
Though Russell didn't spell it out, Jessica, with her experience, understood exactly what he meant.
Thus, in Jessica's eyes, Russell went from a somewhat clueless superhuman to a troublemaking superhuman.
"That's not a wise choice. People like us should keep a low profile."
Unlike high-profile heroes like Iron Man and Captain America, street-level heroes like Jessica lacked public and government support. They didn't belong in the spotlight.
"After aliens descended from the sky, do you still believe in keeping a low profile?"
For street-level heroes without government backing, staying under the radar was their protection. But after the Chitauri invasion, staying hidden had lost its meaning.
If aliens could be exposed, revealing a few superhumans wasn't such a big deal.
"We're not the same. You clearly come from an organization. You've never experienced the helplessness of being alone, so you wouldn't understand."
Different environments lead to vastly different behaviors and personalities.
Russell, coming from a Hydra base, wasn't exactly flamboyant, but he wasn't one to stay hidden either.
Jessica, on the other hand, was the opposite. Despite her superhuman abilities, she preferred blending into the crowd, wishing to remain unnoticed. Her motto was to keep a low profile as low as possible.
Russell nodded and replied, "Maybe it's partly about background, but don't you think it's also a personal choice? If you choose to engage with others or form alliances, you won't be alone anymore. You won't have to experience that helplessness... You're used to being alone because you've never met others like you. But now, people like you exist..."
Russell's patience in explaining this to Jessica wasn't out of any ulterior motive.
He needed an ally like Jessica, someone familiar with Hell's Kitchen, and the potential 'Fate Points' she might bring.
As a superhero, albeit not a globally famous one, Jessica likely carried Fate Points as well.
Moreover, Russell was intrigued by the man behind Jessica, the one who had caused her so much pain...
