Chapter 16: Chapter 16: For the Village
Since Danzo did not deliberately hide his movements, the spies lurking inside Konoha quickly relayed this information to Sunagakure.
At that moment, in the desert along the Wind Country's border, a large number of ninjas wearing brown vests were gathering.
They wore brown headscarves, which were meant to protect them from the wind and sun.
Above the headscarves, they bore the forehead protectors engraved with the symbol of Sunagakure.
The leader of this group was none other than the newly appointed Fourth Kazekage—Rasa.
He had red-brown hair and wore a blue Kazekage robe. His arms were crossed over his chest, and the howling wind stirred his cloak.
After hearing his subordinates' report, Rasa furrowed his brows slightly.
"Shimura Danzo, what is that old man doing at Kikyo Mountain? Didn't we sign a peace treaty with Konoha?"
Rasa, though still young, was somewhat wary of this dark figure in the ninja world.
His words were immediately met with ruthless mockery.
"Can Sunagakure break its word, but Konoha still has to honor their promises?"
A man with blond hair, his upper body bare, appeared several dozen meters away from Rasa.
Unlike the seemingly frail Rasa, this man had a muscular build, as solid as steel, and the sand and wind made him seem even more imposing.
This man was the Fourth Raikage's candidate, A, from Kumogakure.
Beside him was another young man, a member of the new AB duo, who was the perfect jinchuriki holding the power of the Eight-Tails.
Upon hearing A's merciless mockery, the surrounding Sand ninjas were about to retort. But before they could speak, Rasa calmly interrupted, "Now is not the time to argue. The priority is how to deal with Shimura Danzo."
A scoffed derisively. "Both our armies are already assembled. What else is there to discuss? Should we not fight just because an old man over fifty and a few hundred ninjas are involved?"
He glanced toward the direction of Konoha's border, his eyes filled with ambition. "Not only should we fight, we should hit them hard and fast—strike before Konoha even has a chance to react!"
A exuded the bold and reckless spirit of Kumogakure—no hesitation, no overthinking, just act.
Rasa, facing the looming crisis, also needed a war to solidify his position.
The two of them quickly reached an understanding, which led to the current situation.
To gain Konoha's trust, Sunagakure sent another general, the famous "Scorch Release" Pakura, to the battlefield in the Water Country to put pressure on the enemy.
The AB duo, with their terrifying speed, led a small rapid strike team to join forces with Sunagakure, aiming to end the battle as quickly as possible.
Once they succeeded, they could carve a large piece of flesh from Konoha and drag it down from its pedestal as the strongest village in the ninja world.
For Sunagakure, this would finally bring them the rich territory they had long coveted.
Now, with the bowstring taut, there was no turning back.
Rasa's expression grew resolute, and he issued the command: "All troops, move out!"
"Yes!"
...
While supervising workers constructing underground bunkers, Danzo suddenly received an urgent report from the Root division.
"Sunagakure and Kumogakure have formally declared war on Konoha. Led by Kazekage Rasa, their allied forces have defeated our border defense units, and a large number of ninjas are retreating toward Kikyo Mountain!"
This news struck like a thunderbolt.
Danzo's prediction had come true!
Everyone looked at him in stunned silence, including Kakashi and Shisui.
Before this, no one, not even the higher-ups in the village or Konoha's strategists, had expected that Sunagakure would tear up the peace treaty so quickly and join forces with Kumogakure to launch an attack.
Moreover, the AB duo of Kumogakure had joined the battle.
It was important to note that the AB duo held immense significance for Kumogakure. One was the son of the Raikage, a candidate for the next Raikage, and the other was an important strategic asset—the Eight-Tails jinchuriki.
If anything happened to them, it would be a devastating blow to Kumogakure.
But Kumogakure did exactly that, catching everyone by surprise and making people admire their boldness.
In this situation, without any supporting intelligence, Danzo actually managed to correctly guess the enemy's deployment and even predicted the collusion between Kumogakure and Sunagakure. How could this not shock everyone?
Danzo's decisive action of pouring both his family's funds and the Root division's funds into fortifying the defenses was truly awe-inspiring. Even Shikai gave him a respectful glance.
Thinking about it, even if he had predicted the enemy's movements, Shikai himself would never have dared to be so bold as to commit all the resources to defense. If his predictions had been wrong, the wasted manpower and resources would have been catastrophic.
But Danzo did exactly that.
This boldness stemmed not only from the support behind him but also from his immense self-confidence and determination.
Feeling the respect from those around him, Danzo didn't feel pleased. He knew that the most dangerous moments were fast approaching.
"Tatsuma, send someone to notify the village immediately, and have them dispatch reinforcements as much as possible! It would be best to have Minato come to support us!"
Danzo issued his first command, specifically calling for Minato. No one else could restrain A other than him.
"Yes!"
Aburame Tatsuma immediately took the order.
Danzo then turned his gaze toward Kakashi and Shisui.
"You two, take people ahead to rally the fleeing soldiers and try to replenish the troops."
After a brief pause, he added, "But remember, do not advance too far forward. Do not engage the enemy, especially the AB duo!"
"I'll have the sensory-type ninjas from the Hyuga and Aburame follow your team. If you encounter the enemy's main force, retreat immediately!"
"Yes!"
The two of them took their orders, donned their masks, and disappeared with their team.
Then, Danzo turned to the mayor of Kikyo Town. "Do your best to calm the residents. Before the enemy arrives, transfer all the military supplies to the front lines, then lead them to a safe location. Focus on preserving the fighting strength."
"Yes!"
With each order given, Kikyo Mountain began to move like a well-oiled war machine. The tiger lying in wait was finally showing its fangs.
After all these arrangements, Danzo turned to Nara Shikai and asked, "Do you see any oversights or have any suggestions, Shikai?"
Shikai put away his fan and solemnly shook his head. "I have nothing further to add, Danzo-sama."
"Good!"
Danzo nodded heavily, stood up, and declared with a passionate voice, "Everyone, get busy! Let's reinforce the defenses while we still have time."
"Victory is ours!"
"For the village!"
"For the Will of Fire!"
"For our comrades!"
"Victory!"
"Victory!!!"
