Chapter 1: Prologue
Zhonghai Airport, China, January 1, 2021
Yang Ji was bored. She was sitting in the back seat of a limousine with a damn old man and his companions. In front of her was said old man, a man who looked to be around fifty years old. He had a great complexion, a valiant face, a well-developed muscular body, and jet-black hair that was neatly combed back. He was wearing a dark green Chinese robe, and his entire body exuded the meticulousness of someone of high rank with a haughty and cold temperament.
As for Yang Ji, she is a beautiful Asian woman in her early twenties, with a slim and slender build and a slightly above average height. She has long, inky black hair, usually tied in a loose braid with bangs reaching just below her eyebrows and two longer side bangs framing her face. Her eyes are obsidian yellow.
His usual attire consists of a white long-sleeved shirt, a black tie, black pants, and brown shoes. He also wears a long black trench coat over his outfit, mostly showing the tie and nothing else.
Next to them was another old man wearing a grey chang pao, leaning forward to fill the cups on the table. He had an ordinary appearance and grey hair, but his eyes were full of vigilance.
And finally on the other side was a woman of cold and calm beauty. She was voluptuous, more so than Yang Ji herself, with light brown hair and dark brown eyes, and a lightly made-up face to further accentuate her attractiveness. She was dressed in a purple shirt that barely contained her pronounced curves and a stretchy black pencil skirt, complementing it all with black heels. Her hair was tied into a high ponytail with a few strands left loose. She gave Yang Ji a cold look.
Yang Ji sighed. She had just arrived in China after who knows how long and the first thing she saw were those guys waiting for her right at the airport exit. They forced her into the limousine and there she was.
Yang Ji took a deep breath and looked out the window as the limousine drove forward. She could see the skyscrapers of Zhonghai in the distance and the cars passing by. Normally, she wouldn't have paid attention to anyone's words, let alone those of someone suspicious, but at that instant, caught in the middle of a constantly moving crowd, she felt a knot of tension that forced her to remain silent. She didn't want to cause a scene, though her discomfort was so palpable that it seemed to catch her breath.
The tension in the car was slowly increasing until the damned old man leaned over and handed him a cup of tea. Frowning, Yang Ji accepted out of politeness and waited until the old man poured him tea from his thermos.
The damned old man finally deigned to speak.
"Yang Ji, what brings you to China?" he asked solemnly.
Yang Ji rolled his eyes, Oh please we started off on the wrong foot, Yang Ji thought sarcastically.
Yang Ji smiled falsely politely and left the question hanging for a few moments until she said, "Excuse me, but do I know you?" she asked as she took a sip of her tea.
"I am Lin Zhiguo, the leader of the Yellow Flame Iron Brigade organization," Lin Zhiguo introduced himself. "These are my trusted subordinates, Gray Robe and Cai Ning," he said pointing at the old man and the beautiful woman. The woman nodded but the old man did not even bother to do so.
"As for your untimely arrival, we have found ourselves in a difficult situation. If you were a normal person, we wouldn't care. But you are far from that. I don't like beating around the bush. So ten cents, what is your purpose in showing up? Here in Zhonghai?" Lin Zhiguo repeated.
The first action that occurred to Yang ji was to ignore his question and remain silent and indeed she did.
Yang Ji sat there calmly, as if the tension in the air did not exist, leisurely enjoying her tea. Meanwhile, the other occupants of the limousine could not hide their impatience; light tapping of fingers, furtive glances, and sighs betrayed their anxiety. Yang Ji, in no hurry, calmly observed each of the people present before replying with a serene smile and a spark in his eyes, "It's none of your business."
"Little girl, don't fool yourself. Even if you have some achievements in your backpack, don't think you'll be safe with them alone!" Grey Robe suddenly warned her, displeased by the young girl's insolence.
Yang Ji just rolled her eyes and gave the stupid old man a bored look. Just some achievements in your backpack? That old man is really stupid. Yang Ji couldn't stand dealing with unintelligent people.
Lin Zhiguo waved his hands, interrupting Grey Robe.
"As an elder, why don't you give me some prestige first?" he asked.
"Why should you do that?" Yang Ji replied with an apathetic look.
Lin Zhiguo gritted his teeth in anger.
"You yourself know how much of a threat you are than anyone! Don't you want me to ignore you and allow you to live here?"
Yang Ji just rolled her eyes and gave a dispassionate look to all the occupants of the limousine who were giving his hostile glances. The next moment she said in a bored voice: "stop the car"
Lin ZhiGuo froze for a moment before his expression darkened and in a heavy voice he replied: "Young lady, don't think that..."
Whatever Lin ZhiGuo was about to continue died in his mouth immediately after Yang Ji locked his gaze on him.
The temperature in the limousine began to drop abruptly, as if winter had materialized in an instant. The air around Yang Ji took on a hazy appearance, with tiny beads of moisture crystallizing on nearby surfaces. The sudden chill made Lin Zhiguo's skin crawl, while Cai Ning involuntarily clung to his seat and Grey Robe breathed raggedly, his hands shaking. The oppressive atmosphere felt like an inescapable death sentence, laden with a silence that amplified the fear dominating their hearts.
It wasn't that they were cowards, but the scene unfolding before them was too terrifying. The pair of eyes that were once clear began to look deep into their souls, the cold and emotionless gaze he gave them made them instinctively want to jump out of the car.
"Don't make me repeat it again... Stop the car..." A cold voice rang out in the room. It was as if that voice came from hell itself.
Lin ZhiGuo immediately ordered the driver to stop the limousine at the nearest curb.
With that said and done, Yang Ji collected his bags from the trunk. Before leaving, he cast a wry smile at Lin ZhiGuo and his companions and said, "Thank you for the tea, it was delicious. However, let me warn you of something: when you address me, you will not do so by demanding things from me. You will do so by asking me for a price. Don't forget the most important thing about me, Lin ZhiGuo."
Yang Ji picked up her bags and turned around ready to leave. As she walked, she said one last thing that could be heard perfectly in the limousine:
"I'm a mercenary."
