Ethan and Jack began to suspect that something troublesome might have happened on V's end. They decided to send someone to investigate and see if they could locate V.
"Jack, you stay here. If V shows up, let me know, and I'll come back."
Ethan took the lead and said.
"Alright, whatever. You're the badass here, so go if you want."
Jack shrugged, standing up briefly before plopping back down, clearly unconcerned.
Ethan stepped out of the farmhouse. Instead of taking the battered off-road vehicle outside, he decided to run. Compared to that jinxed vehicle, Ethan was confident he could cover ground faster on foot. Besides, the off-road vehicle had taken a fair number of bullets during a previous skirmish. Some parts were likely damaged, and both rear tires were flat.
Kicking up a trail of dust, Ethan sprinted into the depths of the Badlands, following a desolate and cracked road. After just a few minutes, he spotted a rundown and desolate town up ahead.
"V is probably somewhere around here," Ethan muttered under his breath, heading toward the town.
As he approached, the sharp sound of gunfire echoed from within the town.
"Listen, Sheriff Andrews, my family's got connections. I'd advise you not to meddle in this business!"
At that moment, V was crouched behind her rattlesnake-patterned off-road vehicle, gripping a kinetic revolver. She yelled toward the sheriff, who stood in the road ahead, armed with a silver kinetic shotgun, the "Tactician."
Andrews, looking every bit like a Western gunslinger, had a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth as he strolled leisurely toward V's vehicle. From time to time, he fired a shot at the off-road vehicle, using the bursts of gunfire to intimidate the person hiding behind it.
"Back in the days of the Corporate Wars, they gave me a nickname—'Silver Shotgun.' Not many soldiers earned titles like that."
"And you? Just a small-time smuggler trying to sneak onto my turf. Leave the goods and your body here, and maybe I'll let this slide!"
From a vantage point on a nearby tower, Ethan observed the scene unfolding. He had a clear view of everything that was happening.
For reasons unknown, Sheriff Andrews had discovered V's smuggled cargo and decided to launch an attack on her.
At this stage, V lacked the strength to face Andrews—a battle-hardened special forces veteran who had survived the brutal Corporate Wars. He wasn't just any soldier; Andrews was an elite, a grizzled veteran granted an honorary title reserved for those who had killed many on the battlefield.
It wasn't hard to figure out why a man like Andrews ended up as sheriff in this godforsaken place. His influence straddled both sides of the law, enabling him to satisfy his insatiable appetite for power and profit. In other words, Andrews was both protector and predator. And now, his eyes were on V's smuggled goods, prompting his ruthless attack.
"Heh, I don't even need to ask. You've clearly cut ties with your family. Otherwise, there's no way you'd be running a high-risk job like this all by yourself," Andrews sneered, his words laced with venom.
His taunt hit home, and V's face darkened. He had exposed her situation with a single sentence, showing just how experienced he was.
But the current reality was grim—V knew she couldn't take Andrews on head-to-head. If she wanted to survive, she'd need to resort to desperate measures.
As V clenched her jaw, she resolved to use her last remaining grenade to blow up her beloved off-road vehicle, creating a diversion to escape. But just as she was about to act, she noticed something unusual—a figure had appeared behind Andrews.
Andrews, ever the seasoned soldier, instantly sensed someone approaching from behind. With a sharp roll forward, he quickly spun around on the ground, shotgun raised, aiming directly at the man behind him—Ethan.
"And who the hell are you? Get on the ground, hands behind your head, or I'll blow your brains out!" Andrews snarled, his expression twisted with menace. His finger tightened on the trigger, ready to fire at the slightest provocation.
"Easy there, Sheriff. I'm V's partner. I'm here to pick her up. Can we resolve this peacefully? There's no need for things to escalate further," Ethan replied in a calm, steady voice, hoping to defuse the situation.
Ethan preferred a diplomatic resolution if possible. After all, while Andrews was far from an upstanding citizen, he was still the sheriff tasked with protecting this border town.
But in the next instant, Andrews aimed his shotgun at Ethan's stomach and pulled the trigger, a mocking grin spreading across his face.
"Who the hell do you think you are? In this town, I make the rules!"
"If I say you die, you die!"
The shotgun blast, powerful enough to punch through steel, roared through the air and struck Ethan square in the abdomen. The impact shredded his white shirt into fragments, scattering it like confetti.
Yet, when the pellets hit Ethan's stomach, they ricocheted harmlessly to the ground. His cybernetic alloy torso had completely absorbed the impact, leaving him entirely unscathed.
Realizing Ethan was a cyber-enhanced individual, Andrews' face twisted further in fury. He began firing repeatedly, each shot more desperate than the last.
But no matter how many times he pulled the trigger, his shotgun failed to inflict any real damage. Each blast ricocheted off Ethan's body, the pellets clattering uselessly to the ground.
Undeterred, Ethan calmly walked toward Andrews, step by deliberate step, enduring the relentless assault without so much as a flinch. The unyielding presence of this impenetrable cyborg bore down on Andrews, who began to unravel under the suffocating pressure.
"Shit! If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me!" Andrews howled, his voice laced with madness.
He discarded his now-empty shotgun and reached into his belt pouch, pulling out a grenade. In a swift motion, he prepared to pull the pin, his expression twisted with desperation.
But just as he was about to unleash the grenade, a gunshot rang out from his right.
A single bullet tore through Andrews' temple, silencing him instantly. His body crumpled lifelessly to the ground, the grenade falling harmlessly from his hand.
Ethan turned his gaze to the source of the shot. Standing nearby, V lowered her revolver, the barrel still smoking.
With a calm yet resolute expression, V met Ethan's eyes.
