Curiosity of God

Chapter 57: Chapter 57 – Forbidden Love

Everyone's heads snap toward Ilina in shock, but she just maintains an amused smile. After a moment, she decides to elaborate.

"Of course, the idea would be to give the Empire a mix of true but inconsequential information, and misleading information that benefits us. In other words, Mizuki will just do exactly what he originally intended before Belmod earned his ire – act as our source of disinformation to the Empire. If done correctly, it helps the elves and the demi-humans." (Ilina)

The room falls silent for several seconds, and it feels like people are going to all start yelling at once. Jorah has a horrified expression, and even Elira looks confused. However, Darak suddenly sighs deeply.

"What kind of disinformation would you hope to spread, and how would it benefit us?" (Darak)

Most eyes in the room swivel to Darak in disbelief, but Ilina just smiles and nods appreciatively.

"For believability, I think the Empire needs to direct the information gathering. So, if they press Mizuki for information about us during a negotiation, I think he should offer to answer no more than three questions about us as part of any deal. If he also says that questions he doesn't know the answer to will still count, then their questions will be more predictable. So, first things first, what do you suppose those three questions would be?" (Ilina)

Jorah remains bewildered over the shift in conversation topic, but some of the other nobles look conflicted and thoughtful now. Darak, however, doesn't miss a beat.

"One of them would almost certainly relate to our numbers – how many elves there are to deal with in any invasion." (Darak)

Helena appears to recover, and taps her lips thoughtfully at Darak's response.

"I agree. I think they'll also ask about the location of the royal capital within our borders. Similarly, they might ask about any defensive weak points – what the path of least resistance to the capital is. However, they'd probably consider that a risky question, since as far as they know, Mizuki has only had one brief visit to our country. He shouldn't know anything like that." (Helena)

Jorah's eyes go wide, and he's looking around the faces of the other nobles frantically.

"Have you both gone mad!? You can't seriously be entertaining this id-" (Jorah)

Cara cuts Jorah off.

"I think it's likely they'd also ask about our military power, especially the defenses around Avalon." (Cara)

Alara gives Cara a puzzled look.

"Why would they expect Mizuki to know that? As Helena said, as far as they're aware, Mizuki has only had one brief visit to our country." (Alara)

"It'd be a fair assumption for them that Mizuki has met our Queen, or at least visited our royal capital, since he obtained that S-rank endorsement. That should impart some knowledge about our capabilities and defenses." (Cara)

Alara begins nodding thoughtfully. Meanwhile, Jorah is furiously glancing between Alara and Cara. But before he can speak, Ilina's voice cuts him off.

"I agree. These seem like the three most likely questions. How many elves live in the kingdom? Where is Avalon, and perhaps other cities, located within our borders? Finally, what is Mizuki's impression of our military capabilities and defenses, around Avalon and at large?" (Ilina)

Hmm....I think I see where this is going. I give a subtle smile to Ilina, who looks back at me expectantly. Oh? I guess I have a part to play in her mind.

"So, Princess Ilina...how would you like me to answer such questions? If they arise, that is." (Mizuki)

Ilina gives me a sly smile...I guess that was the right response.

"You should tell them the truth about our numbers – it will lend some credibility to your other answers. After all, it seems like we're past the point of worrying about that information enticing them to invade, and if we're lucky it will cause them to use a smaller invasion force. As for the location of the capital...if Alara doesn't mind, I suggest that we say it's near the western coast. Perhaps a day's march inland from Alara's planned coastal city." (Ilina)

Jorah lets out a squeal.

"Princess, that's out of the question! There's a big difference between them guessing our numbers and knowing them. If the Empire knew that their army alone is almost three times our population...it'd be disastrous! My Queen, surely you agree?" (Jorah)

Elira makes a conflicted expression, periodically giving Ilina nervous glances. After a moment, Elira sighs deeply.

"For once, I can empathize with your unease Jorah. However, if I set my emotions aside...I believe that Ilina is correct. The Empire knowing our numbers is a terrifying prospect because the knowledge that they could overwhelm us would entice them to invade. However, it sounds like they've made up their mind to invade anyway. I fail to see how hiding our numbers serves a purpose anymore." (Elira)

Jorah balks at Elira's response, and Alara takes the opportunity to pipe up.

"Ehem...Princess Ilina, I'm willing to accept your suggestion about telling the Empire that the royal capital is near my planned coastal city. That said...could you explain why we should do such a thing?" (Alara)

Alara stares at Ilina expectantly, but Ilina just keeps a neutral expression while she nods.

"Three reasons. First, it makes it much easier to predict their invasion route – they'll likely come from the neighboring coast. Second, the presence of the new train systems would make it easier to transport soldiers and supplies to the warfront if necessary. Third, since the proposed area is otherwise undeveloped...well..." (Ilina)

Ilina turns her attention towards me. Confusion flashes across several of the nobles' faces, and they begin glancing between us curiously. Ilina just keeps her eyes locked with mine, and I eventually let out a deep sigh. If the third reason is what I think, then I guess she wants me to explain.

"I believe the third reason is in case I need to destroy their army. Presumably, Princess Ilina wants to avoid...collateral damage." (Mizuki)

Realization dawns on everyone in the room, and I see a few pale faces. The group is silent for several moments, then Alara turns towards me hesitantly.

"H-Hey...Mizuki. I know it's largely undeveloped, but...you wouldn't ruin my brand new territory...right?" (Alara)

"No, you can relax, Alara. Honestly, if a whole fleet of Empire soldiers shows up on your coast, well...that's enough for my condemnation. If they ignore my warnings to leave, I'll just wipe them out before they step off their boats. That shouldn't severely damage your territory." (Mizuki)

Alara visibly relaxes and nods at me gratefully. Shortly after, I hear Darak.

"Hmm...I see. I suppose I can understand the advantages that offers us. However, Princess Ilina, what of the final question? The one about our military capabilities and defenses. How do you propose that Mizuki answers it?" (Darak)

Ilina smiles at Darak, as the others around the table all look between them in anticipation.

"I'd like Mizuki to bluff – tell them that, despite our numbers, we have such superior magic that the Empire wouldn't stand a chance in an all-out conflict with us. With any luck, convincing them of that may allow us to avoid war altogether." (Ilina)

A brief silence ensues, but it's quickly broken by a deep sigh from Tessa.

"With all due respect, Princess, and as much as I feel that our magic is superior to the humans', that's just not a practical expectation. It's not believable that simply having greater magic knowledge could wholly overwhelm such an absurd difference in military numbers. Numbers, I might add, that you're proposing that we freely confirm for them. So what, exactly, do you expect Mizuki to say to them to convince them of our military superiority?" (Tessa)

Ilina gives Tessa an amused smile and shrugs.

"Oh, I'm sure that Mizuki could fabricate a reasonable explanation of magic items or the like that would be useful for a war." (Ilina)

Uhm...excuse me? Mizuki's going to do what? I give Ilina a bewildered look, and it looks like Tessa is equally skeptical, but Helena snorts before we get a chance to speak.

"Far be it from me to doubt Mizuki's silver tongue, but I fail to see how this bluff gains us anything, Princess. Even if we give them a plausible explanation for why our military is superior, they're not going to believe it on word alone. Hell, while I'm being honest, why would they trust any of Mizuki's answers?" (Helena)

Helena makes good points. Honestly, I've been wondering the same thing. Ilina mentioned that telling the truth about the elves' numbers was supposed to lend some credibility to the other answers, but I don't quite understand that logic either. How is it supposed to be discerned as truthful if the Empire has no way to validate it?

I see a whisper of a smirk appear on Ilina's face, then disappear just as quickly, as though she's pleased that Helena expressed her disbelief.

"I think the Empire will believe these answers if certain...measures...are taken." (Ilina)

Helena raises her eyebrows skeptically, but Tessa interjects with a nervous expression.

"What kinds of measures?" (Tessa)

Ilina nods matter-of-factly, then turns to...Alto.

"Well, Alto...if you accompany Mizuki to such a negotiation with the Empire, and make a show of being surprised and outraged by his sharing of information, it will help sell our narrative. What do you think?" (Ilina)

Ilina raises her eyebrows questioningly at Alto, who seems unsurprised. I guess they've discussed this before. Alto steps forward and bows briefly towards Ilina, and I see a steely glint in her eyes when she raises her head.

"Of course, Princess, I'll help any way I can." (Alto)

Ilina nods appreciatively to Alto, but I'm not totally sold on the idea. Tessa seems to share my sentiments.

"With all due respect to Al-...to Lady Alto's acting skills, I hope you have more than that planned, Princess." (Tessa)

Tessa glances at Nina nervously as she speaks, and I have to suppress a chuckle. Even after all this, Tessa's still worried about Nina's warning to address Alto like an equal, huh?

"Surprisingly, I agree with Tessa, Princess. Also, didn't Mizuki threaten to destroy their capital if they attacked us? Won't they at least wonder why he would have done that if our military might is so formidable?" (Helena)

Personally, I hadn't considered Helena's point before now, but...it has merit. My prior actions might put this narrative about the elves' military capabilities in jeopardy. However, an unperturbed Ilina glances between Tessa and Helena with a thoughtful expression.

"Naturally, Lady Tessa, I won't rely on Alto's contributions alone. Lady Helena, as for your question...yes, you're correct. However, we could use that to our advantage. Mizuki could say that he made that threat knowing full well how formidable we are, and he merely wanted to prove to us that his party condemned such hostility from the Empire. He could say that he feared earning our ire if he was associated with any such attack from fellow humans." (Ilina)

My eyes widen in surprise, and the others seem similarly impressed by Ilina's proposal. Yeah...she's right, that could work as an explanation. However, that's only if they're otherwise convinced that the elves could be a threat. As if sensing my criticisms, Ilina continues on.

"Furthermore, Mizuki should tell them about the magic items known as trains, along with whatever other war-like items he decides to make up stories about, but say that we built them. If nothing else, that should serve as proof of our magic capabilities far surpassing theirs, and act as a deterrent to invasion.

"Of course, I don't expect them to take him at his word over something so remarkable. So, I suggest that Mizuki tells them the location of Alara's coastal train system, so that they can covertly surveil it by ship and see for themselves." (Ilina)

Almost every jaw in the room drops, including mine. Jorah is quick to voice his thoughts.

"Princess!? Are you suggesting that we practically invite the Empire to our shores!?" (Jorah)

I mean...normally I'm not on Jorah's side, but this is an exception. That certainly seems like what Ilina is suggesting, and I have to agree that it's kind of absurd. Ilina, however, manages to keep a straight face.

"Calling it an invitation is a little dramatic, but...yes. The Empire surveilling us by ship is nothing new – we deal with that threat constantly. In all likelihood, they'd eventually notice the strange metal railway on their own. At least this way, we get to control the narrative around the train. Hopefully, the train can serve as indirect evidence that an important settlement like the royal capital is nearby, and that our capabilities are far beyond their comprehension." (Ilina)

Huh...I guess I hadn't considered that the Empire might already be probing their borders by ship. In retrospect, it makes sense of course. The Empire has made it clear they've long wanted more information about the Elven Kingdom, and coastlines away from major settlements seem like an easy target. The better question is, how have the elves managed to thwart those efforts for so long? After all, roughly a quarter of their coastline isn't managed by any nobles.

My thoughts are interrupted by a shrill cry from Jorah. He's staring at Elira, whose brow is furrowed as if she's immersed in troubling thoughts.

"Whaaa!? My Queen, surely you aren't considering allowing such a course of action. I confess, while I don't agree with some of your other decisions regarding...Mizuki...today, I at least understand and accept my Queen's reasons. But inviting our enemies to our very borders, near a key secret such as the train...the danger seems incomparable to me!" (Jorah)

Elira's expression remains strained for several more seconds, then she sighs deeply.

"You're right, Jorah. It is dangerous..." (Elira)

Relief floods Jorah's expression, but it's short-lived.

"However, there's no escaping danger at this stage, given the Empire's movements. More importantly, the royal navy has had to keep dutiful watch over our coastline in the undeveloped territories, as have each of you over your own coastlines, and it's always been a struggle. At the very least, Ilina's proposal buys us time while the Empire sends ships to investigate, and it will let us know exactly where to expect their ships for once. Truthfully, I'm inclined to support this idea, risky though it may be." (Elira)

I'm expecting Jorah to immediately squeal in disbelief, as he usually does. Instead, I see his expression twisted with internal conflict, until a hand clasps his shoulder firmly – Zakariah, his son. Jorah looks over his shoulder in surprise, and the two lock eyes for a moment. Zakariah gives a firm nod, and Jorah turns away with a resigned look on his face, eyes cast down to the roundtable.

While I'm trying to process that unexpected emotional development of Jorah's, Tessa turns a piercing gaze towards me.

"And what do you think of this, Mizuki? What about your precious train near Alara's coastline? Are you not concerned that, once the Empire learns of its location and capabilities, they will make a move on it in some way? It's not as though it's heavily guarded." (Tessa)

Tessa studies my reaction intently, as all the others in the room turn their gazes to me. Yeahhh...I'm not thrilled about the idea of alerting the Empire to the existence of trains. However, it's not like they can do much. The elves will surely keep a watchful eye on the Empire's movements, and I can step in at any point if their actions become a serious concern. Still, I shouldn't entirely dismiss the potential drawbacks of Ilina's proposal...hmm.

After a few moments of contemplating Tessa's question in awkward silence, I notice Ilina wearing an expectant expression as she watches me. Well, based on our discussions last night, I can pretty easily guess what that's about...

I let out a deep sigh and shrug towards Tessa.

"I'm not thrilled about the idea, naturally, but Princess Ilina has my trust. If she thinks this is the best course of action, then I'll support it. Besides, if I'm not going to let you all tamper with the trains, then they're sure as hell off-limits for the Empire. You all can see to it that I'm warned if they target the train. I'd kill them down to that last witness, and explain away all the dead soldiers as the consequences of antagonizing the elves' military. Right, Princess?" (Mizuki)

I see a thin smile lingering on Ilina's lips as I turn and posit the last question. She directs a composed expression at me and nods politely.

"Yes, I think that's a fine idea. Of course, I appreciate your confidence in me, Mizuki." (Ilina)

Much to my surprise, Ilina finishes her statement with the slightest of bows. So formal, Ilina! I really hope I don't develop a kink for this...something tells me she wouldn't be into it.

As the room falls into a surprised silence after Ilina's deferential response, my less-than-noble thoughts about Ilina are interrupted by the sound of Helena clearing her throat.

"Ehem...so I suppose the train would serve as a kind of weak evidence for Mizuki's claims about our military capabilities and the royal capital's location, but what about our numbers? If we've been as careful as I hope, they shouldn't have a way to verify that info on their own." (Helena)

Ilina gives a conceding nod to Helena, then turns towards Tessa.

"Yes, you're correct. I think the best course of action is to provide Mizuki with a physical document verifying that information...ideally one that won't be inherently suspicious. Tessa, as the overseer of the Elven Magic Academy and its library, can you think of a book that would contain such information? One that is innocuous enough that Mizuki could have believably found it in a normal elven library and wanted to read it?" (Ilina)

Realization dawns on the faces of Helena and others, as they presumably deduce what Ilina is suggesting. Tessa nods hesitantly.

"Perhaps..." (Tessa)

She pauses briefly, wearing a conflicted expression.

"...however, it is an abridged history of the noble territories in the kingdom, including population growth. While that is innocuous enough for common circulation within our kingdom, it contains other information that we wouldn't want the Empire to have. I know of less sensitive books, like one that covers our people's changing flour production needs over time, but it would hardly make sense for Mizuki to have read such a thing casually." (Tessa)

Ilina purses her lips thoughtfully for several breaths before giving a decisive nod.

"That should be fine, I think. If needed, Mizuki can just show them an excerpt from the book that confirms our population size. There's no need for him to give them the book or reveal any of its other specific contents." (Ilina)

Following Ilina's declaration, Tessa turns towards me anxiously, and her piercing eyes lock with mine. The sentiment is clear...she wants confirmation directly from me that I can be trusted with something she deems to be sensitive. I nod at her calmly.

"Of course, Lady Tessa, it is exactly as Princess Ilina says. I will make absolutely certain that the Empire is only presented with the information deemed appropriate by this council." (Mizuki)

At my reassurance, Tessa seems to visibly relax. My eyebrows involuntarily jerk upward in surprise at the sight. Did she seriously just take my word for that? Tessa Uril? Is she...feeling okay?

While I'm sorting through my existential crisis over her behavior, Tessa turns back to Ilina and nods approvingly. Ilina smiles and sweeps her eyes over the rest of those gathered.

"Well then, to summarize...Mizuki will do his best to arrange negotiations with the Empire to end their enslavement of the demi-humans. If successful, he will offer up to three pieces of information about our kingdom as collateral. Likely, our numbers, the location of our capital, and our military prowess, the latter two serving as disinformation. To verify this information, he will share an excerpt of the book Tessa has recommended, and a surveillance plan for the train on our coast. Are there any questions or points of concern about this short-term plan?" (Ilina)

I unconsciously give Ilina an incredulous look. Uhm...yeah? This hardly feels like a settled plan of action to me. Of course there are questions! Apparently I'm not alone in my sentiment.

"Ilina, dear...I'm not opposed to any of the details we've discussed, but that's quite a lot of unaddressed 'ifs', even in the short-term. What if the Empire doesn't want to negotiate with Mizuki, or tries to kill him on sight? It's my understanding that the humans are unaware of his or Lady Nedonera's true abilities. Also, should Mizuki involve demi-human representatives in the negotiations? What if the Empire asks for something or takes actions outside what we've discussed? Should we include more conventional defensive measures, now that we're under the threat of invasion? We have not considered any of this." (Elira)

I'm not too worried about most of Elira's concerns. I have an idea for how to arrange the negotiations that I think has a decent chance of success. Regardless, the Empire doesn't pose a threat to me, and I can always get heavy-handed, if needed. It's true that I'd prefer not to reveal my abilities to cow them, but I can always out Nina as an Elder Dragon as a half-measure.

I'm also sure that I can BS my way through any unexpected questions the Empire might raise. If possible, I'd phrase my answers to also reveal one of the types of disinformation we've just discussed.

Elira's question about involving other demi-human representatives...that's a good one, though. I'd hate to exclude demi-human leaders, but Zara will already be there, and their presence might prove troublesome. Depending on the timeline of these negotiations, it may be hard to explain how we initially escaped, rallied such representatives, and returned to the Empire so quickly. Similarly, it would limit our options if we needed to explain how we moved through their country undetected. That's all in addition to generic concerns about recruiting them, how they'd act at such a negotiation, and how I would ensure their safety.

Before I can share my thoughts with Elira and the others, Darak's voice rings out.

"I agree with our Queen. I'd also like to add that this situation will require ongoing, in-depth discussion among this council as new information is gathered. How will we facilitate that? Alara and Cara can be quickly reached by train, but the rest of us cannot. If we remain in Avalon for the next few weeks or more, that will hinder managing our own territories and preparing them for potential invasion." (Darak)

There's a murmur of assent from the others, and all eyes come to rest on Ilina. She pauses thoughtfully for a moment before responding, glancing at me.

"We should, of course, make standard defensive plans, which we can discuss in due course. As for potentially unexpected elements of Mizuki's arranging of the negotiations with the Empire, or their questions or demands during it...all we can do is make contingencies and trust Mizuki to handle any other surprises in the moment. Does anyone have any other eventualities they want to plan for?" (Ilina)

As Ilina scans the room for responses, she's met with silence and conflicted expressions. I glance at Jorah, expecting him to decry the implication that I be trusted, but he's just staring into space despondently. After several moments, Helena clicks her tongue and looks at me in exasperation.

"Well, do you have a plan for arranging these negotiations without the Empire trying to execute you on sight?" (Helena)

I give Helena a confident nod.

"I do. And if it fails, a demonstration of power should put them in a chattier mood. That can be done without exposing myself...by revealing Nina's identity, if necessary." (Mizuki)

"Fufufu...oh yes, I'd be happy to teach them some manners!" (Nina)

After glancing between us, Helena sighs deeply, then makes a conciliatory gesture. I guess that answer works for her. I catch Darak staring at me out of the corner of my eye, and turn to him questioningly.

"Mizuki, what do you plan to do if the Empire asks you for information that we haven't discussed?" (Darak)

"I'll freely provide any harmless information that's relevant, and I can always claim ignorance if it's believable. If at all possible, I'll infuse some of the disinformation that we discussed into these alternative answers in a way that doesn't arouse suspicion. However, it hopefully doesn't come to that. I intend to try and contextually steer them toward asking the questions that we discussed." (Mizuki)

Darak widens his eyes in surprise, and I hear Helena snort.

"Fancy yourself a master manipulator, huh, Mizuki?" (Helena)

Sarcasm? I guess I shouldn't be surprised...it's Helena. I direct a knowing smirk back at her...she really brings it out of me.

"Well, as I've been told by this council before, the elves' intelligence is vastly superior to humans', right? Since you all remained convinced that I was a timid, magic-less servant, believing every excuse I gave you and acting in accordance with my expectations, I'm sure I'll fare just fine against a group of dumb humans." (Mizuki)

Shock registers on the faces of most of the nobles following my snarky retort, and I see Ilina roll her eyes in exasperation. However, a sharp bark of dry laughter erupts from somewhere in my periphery, causing everyone to snap their attention towards the source. To my immense surprise, it's Tessa Uril.

She's looking down at the conference table with a bitter smile, shaking her head as she chuckles dryly. The sight is enough to make my jaw drop, and she seems to catch my incredulous expression.

"Don't look so surprised, Mizuki. I'm not so childish as to lash out when faced with my own errors. And that's exactly what my mis-estimation of you has been – a monumental failure in judgement. I'm lucky that such an oversight wasn't irreparably disastrous. I have no right to be indignant about your remark." (Tessa)

Well...I'm not sure whether to pinch myself or go straight to passing out. Judging by the others' faces, they feel pretty much the same way. Everyone except for Ilina, that is. As I glance at her following Tessa's comment, she's wearing a barely suppressed smug smile. If she expected this kind of behavior from Tessa, then she's even smarter than I gave her credit for. Personally, I'm downright disturbed by the way Tessa has been behaving since finding out about me.

Eventually, Ilina interrupts the shocked silence.

"Ehem...well, it seems that those concerns have been addressed. Darak, your concern about meeting logistics is simple to address. Mizuki, would you be willing to teleport the other nobles to and from their territories as needed for these meetings? I'd greatly appreciate it." (Ilina)

I raise my eyebrows at Ilina, confused by the showy wording of the request. Still, I nod agreeably, and Ilina returns an appreciative smile.

"Wonderful...does anyone have objections?" (Ilina)

Most of the nobles shake their heads, and we all eventually look towards Jorah. Naturally, we expect him to object to anything involving me. Astonishingly, not only has Jorah remained silent, but he seems completely oblivious to our stares, still looking off despondently. His son, Zakariah, notices everyones' gazes and steps forward with a light bow towards me.

"Lord Mizuki, you truly don't mind personally attending to something as mundane as transporting us to meetings?" (Zakariah)

I widen my eyes in surprise at his overly respectful attitude.

"Uhm...no, not at all. Princess Ilina is the one who asked, after all." (Mizuki)

Without missing a beat, Zakariah nods appreciatively, though my comment about Ilina raises a few eyebrows around the table.

"In that case, the Abel house gratefully accepts." (Zakariah)

After saying his piece, Zakariah retreats back to his position behind the still absentminded Jorah. Meanwhile, I try to pick my jaw up off the floor. Did homicidal rage towards humans skip a generation in the Abel household?

My shock is quickly interrupted, however, as Elira turns to face me.

"Well, I'm pleased to see that everyone is in such a cooperative mood today. After all, Mizuki has spent this meeting politely acting as a source of information for us, sharing his personal secrets, and graciously agreeing to most of our demands and suggestions. His group has even offered to protect our country from war, and now he's agreed to personally transport you all between the palace and your homes to aid our country's preparations. So, I think it's only fair that the elves return that spirit of alliance. Mizuki, is there anything that you'd like to ask of this council?" (Elira)

Everyone, especially me, looks at Elira in surprise, and Jorah manages to be stirred from his previously near-catatonic state. Even Ilina looks as though she wasn't expecting her mother's offer. I guess she's not omniscient after all.

I notice Elira watching me expectantly, and several of the others in the room soon join her. They're all obviously waiting for my answer. I bow politely at Elira.

"That's very kind of you, Queen Elira. I'd like to reiterate that our assistance isn't contingent on such a show of reciprocity from this council. However, we do appreciate the consideration. So..." (Mizuki)

I turn to Alto, who catches my gaze and raises her eyebrows questioningly. I can't really think of anything that I'd like to ask for, but Alto will know best if there's something that Eden might need.

"Alto, is there anything that you advise I ask about?"

Alto purses her lips thoughtfully for a moment, then nods.

"I believe that now would be a good time to discuss the matter of Percivil." (Alto)

My eyes widen in surprise. Of course, how could I forget about Percivil!? I told him I'd check with Elira to see about getting him some kind of work visa to open an enchanted item shop in Eden. Whoops.

I direct a grateful smile at Alto.

"Oh, you're right! Thank you, Alto, that slipped my mind in all the commotion." (Mizuki)

I return my gaze to Elira, who is watching me with an expectant but confused expression. I also notice Alara staring at me hopefully...I guess she's got an inkling of what this is going to be about.

"Queen Elira, it's my understanding that your country sometimes grants permits to members of other non-human races, which allow them to travel and conduct business within your borders. I was wondering if you'd consider granting a similar kind of permit to a dwarf friend of mine...Percivil.

"He'd like to open an enchanted blacksmithing shop in Eden. Would it be possible for him to receive official permission to own property and conduct business in the Elven Kingdom for that purpose? While I'd consider it a personal favor, it's my understanding that this is something that would also greatly benefit your kingdom." (Mizuki)

Elira's eyes widen as I watch her expectantly, but before she can respond, there's the sound of chairs scraping and hands slapping on the table. Then, several incredulous voices overlap at once.

"You convinced a dwarf to come here and make weapons on demand!?" (Helena)

"Wait, when you say here, do you mean Eden? Will Lady Alara's territory be getting its very own source of enchanted items!?" (Darak)

"You want a non-elf to own property in our kingdom!?" (Jorah)

"Seriously, Mizuki!? Percivil reconsidered!?" (Alara)

I blink repeatedly, fixing the nobles with a blank expression for several moments.

"Uhm...I believe the answer to all of your questions is...probably?" (Mizuki)

Ignoring their shocked expressions, I turn to Elira.

"Queen Elira...your decision?" (Mizuki)

Elira's eyes slide away from me thoughtfully, her lips pursed as she sits in contemplative silence for a while.

"I believe that can be arranged...with some conditions." (Elira)

I raise my eyebrows.

"Of course. What conditions might those be?" (Mizuki)

A small smile appears on her lips.

"To ensure that such an unprecedented level of allowance for a non-elf truly benefits the entire kingdom, and not just Alara's territory, this Percivil must agree to reserve 20% of his blacksmithing efforts in the kingdom for royal requests, and at least another 20% for requests from territories other than Alara's.

"He must also accept elven apprentices to learn his craft and expedite the work unrelated to enchantments. Finally, he'll have to pay taxes just like elven businesses. Would that be acceptable?" (Elira)

Hmm...that seems fair, though it's not my decision to make.

I use magic sense to scan for Percivil's location, considering making a request for him to come downstairs to answer Elira's questions directly. However, I'm surprised to find that he's down in the valley.

Huh, I guess he left the mansion for something. No matter...

I bow appreciatively at the expectant Elira.

"I believe those are quite reasonable conditions, but I naturally cannot accept the offer for Percivil. However, I will pass along your conditions and let you know of his decision as promptly as possible, Queen Elira." (Mizuki)

Elira nods.

"Very well. I look forward to his decision." (Elira)

She quickly turns towards the nobles, including a reinvigorated Jorah who looks like he's about to start another round of hysterics. Elira addresses them with a stern voice.

"I'm sure that many of you have concerns, so let me quickly address a few points. First, keep in mind that this is, first and foremost, a favor to our kingdom's valuable ally, Mizuki, and not something meant to appease you all. Second, I will not be insisting where Percivil sets up such a blacksmithing shop or lives. It should be obvious that his presence would benefit our kingdom too much to risk alienating him over something so trivial.

"Finally, given my stipulation that at least 20% of his efforts go towards benefitting those in your territories, I won't hear any dissent about unfairness. I also won't be insisting which of your territories he contributes those blacksmithing efforts to, so...you'd be wise to play nice. Now, with these things in mind, are there any other, reasonable concerns?" (Elira)

Elira sweeps her gaze over those at the table, her eyebrows raised expectantly.

Some of the nobles who have been supportive of Eden, like Darak, Helen, and Cara, relax and let out small smiles upon hearing the details of the arrangement. Tessa frowns, but merely shakes her head with dejected acceptance when Elira's gaze lands on her.

Meanwhile, Alara is staring at me with an excited gleam in her eyes, no doubt thrilled about this revelation after Percivil turned her original offer down.

However, one proud voice, a champion of fairness and noble intentions, really, rings out.

"M-my Queen, regarding giving a non-elf acquaintance of his such freedom within our kingdom, I don't think th-" (Jorah)

Elira cuts Jorah off, her tone becoming flippant.

"Wonderful! It seems there are no more relevant opinions to be heard on the subject of Mizuki's request. In that case, I hereby declare this matter settled." (Elira)

Jorah stutters in shock while several of the nobles try to suppress amused smiles, and I hear Nina chuckling mischievously next to me. Even I raise my eyebrows at the display.

Damn...that's some serious emotional damage. I guess Elira's out of patience with Jorah, not that I blame her. He's been pretty goddamn annoying today.

Jorah looks like he's about to protest, but his son, Zakariah, quickly clasps his shoulder and shakes his head disapprovingly. Seeing this, Jorah remains quiet, his expression equal parts solemn and frustrated, and an awkward silence falls over the room.

After several moments, Elira clears her throat.

"Ehem...well then. As planned, we have now discussed the trains and informed you all about the Empire and Mizuki's...nature. So, let's move on to finalizing the details of our kingdom's initial security measures. How each of your respective territories will be preparing and cooperating in the face of this threat from the Empire." (Elira)

There's a round of assent at the table, some of it begrudging. However, before further discussion can start, Ilina steps forward, her voice polite but firm.

"Actually, my Queen...there's something else important that we should discuss with the nobles today." (Ilina)

Elira's eyebrows raise slightly, her expression thoughtful, but then her face becomes tense.

"Oh? I confess, I'm not aware what you're talking about. What is it you think needs to be discussed right now?" (Elira)

Ilina smiles at her mother apologetically. For a brief moment, her face becomes hesitant, but then she seems to gather her resolve and meets Elira's gaze evenly.

"I believe now is the best time to inform the nobles about my engagement." (Ilina)

The room falls deathly silent, and I watch as Elira's face pales, along with the faces of those who already know to whom Ilina is engaged, but weren't warned of her intentions to reveal it. Namely, King Dargo and Cara.

Meanwhile, slightly caught off guard by the suddenness of this change in topic, my heart begins to race, its pounding reverberating in my ears. There's no turning back now...her people are really going to know the truth about us.

At first, the uninformed nobles around the room all share shocked expressions. But then, their reactions begin to diverge. Tessa and Helena wear confused expressions. Meanwhile, Darak's face remains shocked, but...he slowly turns to stare at me, disbelief overtaking his expression. I stare back at him blankly, listening to the thumping of my own loud heartbeat.

Whelp. I guess he's figured it out.

However, before Darak speaks, Jorah's voice echoes in the room. He's staring at Ilina with an expression that's equally bewildered and excited.

"Princess, you have chosen a husband!? And at such a young age! W-well...I...wait, is it possible that you heeded my advice about Zakariah? I confess, this seems rather sudden..." (Jorah)

Tessa, Helena, and the others caught off guard by Ilina being engaged give Jorah incredulous looks, then glance between a stony-faced Ilina and a bewildered Zakariah, as though wondering if there's any truth to Jorah's inference. Meanwhile, Cara, Alara, Elira and others who know about or suspect my relationship with Ilina wear dumbfounded expressions, staring at Jorah in pained silence.

Yeahhh...he really is an idiot.

Zakariah clears his throat awkwardly, then speaks quietly to Jorah.

"Ehem...Father, you are mistaken. Please be more careful with such declarations in the future..." (Zakariah)

Jorah looks back at Zakariah in surprise, then back at Ilina in confusion. However, Dargo, seemingly the first of those 'in the know' to recover, clears his throat as he directs a nervous gaze at Ilina.

"Ehem...Ilina, dear...is this really the best time or place for such a thing?" (Dargo)

His gaze is insistent...tense...as though he's trying to communicate his concern about Ilina blindsiding them with this reveal. Elira seems to finally compose herself, her tone becoming a bit stern as she glares at Ilina.

"Yes, Ilina, I agree with your father. There's no need to discuss family matters so publicly yet. After all, you are young and there's no rush." (Elira)

Ilina stares back evenly at them both, her gaze unwavering. Her expression seems thoughtful, like she's deciding on the best response. However, before she can respond, Tessa interjects with an incredulous voice, her eyes narrowing at the royal family suspiciously.

"My King, my Queen...with all due respect, I disagree. Princess Ilina's comment implies that she is already unofficially engaged. Since her marriage is something that significantly affects our kingdom, and the balance of power within it, there is absolutely a need to discuss it. Especially so, since we were never informed of any serious courtship involving our new First Princess." (Tessa)

There's a round of assent from the nobles, except Alara, Cara, and Darak, the latter of which is still staring at me with a shocked expression. Helena directs a curious gaze at Ilina.

"I also find it...concerning...that such a courtship has progressed so far without any of us knowing. Princess, have you taken a liking to one of Cara's or Darak's extended family, and they've kept it a secret from the rest of us? I confess, if you're being courted by any normal elf, they will not live long enough to see you rise to power. So an engagement seems...unnecessary, given your age." (Helena)

All eyes in the room turn to Ilina, as Elira's and Dargo's faces tense. They both glance at one another, as if trying to strategize a way to divert this line of conversation, but Ilina speaks up before they can.

"Mother, Father...I apologize for not warning you about this beforehand, but...I've already made up my mind. More time won't change your concerns, only action will, so I'm going to tell them." (Ilina)

The king's and queen's faces widen in shock, but Ilina just nods apologetically. Before they can respond, she turns away from her parents and sweeps her gaze over the nobles, calm and firm. But, I can see a trace of nervousness in her eyes as they settle on Helena.

"To answer your question, Lady Helena – no, I'm not betrothed to a member of Darak's or Cara's extended family, nor a common elf. Instead, the person I'm engaged to...is Mizuki." (Ilina)

The entire room falls deathly silent, and my eyes begin to scan the faces of the nobles as my body tenses. Everywhere I look, there are faces of immense shock. As the silence in the room drags on, all the eyes of those present, from escorts to nobles, slowly begin to focus on me.

Feeling the mood shifting, my gaze naturally drifts to Jorah, who I expect to have a rabid outburst at any moment. However, to my great shock, he's just staring at me silently with a horrified expression – eyes wide and unblinking, jaw slack, and face ghostly pale. If Zakariah were to wave in front of his face, I doubt he'd even notice.

Shortly after, the clattering of a chair is heard as Jorah falls over onto the floor, fainting. Zakariah and his aides quickly move to check on him, but everyone else is still frozen in shock as Ilina's revelation sinks in, uncaring about the fact Jorah is now out cold.

Eventually, a cold, feminine voice is the first to echo in the room.

"That's absolutely unacceptable." (Tessa)

I glance towards Tessa in surprise, as do several others in the room. She's leveling Ilina with an icy glare, but Ilina is meeting her gaze evenly. Ilina's eyes narrow.

"On the contrary, accepting it is exactly what I expect from you all. Your future queen has made her decision, and you are in no position to dictate who I marry." (Ilina)

Most in the room, me included, widen our eyes in shock at Ilina's cold rebuttal. Tessa, however...her eyes narrow, almost threateningly. Yet, instead of responding to Ilina, she turns to me, her demeanor becoming less hostile but her tone strained to maintain some semblance of respect.

"With all due respect, Mizuki, is this what you consider letting us run our own country? Trying to collect our Princess into your harem? Positioning yourself at the head of our kingdom's power structure?" (Tessa)

I raise my eyebrows.

After Tessa found out about my abilities, I thought she'd been acting strange, maybe even becoming more accepting of my presence. But...I guess that was just wishful thinking.

I grit my teeth at her mention of me 'collecting' Ilina, fighting against my rage at the implications, but I know I can't afford to lose my temper. Instead, I purse my lips thoughtfully, trying not to frown disapprovingly at Tessa. I know this requires a more...diplomatic...touch.

"You're mistaken, Lady Tessa. First of all, your tone and words imply that I'm relegating your queen-to-be as some footnote among a slew of trophied lovers. That's not the case. Other than Nina, she would be my only wife, as I've already promised Nina and Ilina.

"It's also my understanding that polygamy isn't frowned upon in the Elven Kingdom, and I'm sure you don't mean to imply that Ilina having an Elder Dragon as a sister-wife is somehow degrading to her status.

"More importantly, I'm not 'taking' Ilina, as you say. I love her, I asked her to marry me, and she agreed of her own volition. That's it. I have zero interest in being a prince or king or anything else. My only goal in our engagement is to be with Ilina, and my desire to minimize my interference in your country's affairs is genuine." (Mizuki)

I level Tessa with a calm but firm glare as I finish my rant, daring her to refute me. I've got a stack of evidence to demonstrate my goodwill to their country, and I doubt she'd like to see how far I'm willing to go to prove how important Ilina is to me. If she thinks that my actions so far count as interference, she's in for a rude surprise if she pushes me...

I see Cara wince at my emphatic declaration of not wanting more wives, but I can't worry about her feelings right now. Tessa, meanwhile, snorts in response to my rant, her silver eyes flashing in annoyance as she struggles to maintain her newfound cordial attitude towards me. However, before she can respond, Darak interrupts her with a cough, seemingly nervous about what she might say.

"Ehem...uhm, Mizuki, I'm sure that nobody here means to contest your feelings or the sincerity of your intentions where Princess Ilina is concerned." (Darak)

Darak pauses to glance at Tessa pointedly, who simply glares back unabashedly.

"That said, I think we're all just a bit...surprised...by this development. I can believe that your proposal to Ilina doesn't stem from a desire to gain power in our country, but surely you see that the two are fundamentally linked? Even if you want no part of it, publicly marrying a princess, even outside the line of succession, carries inescapable influence and obligations among our people. Drastically more, for the husband of the future queen." (Darak)

I sigh internally. Of course, I'm not naive...I know that. But it's not like I'm the one who has a problem accepting the influence and obligations that would come with marrying Ilina. It's the elves' damn racist attitudes. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sure if one of the human kings would be more inclined to take an elf as their queen, but it's still racist even if everyone on the damn planet is doing it.

I direct an empathetic gaze at Darak, but I feel a gravity spell take hold over the room before I can respond. It's strong enough to make everyone but me, Nina, and physical enhancers struggle to stay upright.

"Enough!" (Ilina)

Ilina's harsh tone cuts off further discussion as she lifts the gravity spell, drawing our attention to her. Her gaze is cold as she glares at Tessa and Darak in turns.

"Lord Darak, Lady Tessa...all of you, really...I strongly suggest you not discuss my marriage in front of me as though I'm just a helpless witness to my own future. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough before. We're not voting, and you're not being asked for your opinion on my marriage to Mizuki. If you think otherwise, you're insubordinate. If you think that you'll convince Mizuki to side with you against my decision, then you're outright delusional.

"He and I are engaged, we're going to get married, and I'm not going to hide it anymore. Period. This is a courtesy announcement so that you can decide how you want to handle what comes afterward. That's it." (Ilina)

Silence descends over the room as the gravity of her words sink in, pun intended. Meanwhile, Ilina continues to scan the room with a defiant gaze, openly challenging anyone to oppose her decision.

She doesn't have to wait long.

"Sorry to be so blunt, Princess, but that's certainly not 'it'. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you're showing some backbone, and it's true this isn't a democracy, but you're naive if you think that our opinions don't matter. You stand little chance of this decision being accepted by our people at all, and zero chance without our unanimous support.

"Furthermore, need I remind you that you're currently just our Princess? My Queen, my King, are we to understand that you've given your blessing for this decision?" (Helena)

Helena's voice is almost amused as she responds, her lips twisted in a subtle smirk, as though she's lecturing a child. I expect Ilina to be annoyed, but her expression remains neutral as she turns to face her mother, Elira.

The queen winces at the question, as does Dargo. They are both glancing at Ilina and the nobles with troubled expressions, obviously both surprised by Ilina's blatant defiance and conflicted about how to address the escalating situation.

As the attention of everyone in the room turns towards Elira, expectant of her answer, she lets out a deep sigh before responding.

"We were not aware of Ilina's intention to announce this information today, nor her desire to act on Mizuki's proposal so soon. However, it's true that we were aware of their relationship and engagement, and that we support it in principle. Our hope was to, with time, find a way to facilitate their wishes in a way that won't be...problematic." (Elira)

Once again, the room falls deathly silent, until a shrill voice rings out.

"Have you lost your minds!?" (Tessa)

There's a few gasps and nervous murmurs at Tessa's outburst, and Elira's eyes narrow as she fixes her with a cold gaze.

"Watch your tone...you're still speaking to your queen and king." (Elira)

Tessa's incredulity doesn't lessen in the slightest, but she seems to recognize her breach of etiquette. After a moment, she grits her teeth and gives a slight bow to Elira before continuing.

"My apologies, my Queen, but with all due respect, I think your judgement has been clouded on this matter. What could possibly possess you to condone such a thing?" (Tessa)

As Tessa seemingly doubles down, albeit more politely, the tension becomes so thick as the two glare at one another that it could be cut with a knife. Seemingly at her wit's end, Elira's composure cracks some as well. She snorts derisively at Tessa, her voice mocking.

"Oh, my judgement is clouded, is it? Tell me, then...what should I have done when Ilina and Mizuki disclosed their resolution to get married?" (Elira)

Tessa doesn't miss a beat.

"You refuse, because it's what's best for our people, not just your daughter. You know damn well that this will only invite mayhem to our home." (Tessa)

Elira lets out a short bark of laughter.

"And if my refusal isn't accepted? What then?" (Elira)

Tessa shrugs.

"Then you insist. You are the queen and Ilina's mother, and neither noble nor royal marriages are official without your blessing. As for Mizuki..." (Tessa)

Tessa flashes me a careful glance as she thinks it over, obviously nervous about how to address the situation.

"...he is not a citizen, and has no legal authority here. If he's serious about non-interference, he'll respect our decisions. He'll just have to accept it." (Tessa)

Elira shakes her head in exasperation and fixes Tessa with a condescending gaze. Meanwhile, Ilina remains quiet, continuing to watch the discussion with a curious but mildly annoyed expression.

"Correction. Elven marriages are not official without my blessing, and Mizuki has no legal authority in this country." (Elira)

Confusion overtakes Tessa and many others, but after a moment, realization dawns on Darak's face and he goes pale. Shortly after, Tessa seems to come to a similar conclusion and fixes Elira with a horrified expression.

"You...can't seriously think..." (Tessa)

Seeing the change in the conversation, a small smirk finds its way onto Ilina's face, and she finally interjects again.

"It's not what she 'thinks'...it's the reality, Tessa. I meant what I said to you all earlier – I'm marrying Mizuki. Period. If it's not sanctioned here, then Zara has the authority to legally marry us as the Elder of the wolf-kin, and Alto has volunteered to help me arrange it according to elven customs. Your approval is a preference, not a necessity.

"As soon as my mother realized how serious Mizuki and I are, she gave us her blessing. She did it, not out of personal attachment, but because it's the best decision she can make for our people. And make no mistake – all of you are also going to give your blessing and help me convince our people to accept Mizuki. You included, Tessa." (Ilina)

All eyes in the room go wide at her ultimatum. For a while, the room hangs in silence as I study everyone's shocked and tense expressions, waiting for shit to hit the fan. To my surprise, though, Tessa lets out a bark of laughter. When she stops long enough to respond, she seems to have forgotten about me, and her voice oozes disdain.

"Oh, we'll all dance to your tune, will we? Pray tell, why would I do that?" (Tessa)

Ilina's eyes turn cold, and a small, vicious smile spreads across her face.

"Two reasons. First, because all of your other choices are terrible.

"If you refuse to bless our elven marriage, we'll get married by Zara. Even if you refuse to acknowledge it, our 'unofficial' marriage will be public knowledge in the kingdom. I will have Mizuki accompany me most places, I will be clearly affectionate with him in public, and I will insist to anyone that asks that we are married.

"If that causes me to fall out of favor with our people, then so be it. If you want to take action against me because of it, then that's fine, too. But what can you do, exactly? You can treat me like Alara – strip me of my royal status – but then you'd have no heir. You could reinstate Alara, I guess. I'll happily swap places with her and take over Eden in her stead, but you'd still have a noble and former heir married to Mizuki.

"You could make me into a commoner instead, or even banish me from the kingdom entirely, but that would only cause even more mayhem. In addition, if you do that, who will run Eden? Surely you don't think that any of you can do it? Almost all of the things that make Eden a viable city were provided by Mizuki, and I'm sure he'd take them away the minute that they're no longer under the control of an elf he trusts sufficiently. As you've recently learned, that's only me, Alara, and Alto.

"So, Eden would effectively collapse. You'd also alienate Lady Nedonera and Mizuki as allies, in case you've forgotten that I'm both the only reason that either of them is here in the first place, and the one among our ranks who they trust the most. Without me, I'm sure that all the common elves would soon learn that their nobles and royal family are to blame for all these disastrous losses for our kingdom. I can only imagine how much mayhem would ensue then.

"But who knows...maybe I'm wrong. Does anyone here see things going better?" (Ilina)

Ilina finishes her rant with that flippant question, then sweeps her gaze over those in the now deathly silent room. Even Elira and Dargo are speechless. On some level, I think they always knew how serious Ilina was – that everything she said was a possibility. But assuming and seeing her resolve are two different things. I'm sure the experience is just as shocking for them.

I'm in the same boat. I've never heard Ilina speak so venomously to other elves, and I can't imagine that she enjoys it, despite how cold she may seem right now. I feel a wave of guilt wash over me as I try and work through my feelings. Is this the right way to handle this? Is Ilina going to regret it later? Will she blame me?

Burying my worries, I glance at Tessa, whose face seems to be cycling between bewilderment and rage. Her fists are clenched so hard that they're turning white. After a moment's pause, she responds in a low voice through gritted teeth, her words almost a whisper.

"You'd really do all that? Threaten your own people...just for him?" (Tessa)

Ilina rolls her eyes and scoffs, seemingly unfazed by the accusation.

"Tch...don't try and twist this on me. What you're calling threats are nothing more than my predictions about the consequences of your own potential actions. If the possibilities you heard scare you, look in the mirror for someone to blame. The only thing I've threatened to 'do' is marry Mizuki, and you're damn right that I'll really do that." (Ilina)

Complete disbelief overtakes Tessa's face for a moment, before it dissolves into an unnervingly calm expression. Her eyes and voice suddenly become cold.

"If you're so flippant about those outcomes, then you have confessed a willingness to abandon our people for an outsider...you're a traitor. If you want to know what I think we should do, I suggest that we arrest and detain you within the palace until you see reason. Your mother is young, so there's no rush for your succession or marriage. At worst, we'll release you in a few decades...this would all be a moot point by then." (Tessa)

My eyes go wide at her words. The leap in logic, her sudden loss of civility, calling Ilina a traitor, the suggestion to imprison Ilina until I die of old age...it's ridiculous at every level. I'm angered by the hatefulness of it, indignant about her implication that Ilina doesn't care for her people, and shocked by the pure stupidity of her voicing all of these things in front of me. Especially now that she knows the truth about me.

The more I absorb Tessa's words, the more infuriated I become, until I can almost hear my blood pounding in my ears. If I were to look at Ilina, I'd notice that she's relatively unfazed by the declaration, but I'm not calm enough to register that.

Apparently, I'm not alone.

"Do you have brain damage, cousin? Or perhaps I didn't hear you right, because it sounded like you just suggested imprisoning your Princess and defamed her as a traitor. Since I didn't forbid her marriage, there's nothing technically illegal about what she discussed, and she has yet to actually marry Mizuki. So, the only traitor here would be you, for your mutinous proposal." (Elira)

Elira's voice has the warmth and reach of a blizzard as she stares down Tessa, leaning over the table. Small sparks of electricity can be faintly seen dancing between her fingers as her muscles seem to tense in anticipation of a conflict.

Perhaps noticing the rising tension, or just finally registering Tessa's lunacy, Darak's face goes pale as he quietly speaks.

"Princess Ilina might have been heavy-handed, but...Tessa...you've gone too far..." (Darak)

Helena wears a grave expression, her voice barely a whisper.

"He's right, Tessa..." (Helena)

Meanwhile, Cara, Alara, Dargo, and several others are focused on me with terrified expressions, not that I notice. I'm too busy trying to restrain myself from throttling Tessa, but thankfully nobody has actually made a move towards Ilina.

Tessa snorts as she glances at Elira, Darak, and Helena.

"Nonsense, she clearly ha-" (Tessa)

"Shut up, it doesn't matter." (Mizuki)

I cut her off, my voice practically a snarl, and everyone in the room turns to me with an incredulous expression. Tessa's face is initially twisted in anger, but when she sees that I'm staring at her with unrestrained malice, her expression falters as she seems to recall what she's learned about me. Her face pales slightly as she calms herself, and her eyes become slightly fearful, but she responds with a firm voice nonetheless.

"I beg your pardon?" (Tessa)

My demeanor only grows colder as my eyes narrow at her.

"I told you to shut up with your threats, because they don't matter. Let me clarify something for you, since you had the audacity – in my presence, no less – to threaten my fiancé over our engagement. While I take my promise of minimal interference with your kingdom quite seriously, don't think for a second that I care about that more than Ilina herself.

"I'll let you strip her of her titles, fine her as much money as you want, and even banish her from the country. Hell, if you want to banish me from the country, I'll willingly leave and stay away. If it was what Ilina asked of me, I'd even leave the country while she remains here, and never see her again.

"However, under no circumstances will I allow anyone to harm a single hair on her head, or to keep her from me against her will. I don't care if it's a commoner, a noble, or a king, a person, a country, or this whole planet – you lack the power to circumvent me.

"Never forget that I'm only harmless to the people I care about. So, don't threaten someone I love for shitty reasons, because then we won't be allies. Are we clear?" (Mizuki)

A cold, stifling quiet blankets the room following my very clear threat, but I don't care. I just maintain my glare at Tessa, who has gone completely pale. As she seems to whither under my gaze, she finally manages to let out a soft, raspy response, as though her throat has been parched by fear.

"Y-yes..." (Tessa)

I let out a deep sigh of relief, as my anger slowly fades away.

"Good." (Mizuki)

I finally take a calmer look around the room, and notice that everyone is a bit shaken from my outburst. Several nobles and their escorts are watching me nervously, though they avoid eye contact when I look their way. Elira is wearing a conflicted expression, probably due to my threatening an elven noble, while Dargo is staring straight at me with a face that's almost...appreciative.

When my eyes settle on Ilina, I'm expecting her to look surprised or disappointed...or both. Instead, however, her face is completely unreadable. As if sensing my concerns, as our gazes meet she gives me the slightest nod, which I interpret as her reassurance that she's not upset. Though, I suppose that could just be wishful thinking.

After a while, as the awkward silence begins to drag in the room, Cara clears her throat pointedly, clearly hoping to change the subject.

"Ehem...uhm, well then. Princess, I believe you promised two reasons why we would support your marriage to Mizuki, but you only mentioned one. What was the second?" (Cara)

Ilina glances at Cara and nods.

"Yes...you're right." (Ilina)

Seeing that everyone in the room is still tense, Ilina pauses as she sweeps her eyes around, waiting for the others' attention. After a few moments, most gazes are directed at her again, and she nods before continuing.

"The second reason should be obvious, if you set your prejudice aside. Mizuki's presence and influence is beneficial to our people, and even if he has no interest in it, I'm sure that he'd make a good king. Just look at how much has changed for the better in the short time since his arrival.

"Trains, flourishing cities developing in weeks, devices called MMCs that allow instantaneous communication anywhere in the country, a potential source of high-quality enchanted items, and a rich influx of entertainment and recreational opportunities. And that's saying nothing of his critical role in solving the demon crisis, his rescue of our people from human slavery, his unique relationship with both an Elder Dragon and the Greater Spirits of the Delmura Forest, and his ongoing willingness to protect us.

"His presence has offered all that, and he's not even a citizen of our country. In fact, until recently our people universally met him with scorn, and many of you still do. Despite that hostility, and the power he wields, he's been nothing but friendly to the elves in return. So, just imagine how much good he could do here if we actually accepted him and treated him like he belonged. If we gave him a reason to trust us." (Ilina)

Ilina looks between the faces present, seemingly gauging their reactions to her appeal. She's met with mostly stunned expressions and silence, and for good reason. She just revealed a number of things that weren't common knowledge. Namely, the MMCs and my new 'relationship' with the Greater Spirits. If I had to guess, it's also the first confirmation for many here that I'm the source of all the new entertainment in Eden.

As these revelations presumably sink in, several people start voicing their questions as the gazes in the room shift back and forth between Ilina and me.

"Wait, Mizuki, you didn't tell me that you have a familiar relationship with the Greater Spirits!?" (Cara)

"Princess, what's an M-M-C? Surely I must have misheard you saying they can be used for instantaneous communication from anywhere?" (Helena)

"I see...so that's where all those splendid games came from. Where did you get the idea for chess, Mizuki?" (Darak)

I raise my eyebrows a bit at Darak's surprisingly frivolous question, but I otherwise ignore him. I just look to Ilina expectantly. I wasn't expecting her to reveal all that, especially since she told me to avoid mentioning the MMCs last night. Was it just so she could reveal it now? If so, why?

As those who are staring at me realize that my attention in fully fixed on Ilina, they also turn to face her as more, similar questions begin to echo in the room. Eventually, Ilina raises her hand and the room falls silent again.

"For those of you asking questions about the Greater Spirits and the so-called MMCs – yes, everything I just told you is true. There are MMCs currently installed in the royal palace, Alara's home, and Cara's home. If you want more details about either topic, you're out of luck. The Greater Spirits are distrustful of anyone other than the Elder Dragons and Mizuki, and I doubt that he's willing to ask them to meet you for the same reason he didn't tell most of you about the MMCs.

"You don't have his trust, and you have nobody to blame for that but yourselves. I only revealed this information so that you could have a glimpse of how much you miss out on by continuing to treat him like your enemy. He's been generous up to a point, but there's limits to how much he can greet hostility with trust." (Ilina)

After a moment of thoughtful quiet under Ilina's stern gaze, I see several faces in the room turn towards me expectantly, as though awaiting my confirmation. Several people also glance at an uncomfortable Cara, presumably annoyed that she already has one of the MMCs they just learned about.

In response to their stares, I just sigh and shrug.

"Yeah, nothing Ilina has said is wrong. I gave MMCs to the people I thought I could trust, and the rest of you don't qualify. I'm sure that, in my position, you'd feel the same way. As for the spirits, they're entitled to their privacy and making their own decisions, just like you. I'm not going to advocate for you or pressure them to change their ways when their not bothering anyone. Especially for people whose intentions I don't trust." (Mizuki)

I see a number of crestfallen faces at my words, and a few guilty ones as well, as a contemplative silence envelops us. Eventually, it's broken by a fit of hysterical laughter, which I'm not too surprised to notice is coming from Helena.

She's leaning back in her chair, holding her sides, as she continues to giggle without reservation for several moments. When all eyes are on her, most of them bewildered, she finally seems to notice the attention that she's drawing to herself and calms down. Then, she waves at everyone dismissively before turning to Ilina with an amused smile.

Her voice is tainted with sarcasm and self-reproach as she responds.

"So, that's how it is, Princess? I admit, I'm impressed. All this time, everyone's been telling you that you need to take after your mother a bit more – be more shrewd and commanding. Boy...I bet they're regretting that now.

"Just to make sure I've got everything right, you advise us to fall in line and help make your royal marriage to Mizuki a reality. Because our only other option is to cast you aside, thus alienating an Elder Dragon, whatever god-like existence Mizuki is, and our own people who will lose access to everything that the former two have provided.

"On the other hand, if we heed your sage advice, bend the proverbial knee, and help substantiate Mizuki's place by your side, then we'll hopefully earn his trust and untold prosperity for the elves. Am I understanding the terms of your extortion correctly?" (Helena)

Ilina purses her lips disapprovingly.

"I'd hardly call it extortion, since the consequences aren't being directly brought about by me, but you're correct in your understanding of what I think the consequences of your decisions would be. I want what's best for our people, and I hardly think that I can be blamed if I can't marry the man I love without the kingdom tearing itself apart due to racism." (Ilina)

Helena shrugs nonchalantly.

"Describe it with whatever flowery language you want...it doesn't change the consequences or how you're exploiting them to your advantage. Truly, you've got our ears in a vice grip. Also, don't misunderstand me. I'm not admonishing or condemning you, it's exactly the kind of ruthless, calculating behavior you've been sorely lacking.

"So long as you remember the difference between a queen and a dictator going forward, I'm not going to fight you further on this issue. You've made a compelling argument. As for the rest of these fools..." (Helena)

While I'm wondering if her comment about their ears is some kind of elven thing, Helena pauses and glances around the table, noting the still fainted Jorah, then settles her gaze on Cara and Alara across the table from her. She smirks at them.

"I'm guessing Princess Ilina already has your support, in addition to the royals' and now mine?" (Helena)

Cara and Alara glance at each other briefly before nodding at Helena with a smirk.

"Naturally." (Alara)

Of course." (Cara)

Helena snorts and turns her gaze towards Darak.

"And what about you, old man?" (Helena)

Darak sighs deeply and rubs his eyes as he seems to think over the question intensely. When he finally pulls his hands away from his face, his expression is somber, and he seems to have aged immensely. He looks...tired.

He directs a probing gaze at Ilina.

"Princess, are you certain that this is the path you want to take? Even if you have my support – all of our support – there's no guarantee that Mizuki will be accepted by our people. This would be an unprecedented change for them, amidst a time when humans aren't just banned from our country, but are actively trying to invade our lands. Are you prepared to face the associated challenges and consequences?" (Darak)

Ilina meets Darak's piercing gaze with a small smile and a nod.

"I am. I'm confident that, if we all work together, I can convince our people to accept Mizuki's place by my side. Indeed, I have not sat idly until today. Mizuki and I have been roaming Avalon together for quite some time now, and he has also had a public presence in Eden and Wellick. Despite our people's wariness of humans, most of the elves in those cities are now friendly towards him.

"I recognize that's not the same as accepting him as my husband, but it's not that much of a leap either. With time, our careful intervention, and friendly exposure to Mizuki, I think there's a path forward. Towards a future where our people show Mizuki the same appreciation they show me." (Ilina)

I can't help but widen my eyes in surprise at Ilina's heartfelt words. As she stares back at Darak, her eyes steeled in resolve and her lips curled into a warm smile, I can't see any trace of the uncertainty she displayed last night during our heart-to-heart. It's clear she means what she says, that she's confident in making our wish to be married and accepted in the Elven Kingdom a reality.

The sight floods me with relief, as though a physical weight has been lifted from my shoulders, and I unconsciously let out a deep breath that I wasn't aware I've been holding.

Meanwhile, Darak stares back at Ilina's confident visage for a few seconds before nodding, and a small, reserved smile finds its way onto his face.

"Very well, Princess. Then you have my support, too. I sincerely hope your confidence isn't misplaced...for all our sakes." (Darak)

Ilina just nods politely, while Helena chuckles at Darak and slowly looks over at Tessa, whose hostility has been largely replaced by apprehension.

"So, Tessa...out of those among us that are still conscious, that only leaves you. What's it going to be?" (Helena)

Tessa's face immediately tenses, her eyes telling of internal conflict as she glances between me, Ilina, and the others for several moments. Eventually, she looks back at Helena and frowns, then ignores her and turns towards me.

"My answer is no. I don't share their optimism, Mizuki. I recognize that we may not be in a position to prevent your marriage, or to entirely avoid consequences from our refused support, but I don't think that the benefits of supporting you as the husband of our future queen outweigh the risks.

"There will be public resentment and perhaps worse, and you've already made clear your stance on trusting people with your marvelous enchanted items like the trains and these MMCs. I'm not so naivé to think that you'll start trusting those like me, Jorah, or even Helena just because Princess Ilina forced us to support you.

"I'm sure that refusing you will have consequences as well, like the Princess said, but we can manage those. If we are to take you at your word, then I think it's best to quietly exile you and Princess Ilina as you mentioned. I imagine that even then, if the Empire tries to invade, you'll still protect us from them out of loyalty to Lady Alto and Princess Ilina.

"It's true that we may lose the trains and other treasures of Eden, but the city itself is now developed enough to function semi-independently. If we prioritize building a road between Avalon and Eden to replace the train, it shouldn't be long before its value and people are mostly restored.

"As for the issue of succession and Princess Ilina's absence, it's nothing that can't wait until you die of old age, at which point we'd happily welcome the Princess back and life will carry on as before. After all, what are a few decades to us elves? In the meantime, we could simply explain her absence as a diplomatic mission with the demons, dwarves, and/or denizens of the forest, or as part of her education to ascend to the throne." (Tessa)

I have to stop my jaw from hanging open as Tessa looks at me with a calm but resolute expression. I'm surprised by her painfully cold and accurate assessment, but what's really shocking is how much trust she seems to have in my goodwill.

Enough that she's willing to say something so outrageous and exploitative to my face, but simultaneously bank on the fact that I'll take it lying down, and that I'd still face an army for them after Ilina's and my exile. And...she's right.

But, when did she start trusting me that much? Why? And if she's really that confident in my character and my willingness to protect them, then why is she so stubbornly fighting against everyone else here to keep me at arm's length from the elves?

As I'm trying to solve the mystery of Tessa's motivations, I notice that a stunned silence has overtaken the room. Glancing around, I see that many people, Helena and Darak especially, are now wearing conflicted expressions. Catching my eye, Helena decides to speak up.

"Mizuki, can I take your silence to mean that what Tessa said is true? Specifically, that you wouldn't be changing your stance on the trains and other items with the rest of us, that you'd leave freely with Princess Ilina if we asked, and that you'd still prevent the Empire from invading despite that?" (Helena)

Darak raises his eyebrows curiously.

"I'd also like to know the answer to that, Mizuki." (Darak)

I clench my jaw, uncertainty invading every one of my thoughts as I contemplate what to do. No matter how I look at it, while some of Tessa's assumptions, like my lifespan, are wrong, those three points are not.

I glance at Ilina, wondering how she's reacting to Tessa's cold assessment. To my surprise, she looks completely unperturbed, and she's just watching me expectantly. My eyes widen in surprise.

Does that mean she expected this? Am I just supposed to be honest?

After another moment of quiet contemplation, I sigh deeply and nod at Darak before turning my gaze to Helena.

"Yeah. Trust like that isn't earned overnight, or from decisions you make under duress. At the same time, I'm not the kind of person that would go back on my promise to leave peacefully or protect you from the Empire. Tessa is right about that, too." (Mizuki)

Darak sighs regretfully.

"I see. Well, I confess...as heartless as it sounds, that changes things a bit. I'm sorry." (Darak)

"I agree, Mizuki. No hard feelings, kid." (Helena)

Before I can respond, I hear silvery laughter from Ilina, who is watching the exchange with an amused smile. Naturally, her reaction draws the confused gazes of everyone in the room.

"Well, I wouldn't be so quick to abandon ship you two." (Ilina)

Helena narrows her eyes at Ilina, her expression wary.

"And why is that?" (Helena)

Darak and Tessa look at Ilina in anticipation, as do Elira and Dargo, who have been following the conversation with concerned expressions. So far they've been surprisingly quiet, but they seem to be constantly torn between their desire to trust Ilina to handle the situation for them, and an urge to intervene when Ilina or the nobles like Tessa have been especially forceful.

Seeing everyone's expectant gazes, Ilina just smirks.

"For one, because Tessa is wrong about several things, including that you won't benefit from supporting Mizuki and me. If I remain the heir to our kingdom, and you support our public marriage, then he will build a train for each and every one of your territories, and he'll also install an MMC in every one of your homes." (Ilina)

Everyone's eyes go wide in confusion, including Ilina's parents'. As for me, I'm doubly confused.

She thinks I'm going to do what now?

I see several people including Tessa glance at me inquisitively. Then, as if inferring my thoughts from my expression, she turns back to face Ilina with a frown.

"Princess, Mizuki just plainly said the exact opposite, and his face also clearly suggests that he had no intention of doing what you describe." (Tessa)

Ilina shakes her head, and begins walking around the table towards Tessa with a confident smile.

"No, he just plainly told you that he's not going to magically trust you all of a sudden, which is still true. As for his face, that's because he hasn't previously agreed to doing what I just said. However, he will. It's true that he turned all of you down, and he even turned down my mother's and father's request for such a thing. But he'll do it if I'm the one asking." (Ilina)

While I continue to gape like a goldfish at Ilina's sudden assertion as my thoughts spin, Tessa just stares back at her with a skeptical expression. Before she can respond, though, Helena snorts in amusement.

"Oh, confident you've got your boyfriend good and saddled, are you? Fufufu...well if that's true, why are there no trains anywhere else yet? Why didn't you step in when he turned down whatever these prior requests from our King and Queen were?" (Helena)

Ilina purses her lips disapprovingly.

"We have mutual trust...he's not my horse. As for why I haven't asked him for this before, it's because I don't just see him as an exploitable resource. I love him, and I value the trust he's put in me since before we were even romantically involved. More importantly, if he grants such a request, only my position as Princess and then Queen will allow me to ensure that I'm worthy of the trust he puts in me.

"Since I always worried that I might lose that position once our relationship became public knowledge, I wasn't willing to ask him for such a favor before we addressed the situation. Obviously, if you all support our public marriage, that problem goes away." (Ilina)

Darak raises his eyebrows at her comment, and turns towards me with an inquisitive expression.

"Mizuki, would you really do what Ilina says if she's the one asking?" (Darak)

As his question snaps me out of my stupor, I notice that everyone is watching me expectantly, waiting for my answer, and I suddenly feel a wave of apprehension.

I turn my attention to Ilina, who is now walking past Tessa at the side of the table, making her way to me. Her long, silvery hair is flashing in the room's lighting as it sways behind her, and her grey eyes hold nothing but warmth as she smiles at me reassuringly.

As I take in the sight of her, I feel immense gratitude towards her wash over me. I don't want to disappoint her, and I definitely trust her. I really do, but...her request isn't about how much I trust her.

If I do as she asks, build trains and MMCs for all the nobles, and they abuse them, I'll be forced to slaughter who knows how many elves. Even if she played a role in it, and even though she knows about Azazel's rules, I can't imagine our relationship surviving something like that. I don't know why she'd make such a request knowing what she does, but...I can't risk granting it.

After several moments of my inner turmoil, Ilina arrives in front of me with her demeanor unchanged. As I meet her gaze, I can feel my own guilt and remorse shining through in my eyes, my voice heavily apologetic.

"Ilina...I c-" (Mizuki)

She cuts me off by grabbing my hand and shaking her head. I can feel her hand burning with heat as she laces her fingers through mine, her grey eyes never breaking their hold on my own.

"Before you answer, let me say something." (Ilina)

My words die in my throat, and I stare at her with a conflicted expression for several seconds. Seeing my hesitation, she smiles and continues.

"Mizuki, you knew when you confessed to me and asked me to marry you that I care for my people. You also knew the weight of my responsibility, that I'll one day take my mother's place as queen, and that my husband will share some of that responsibility. So, has anything changed...do you still love me? Do you still want to marry me?" (Ilina)

My face contorts in shock, my voice becoming incredulous.

"Of course! It's ju-" (Mizuki)

Ilina cuts me off with a quick hand squeeze and a smile.

"Great, I feel the same way. And if I were Queen and we were married with my people's blessing, even if you don't want it, would you be my people's King if I asked? Would you consider me your Queen, too, and help me shoulder my responsibilities?" (Ilina)

I open my mouth to respond. I want to tell her that she knows I'd do all of that in a heartbeat. But that shouldering her responsibility and accepting her as my Queen doesn't mean blindly following her orders like a dog. That her request is still far from being so simple. Unfortunately, I get the distinct impression that she'd just cut me off again before I elaborate.

So, I just nod at her in response. She smiles again, and she begins to rub my hand with her thumb affectionately.

"Thank you...that's also what I want, Mizuki. And that's exactly why I have this favor to ask of you. Up until now, it's true that you've been a friend to the elves, but you've never taken responsibility for our growth and well-being. You've never truly sought to make our home your own, or to treat my people as another elf would.

"I understand that my people have been far from inviting, and that you've never received the opportunity to truly be one of us. But if you want to make this work, like I do, then this is our best chance. So, even though it's not fair or reasonable, even though it's my people who are the problem, I'm still asking you to be the bigger person and take the first step towards making that wish a reality.

"I'm asking you to grant me this favor. I know that you don't trust any of them, but I'm asking you to trust me. To trust that I share your fears and your burdens, and that I'm competent enough to ensure you won't regret granting my favor. So, I'll ask you again, do you trust me?" (Ilina)

Ilina meets my gaze calmly, patiently, as her question hangs in the air. Every muscle in my body is tensed, my thoughts in disarray as I consider her words.

She's not wrong...I've never been interested in truly integrating myself into their country, and I'm sure it shows. It's the reason I outright rejected Darak's suggestion for citizenship all that time ago.

I've wanted to help them, and to be accepted, but not to truly be one of them. Not to treat them like they treat each other, and have that consideration reciprocated. Instead, I've always avoided any kind of preferential treatment for their race. In retrospect, while that's totally reasonable, and they likely have other reasons for not trusting me, it also probably didn't help my situation.

All of that aside, I can tell from the way she's acting that this must have been what she had in mind from the beginning. The reason why last night she asked me so adamantly if I trust her unconditionally. Whatever her plan is, me agreeing to this request is critical.

Still, even knowing that, I can't shake the foreboding that comes with granting her request. The stakes are too high if the elves abuse my gifts, and I fail to see how Ilina can fully control all the nobles' actions with the trains.

If she knows I don't trust them, and she knows the stakes, why would she ask me to do this? Does she have some solution I don't know about? Why wouldn't she share it with me beforehand if she did?

The more I think about it, the more I can only see her favor ending poorly, and the more confused I am by her request. Ultimately, I'm left with a decision as simple as it is agonizing. I can truly, blindly trust Ilina, potentially having to commit atrocities later, or I can knowingly derail her plans and definitely cause major but less severe problems for her and her country. Either runs the risk of ruining our relationship.

I glance back up at her, my inner thoughts plainly written on my face. Meeting her gaze, I can see a touch of fear and hurt slowly creeping into her expression as the silence between us lingers, and it almost breaks me. Because I know that she's done nothing to make me doubt her, but she's also asking for a level of blind trust that I'm not sure I'm capable of.

Resolving myself for the consequences, I let out a deep sigh and give her a sad smile.

"I'm sorry, Ilina. You deserve more from me...I hope you can forgive me for thinking about it so long. If you really believe that this is for the best, then I'll grant your favor. You have my complete trust." (Mizuki)

I see relief wash over Ilina like a wave, and for a brief moment there's a hint of tears forming in the corners of her eyes and it looks like she wants to say something. However, the moment passes just as suddenly, and I see her steel herself with resolve once again. She smiles at me with a calm warmth and gives my hand one final squeeze as her voice comes out in a whisper.

"Thank you, Mizuki..." (Ilina)

She immediately lets go of my hand and turns around to face the others in the room, her face now a mask of confidence. She's met with a number of flabbergasted expressions, most notably Elira's.

"There you have it. You most certainly have plenty to gain from publicly supporting our marriage. Specifically, a train and an MMC for each of you. Now, Mizuki has made a huge commitment to our people, despite his reservations about preferential treatment between races.

"Quite frankly, our people have done absolutely nothing to deserve it, but he did it anyway. So, the real question is, how much does that mean to all of you?" (Ilina)

She sweeps her gaze across the still stunned nobles, lingering on Helena and Darak the most, but Tessa's voice is the first one heard in response.

"All this proves to me is that Mizuki's feelings for you are far more serious than I originally guessed, and that he's less rigid than I expected. While that's reassuring, it doesn't change the more fundamental issues. Yes, we stand more to gain short-term than I expected, but that's all. If we were discussing a subtle, informal romance, you'd have a better case.

"However, you're insisting on a public marriage. Mizuki will die of old age long before you become Queen. When he does, there's no guarantee he'll leave those gifts behind. Even if he did, he says we have no way to replicate them when they break. With time, these benefits would quickly be lost, but the ramifications of our future Queen marrying a non-elf would remain." (Tessa)

To my surprise, Tessa's voice is soft, almost sympathetic, and I can't see any animosity towards me in her gaze. Nonetheless, Ilina raises her eyebrows, her voice taking on a challenging tone.

"So, this is about him not being an elf? I find that hard to believe. If I were proposing to marry an Elder Dragon, would you be as resistant?" (Ilina)

Tessa's gaze doesn't waver. She shakes her head calmly.

"No, but that's different. An Elder Dragon wouldn't die of old age, and our people have no negative history with their race. Even then, I'd still be somewhat resistant. Our Queen needs an heir, an elven heir with your lifespan, and I doubt an Elder Dragon husband would be able to provide you one. Of course, if you were to also take an elven lover for that purpose, that issue would be solved, but I digress." (Tessa)

Ilina's lips twist into a humorless smirk.

"Then, what if you knew that Mizuki will live at least as long as I will? What if you could also be sure that he could sire an elven heir like you described?" (Ilina)

Tessa sighs heavily, her expression becoming weary, giving the distinct impression that she thinks Ilina has now devolved into a childish game of hypotheticals. Meanwhile, I see Elira, Dargo, and Cara, all of whom aren't privy to Ilina's plan but know those things to be true, listen for Tessa's response expectantly.

"Even if all of that were possible, it wouldn't change my opinion. It solves many issues, and I confess that it makes exiling you far more problematic since it would last the rest of your life, but it also creates new problems. For one, even if it was only in name, Mizuki would live long enough that he'd become King.

"At this point, I have no issue admitting that I...misjudged...Mizuki. Learning about how tolerant he's been despite the power he wields, I trust that he doesn't need to be our enemy. If circumstances were different, I'd want to make amends for how I've behaved. Truthfully, after seeing him make decisions today, I'll even go so far to agree that he has all the makings of a fine king and husband. But...he's still human.

"If he manages to become King without our people rioting, if anything like an Empire invasion happens under your rule that he can be blamed for, he will be blamed for it. That may very well tear the country apart. Even if the people love him wholeheartedly, and your reign goes down in history as our race's golden age, that may be just as bad.

"How long do you think, with Mizuki as their only firsthand example of humanity, we could reasonably maintain our anti-human policies? What do you think would happen with the Empire or another human country if they weren't so stringently banned? What are the repercussions of that when Mizuki isn't around to protect us anymore, and the fear of humans is a distant memory to our people?

"I'm sorry, but I still refuse to support your marriage, and I'm honestly tired of hypotheticals. We have a real threat at our door to concern ourselves with." (Tessa)

I stare at Tessa in surprise, lost for words just like everyone else. I can't speak for the others' reasons, but...I can't believe that Tessa just gave me such a glowing review. Everything from her tone to her words suggests that whatever personal vendetta she had against me before has been wiped clean by today's events. If I didn't know any better, she sounds downright pained by the thought of exiling Ilina and me.

The unexpected calm after Tessa's speech is suddenly shattered by Helena's flippant tone.

"Well, Tessa may not be sold, but I am. I don't care that he'll kick it in under a century, or that we can't replicate his enchanted items after that. They're all made out of sturdy metals, and it's only the magical components that we can't replace. If we take very good care of them, they'll last more than long enough to make it worth it. If Lady Nedonera sticks it out for her sister-wife after that, and/or learns how to replicate the trains with her own divine power, then that's a bonus." (Helena)

I have to suppress a chuckle over her bluntness, but thankfully several voices follow hers, covering my amusement.

"I concur...I'll support the marriage." (Darak)

"Naturally, I never withdrew mine." (Alara)

"The same goes for me." (Cara)

I glance at Ilina, and I see a wide, victorious grin spread across her face. Meanwhile, Elira and Dargo, who have done their best to abstain from interrupting, wear more reserved expressions as they stare at Tessa expectantly. Catching their gaze on her, she merely shakes her head.

"Their support doesn't change my mind." (Tessa)

The King's and Queen's faces grow solemn, and Dargo lets out a deep sigh, his eyes full of pain and pleading as he looks up at the still smiling Ilina.

"Ilina...dear..." (Dargo)
